    1. [PALUZERN] Mary Susannah, wife of Peter Gregory & Isaac Benscoter

    3. I am trying to reconcile conflicting information on Mary Susannah, wife of Peter Gregory and Isaac Benscoter. According to the Benscoter genealogy, p. 505, Isaac Benscoter married, as his first wife, "Mary Susannah Gregory, nee Gearhart, who d. in 1806;..." She is given four children by Isaac Benscoter: 1. Susannah Benscoter, b. 7 June 1799; 2. Abram Benscoter, b. 1802; d. 1822; 3. Jacob Benscoter, b. 7 July 1804; and 4. Abigail Benscoter, m. Andrew Hontz; no issue; lived in Luzerne County. The Belles book, p. 35, gives the following account: Isaac Benscoter married first, Mary Susannah Fink, d. 1806, who was married first to a Gearhart by whom she had: 1. Mary Gearhart, m. Shadrach Austin; 2. Susan Gearhart, no further record; and second to George C. Gregory and had 3. George Gregory; 4. Peter Gregory; 5. Richard Gregory. This account is erroneous in that Mary Susannah was married to Peter Gregory, not George; Mary, wife of Shadrach Austin was a Gregory; and Susan Gearhart is probably confused with Mary Susannah's daughter Susannah Benscoter. An account of Mary Susannah, which I accessed on Rootsweb.com, calls her a daughter of George Gearhart, b. 1740 in Germany, and his wife Ann Van Horn. This account gives this couple 11 children ending with Mary Susannah, b. 27 April 1762. The preceding children were born two years apart starting with a daughter Ann, born in 1742!! What a precocious father she had!! Needless to say this account is suspect. Finally, in Bradsby's History of Luzerne County, one finds on p. 657 the following: "The first settlement outside of what is now Shickshinny borough was made in the northwest of River mountain, in 1790, by Peter Gregory and George Fink. These men had married each other's sisters, and had come from the valley of the Delaware." So, who was Mary Susannah? Was she George Fink's sister or was she a Gearhart? David
