Thats what I ment about 'not smart enough'..back then women had almost no rights women 'knew little' and men 'knew everything'. Didn't matter that maby the women had far more intellegence than the guardian ...the guardian was a man ... women just had limited rights back then...if they had any...we were good enough to raise kids and take care of the house but where legal matters were concerned forget it....we could not apply to get citizenship our husbands and fathers did and passed it on to us..we just plain did not have any rights back then...seems to me a mother was intellegent enough to sign papers for apprenticeship papers as a guardian was...but she evidently was not allowed to...why because she was a women... I'm not sure that it had to do with being thought not smart enough, as much as that we ourselves were of limited legal standing and the responsibility of our fathers and husbands. If the the filer was a "minor over the age of 14" then, considering 14 year olds were regularly employed, he wasn't looking for someone to take care of him physically as much as legally. Perhaps a male guardian was needed to sign apprenticeship papers, for example, or it was the guardian himself to whom the child was "apprenticing". Definitely an interesting topic about which to learn more. Alaine __________________________________________________ Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Hello... I have not been able to find any evidence Habers in Hazleton before the 1920 census. They are supposed to have been in the area since coming to the US in 1892. Does anyone have access to phone books or directories or maybe a state census that could look up the name for me? I would also be interested in any information about this question concerning wards of the state and "if the mother was still living, why the children who were minors, given another guardian"? So if anyone happens to have some ideas pertaining to this, PLEASE respond in the Luzerne newslist so we can all benefit, okays? thanx :-) Thyme
I am puzzled about some information I have and I was wondering if anyone on the list could shed some light on the subject. Josephus Barber, b. abt. 1807, became a ward of the Orphans Court after the death of his father Samuel (DOD unknown). On August 5, 1823 he filed a petition to have a guardian named and it was granted. Pierce Smith was named. Zephaniah Barber (b. 1810) petitioned in 1825 "setting forth that he is a minor above the age of 14 years" and it was granted. John Perkins was named. Samuel Barber (b. unk) petitioned in 1830 and the guardian named was Pierce Smith. Would these brothers been made wards of the court if their mother was still living? Did they have to wait until they reached a certain age in order to petition for a guardian? What reason might there be that all three did not have the same guardian? If anyone could give me some insights as to the way the Luzerne County Orphans Court operated in the early 1800s I would be most appreciative. Might be cause women didn't have alot of rights back then...we were not smart enough to handle property, money or much of anything else but housework and kids.... I am searching for the Cemetery that my husbands ancestors are buried. the surname is ZIMMERMAN. Grandparents are Dail K. (1888-1977) and Mary Warner Zimmerman (1890- ). Great grandparents Ezra C. Zimmerman (1842-1900) and Susan Kline Zimmerman (1840-1934). The cemetery is known to be on the top of a hill. Any help locating this cemetery appreciated. Shirley
I would be interested in school employment records for the period of 1880 to 1900 to find what schools my grandparents taught. Marcy Pitkin

Hi List, Doug Nicol is right. Lake Louise is in Franklin Twp. Luzerne Co. near Orange. It is about 5 miles east of Dallas and can be reached from Rt 309 by taking Lower Demunds Road (when traveling north) or Hildebrant Road (when traveling south) to Ransom Road. Lake Louise Road turns left off Ransom Road. Priscilla Perry
If you go to this Luzerne County index map and click on Dallas Township, you can see a lake on the other side of the hill (east) from Kunkle, but it is unnamed on this 1873 atlas. Could this be the missing Lake Louise??? http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/maps/pa/county/luzerne/1873/ Ed McClelland, Alexandria, Virginia.
Hi: Lake Louise is becoming a Loch Ness Monster since so many people are seeing it in so many places. I, too, had a sighting!!! If one were to drive from the Demunds Road over the Orange Road, one would pass the Twin Oaks Golf course on the left. As one continues past the entrance to the top of the hill, there is a road that turns right. About a half mile down that road is Lake Louise (if it hasn't moved). It is only about one mile or two from Orange. Each time I go golfing, it's still there!!! Bob :-)
Hello Again Everyone, Well since last week I have run across some information that may be part of what I am looking for, but I need proof. The following information has been gathered from various sources including IGI and ancestral files, and a compilation forwarded to me by a researcher that had been completed by a Marilyn Kirby in about 1983. Unfortunately the address and phone number for Marilyn are no longer current, so I cant verify where she got her information. Hopefully someone out there in Luzerne land will recognize something! Here is what I think is the Family Group Information for William Hancock and Laura Smith but I need to be able to find proof for the children: William Hancock b Dec. 18, 1799 Wilkes Barre, Luzerne Co.
