    2. Marvelous, Marvelous! This is my great grandmother, remarrying, after the drowning of my great- grandfather, to Antonio Cattaneo. Can someone tell me what BANNS is? My great-grandmother was attending, I am sure, St. Vincent dePaul. But Antonio was clearly Italian, and I am wondering if he would not have been attending a different church? Which would be the most likely for Italians in Plymouth, assuming he did go to a different church. Anyone connect to this name? Wilkes-Barre Evening Leader, Mon, Apr 7, 1890 BRIEFS: From Plymouth: The banns of marriage were announced at Easter mass for JOHN BOYLE and Miss MARY CARR, and for ANTONIO CATTANEO and Mrs ELLEN SUMMERS Thanks, yet again, Ed. You have really been a tremendous source of good tidings to this list. Vince

    3. Vince, Here is a site that might explain marriage banns a bit better than I can. Banns as I understand it, were brought forth to show any impediment that might prevent a marriage, such as a person already being married at the time of marrying another, etc. Some were made to put forth money (actually did not put up money but...) if it were found that there was indeed a legal means to prevent the marriage, the money would then have to be paid by the person fronting the money. Usually this was the person who applied for the marriage license. http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/02255a.htm Hope this might help you and someone else on the list.
