I'm not sure that it had to do with being thought not smart enough, as much as that we ourselves were of limited legal standing and the responsibility of our fathers and husbands. If the the filer was a "minor over the age of 14" then, considering 14 year olds were regularly employed, he wasn't looking for someone to take care of him physically as much as legally. Perhaps a male guardian was needed to sign apprenticeship papers, for example, or it was the guardian himself to whom the child was "apprenticing".
