However, I could not find any reference to a "Free Presbyterian Church". One of my family was Thomas AITKEN, Blacksmith, born 1844, Walston, Lanarkshire, Scotland who married Margaret BERTRAM, born 1846, Dolphinton, Lanarkshire, Scotland and settled in West Pittston, PA. and may have moved to Dickson City after 1900. In searching the records of the First United Presbyterian Church (formerly First Presbyterian Church) West Pittston, I discovered the name of Thomas Aitken in the Register of Elders. He was installed on 7 February 1892. Further in the church records are the names of Thomas Aitken and Mrs. Margaret Aitken (wife of Thomas) in the Register of Communicants. Both have 14 April 1889 as their "Date of Admission", both were received by "Certificate", both were "Dismissed" on 23 September 1901, and both went to "Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland", whereabouts not stated. The pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church between 1 January 1898 and 1 December 1908 was William R. Harshaw. Does anyone know of a Free Presbyterian Church in West Pittston or nearby, and whether records are available? Thanks, John Johnston New Zealand ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to PALUZERN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Does anyone have access to the index for wills/administrations for Luzerne Co - ca 1804 - 1810. ???? I see according to the newspaper the Federalist that Charles Holloway was administrator for his fathers estate and that it had not been settled and that the county was posting a letter to him for its closure. by April 1805 Isaac Holloway had died - by 1809 the estate was not settled. anything found regarding Isaac Holloway, Sarah Holloway or Charles Holloway is of great interest to me. they lived at Salem Township. Kindly, Jack Scott

I was going through some old papers and found this mail from a year and a half ago listing Penna. Churches. I don't ever recall using it until now. I am sure many of you have it but perhaps someone on the list does not. _http://www.churchangel.com/pennsylvania.htm#N_ (http://www.churchangel.com/pennsylvania.htm#N) Bill Fehlinger-Mays Landing NJ
I don't know if it might help you but, In the Parsons section of Wilkes-Barre there was a Pugh family. I don't remember the mans name but the woman was named Liz. This would have been in the early 1930's. Bill Fehlinger-New Jersey
Shelley My paternal grandmother was Stella May Phillips. Her parents were Aaron & Eliza Rollins Phillips. Stella married my grandfather, Phillip Huff Earl. One of their children was John Earl, who died at 3 years of age. My father was Clyde Earl. I would be very interested in getting this photo album as I have an old album with unidentified pictures and would love to know if they match. I am posting the will of George SMITH of Sandyston, Sussex Co., NJ to NJSUSSEX-L, PALACKAW-L and PALUZERN-L mailing lists because George Smith had several children and grandchildren who relocated to northeast Pennsylvania (noted below). Some of the script was difficult to interpret and I have indicated words that I was unable to interpret with _____ and words that I was not quite sure are correctly interpreted in parenthesis. Bob ONeill George SMITH/SCHMIDT was born in Germany. He married Maria Barbara BEUSCHLEIN in Bedminster Twp., Bucks Co., PA. The baptisms of seven of their children were recorded in Upper Mt. Bethel Township, Northampton Co., PA between 1775 and 1788. He removed to Sandyston Twp., Sussex Co., NJ after the revolutionary war. His will was recorded in Sussex Co., NJ in 1812. George SMITH (Est. 1750 - d. 1812) +Maria Barbara BEUSCHLEIN (b. 16 Mar 1755, d. bef. 1800) 1. Jacob SMITH (19 May 1775 - 29 Aug 1831)[Executor of will] +Susan FRUTCHEY ii. Frederick SMITH * iv. Words are spelled herein as they occur in the will. [2] Line breaks are the same as occur in the will. [3] There are two transcription errors in the will extract for Georg Smiths in the State of New Jersey Index of Wills, Inventories Etc. in the Office of the Secretary of State Prior to 1901 [Comp. by the Office of the Secretary of State. Vol. 3. (State of N.J.; 1913) 1996]. First, the home of Georg Smith is Sandyston, but the index lists it as Hardyston. Second, his last child is Sarah, not Hanah/Tanah as stated in the index. In both cases, a stylized capital S was mistaken for an H. [4] yearly inserted in the text with a carrot notation above the indicated line; this insertion is noted at the bottom of the will. [5] Evfia by my interpretation; difficult to read. The New Jersey Will index says Eufia. She is probably Anna Eva, who was baptized at Mount Bethel Lutheran and Reformed Congregations in Upper Mount Bethel Township [Seven children of George Smith and Maria Barbara Beuschlein are listed in John T. Humphrey. Pennsylvania Births. Northampton County, 1733-1800. Gateway Press. 1991. pg 188-190. In birth order, they are Jacob, Margaret, Leonard, Anna Eva, Elizabeth, Christian and Elias. Leonard is absent from the will and may have predeceased his father. The other children match the order listed in the will exactly and Anna Eva matches Eufia in birth order. [6] Sarah was originally put ahead of Elias in the order of children; Elias name was superimposed to efface Sarahs name. [7] Sarah, Index says Hanah/Tanah; initial S mistaken for H as in Sandiston (see above) PAGE 2: Sussex County fr.: David van Doran one of the witnesses to the written testament being duly sworn did (depose) + say, that he saw George Smith the testator therein named sign and seal the same + heard him pronounce and declare the will in writing to be his last will and testament and at the _______the said testator was of sound thinking mind and memory as far as the deponent knows + actually believes, and that Michael Cook and Peter van Ness the other subscribing _____ were present at the same time, and signed their names in writing to the said will together with him deposed in the presence of said testator David van Doren Sworn at Newton the 21st day of September anno Domini1812 before me D. My great grandmother was born Catherine Slota (Szlotta and other variations). She married Jan Siry (Sirij and variations) in what is now estern Slovakia. Jan died there in 1890 which I have confirmed in church records. Catherine's brother Jan Slota came to the US with his sons. They lived in Breslau area of Wilkes BArre. I found them in the US Census. . Catherine came to the US and married a man with the surname Martin. Her two sons and one daughter came to the US in different years. They all took the surname Martin. Martin can be a Slavic name. The family was devout --So-- Catherine would have married somewhere in the Breslau/Plymouth/ area (maybe as far as Scranton). Catherin's family was Byzantine rite. Any thoughts? Gloria
Thanks, Laurie! I've been looking for the church my great grandmother belonged to, but I only had the minister's name from her obituary. Now, thanks to you, I know! Can anyone tell me the names of the Byzantine Orthodox or Greek Catholic churches that were in existance in the greater Wilkes Barre/Scranton area before 1902? My great grandmother came to the area between 1890 and 1900 and was married and died during that time. I can find no record of her at all in the US. census. She would have lived in the Breslau/Plymouth area. I have searched the civil records of marriages and deaths with no success. I am now thinking I should search old church records. Gloria
I am also interested in these churches especially in 1889. My gr. grandparents were married in Hollywood. And all their children were born there. I need to find the Baptismal records for their children. I have contacted every church in the area that was around in 1889 but have had no luck finding the records. There must be one I don't know about. Debbie
