Dear Marie, Regarding the Cranberry Area in Hazleton. My brother and I have also been trying to find out some info on this area. We also posted on this site with not too much success. Here is what we learned. Last summer we took a trip to Hazleton, my brother from Michigan and Me from Florida. We drove around Hazleton (our second trip) and we found that the Cranberry area is just that, a small area South of town, with its main street called Cranberry. Hence Cranberry section. It was a poorer section of town from what we gathered, close to the entrance of the Coal Mine there. The Cranberry Mines. The Coal company built a bunch of houses, probably 4 room cracker boxes. Kitchen, 2Br. and maybe a living room. They were built up and left unpainted, and rented to the miners. They paid their rent to the Co., they bought food in the Co store and everything that they seemed to earn, went back to the company. Our GF lived in that section of town for a short while, but moved 'uptown', the otherside of Broad and Diamond Ave, on Carson St. His brother lived in the Cranberry section all of his life. (He was born in Poland and came to America, moved to the Cranberry section and died there. He did manage to buy his house there though. My father used to go to school in that area, and used to play baseball in the cranberry section. There is not much left of that era, there are just a bunch of small single family houses in that area. Happy New Year to all! My cousin and I are trying to find information concerning families named Chura and Gallo. I know that we have posted queries to this list before, but at the time we were not able to pinpoint any location more specific than Luzerne County or Hazleton. The few clues that we have gathered since then, however, seem to be pointing more specifically toward the Cranberry area. We believe the Chura and Gallo families lived in the Cranberry area in the early 1900's - possibly even as early as the 1890's. The mothers in the two families were sisters, and their maiden name was Gliganic (variously spelled Gliganich, Gliganics, Gligonic, Glagonich, and so on). Both were immigrants from the town of Nizna Rybnica in Slovakia, and their religion was Byzantine Catholic. It is not clear if their husbands were also Slovak, so they may or may not have settled in a community of Slovak immigrants or near a Byzantine Catholic church. In the Gallo family, the parents' names were John and Helen. The names of the children that we know so far are Margaret, Helen, Mary, Joseph, John, and George. The family name may originally have been "Galyo." In the Chura family, the father's name was John. The names of the mother and children are unknown. There is a slight possibility that the family name might have been spelled "Csura." I am wondering if there is someone on the list who has done research concerning the Cranberry area in the 1890's and early 1900's and perhaps has access to directories that contain some record of these families. Or does someone have a suggestion as to how we might conduct further research in the Cranberry area for this time period? Thank you in advance for any help that you can give. Marie Power

I am going through old notes that I took when I interviewed an aunt (now deceased) 20 years ago and she spoke of an old cemetary in the Larksville/Plymouth area that fell into the mines - would have been late 1800's very early 1900's. Any ideas on what that cemetary was called and if the deceased were ever re-interred and if so where? She also spoke interchangeably of a Larksville Cemetary, Welsh Hill (cemetary), St. Vincent's in Larksville (cemetary)and St. Vincent's Pringle (cemetary). Can anyone help me with where they are and are they 4 separate cemetaries or different names for the same one(s)? Thanks in advance, Ruth FOLEY RILEY Mt.
