I had the opportunity to speak last night, at the regular monthly meeting of the Northeast Pennsylvania Genealogical Society. I would like to convey my thanks to all who participated. Two great feats were announced at last nights meeting. (1) The Society has recently completed the massive task of microfilming all the burial records of St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Hanover Township. The information has also been compiled into a four volume set of books, containing information on over 39,000 burials. These books will be available for public sale. All money raised will fund additional microfilm projects, etc. I will post once I obtain details. (2) Also, the Society has been searching for a permanent home for its growing collection of historical & genealogical resources. The Society is proud to announce that a building has been donated, and extensive renovations will begin soon. I will keep eveyone posted. An interesting note: 3/4 of all of the Society's members do not live locally. That is why Internet sites such as this are so important. A member of the audience at last evening's presentation brought up the subject of the deplorable conditions in which records at the Luzerne County Register of Wills Office are stored. A discussion ensued, and those who spoke out agreed that something needs to be done. Unfortunately, they also feel that like in the past, the controversy will be swept under the rug. Dear list members who are also LOCAL members of the NEPA Gen. Soc, Jim has done the NON-LOCAL members of the society a BIG favor by letting us know what goes on at monthly meetings we are not able to attend. He mentions a large percentage of the members were NOT LOCAL. Can members of this list who are local members suggest that the activities and notices of general interest be posted here (if that is OK with Tammy) or at the very least on the society web page? I have been waiting impatiently for news of the St. Mary's books and await notice from the Society. Jackie in VA
HI Jackie I have no Problem with people posting the url or contact person for the book on the list. The only thing that is not allowed is mentioning prices, etc. That would be advertising and that is not only against my guidelines but against rootsweb's guidelines as well. I have tried to encourage local members suggest the activities and notices of general interest be posted here and discussed openly. Just ask them not to drag it on forever and not to advertise items for Sale but to add a link to the message directing people to find the information. I understand completely what Doug is speaking of because I use to be the president of the NEPA genealogical Society & i tried faithly to find a place to house their holdings. Including the Osterhout Library and the Historical Society along with the Plymouth Historical Society. All to no avail or they wanted full control of the holdings. I also understand that the Genealogical Research Society of NEPA (based in Lackawanna County) has many holdings and does have some information on Luzerne County, including the Nanticoke City Cemetery, Joe please correct this if I am wrong. Again if Joe's group can assist in mentioning meetings, upcoming events, or General interests.
