According to Pennsylvania Genealogical Research, George K. Schweitzer: Each county is governed by 3 elected county commissioners who conduct elections, maintain county institutions, pay county expenses and levey and collect taxes. Records kept by them include minutes, tax lists and assessments, veterans' burials, soldicers' discharges, military enrollment and slave registers. The Prothontary functions as the clerk of the Court of Common Pleas (keeping its records) and also keeps records of the cases tried by justices of the peace. The records include judgments, case files, naturalizations, sheriff's orders and physicians' registers. The Clerk of the Court serves the Oyer and Terminer court and Jail Delivery and the Court of Quarter Sessions of the Peace. These records include minutes, dockets, trial summaries, case files, transcripts, coroner's inquests and slave returns. The Register of Wills and the Clerk of the Orphans Court makes arrangements for and keeps records of the proceedings of the Orphans' Court, records wills, births, deaths, marriages, guardianships, adoptions and supervises the settlement of estates.

Thyme, I live about 4 blocks from Shoemaker St and it does still exist. I starts in Exeter and goes thru West Wyo, Swoyerville and on to Luzerne. Locally here we call it the "Back Road". If you give me the house number I can tell you if it's still there. Ellen Gilroy
I did one for Lackawanna county from 1870 (when still a part of Luzerne) through 1920, it's on their web page. I am toying with doing the same for Luzerne. The problem is that it would have to start around 1790, and with all the counties that were formed from Luzerne, it could become very cumbersome. Incidentally I do have the list for 1900 Luzerne county, if you're interested in any particular location. -----Original Message----- From: NLyon@aol.com <NLyon@aol.com> To: PALUZERN-L@rootsweb.com <PALUZERN-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, February 08, 2001 3:27 PM Subject: [PALUZERN] Townships on the gov't census films >Hi all, > Now that more CD's are becoming available to buy, sure would lke somewhere >to have the townships that are on the rolls to be listed, wonder if someone >could look at one of the Historical Societies or somewhere and see is they >could be put on the website somewhere?? it would not be too many for the >early ones, but some of the later census have many rolls and its hard to know >what to buy because of what area they cover..unless I have just missed some >site that already has them listed?? > Just a thought but sure would help out :-) > Barbara Rentenbach > > >==== PALUZERN Mailing List ==== >Do you have access to information pertaining to Luzerne County and willing to do lookups to help others find their ancestors ? MARRIAGE LICENSES GRANTED: T P DAVIS, to LIZZIE EVANS, both of Nanticoke W H WALTON, of Plymouth, to D LEWIS, of Wilkes-Barre DEATHS: At Town Hill , Jan 28, of palsey, Mrs DORCAS SUTLIFF, aged 70 years KILLED ON THE RAIL: The body of a man, supposed to have been struck by the south bound midnight train on the valley road, was found about eighty feet from the station at Port Blanchard this morning. The dead man was identified as THOMAS CURRY, of Pleasant Valley, who was about 40 years of age, and leaves a wife and one child. EXPLOSION AT THE NOTTINGHAM: About 10:30 am today, a fall of rock in the Nottingham mine at Plymouth drove the accumulated gas into the gangways where the men were at work with lamps, and an explosion followed. The Leader reporter was unable to ascertain the exact number of men in the mine at the time, but up to 1 pm, eight had been taken out, one of whom, JOHN D HUMPHRIES, died on the way home, and another, JOSEPH JONES, is dying. The others injured are: JAMES DUNSON, fire boss, badly burned about the face and hands; THOMAS LAKE, whose daughter was killed in the squib factory explosion, slightly injured; JOHN P THOMAS, face and head cut by being thrown against the rib; DAVID FOX, badly burned; JOHN DENNIN, badly burned; PETER LYNN, burned and cut about the head and face. It is believed some of these will die. JOHN CROSSIN, a member of Company I, cannot be found, and it is supposed that he is covered up with the mule that he was driving. WORL ROBERTS is also missing. There are several others in the mine in numbers 5 and 6 gangways, about a mile and a half from the bottom of the shaft. Rescuers will have to climb up and down planes and slopes to reach them and it will undoubtedly be some time before they can be brought out. The explosion did comparatively little damage to the mine. Thanks for the great information Debbie. I've been to the sight several times, but somehow overlooked that title. I guess I thought it was a link to the LDS website. I would like to find out more information about the Orphans' Court, it's purpose and function. Does any body have some information on this? -----Original Message----- From: Debbie Maxwell [mailto:debmax@optonline.net] Sent: Wednesday, February 07, 2001 9:08 PM To: PALUZERN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [PALUZERN] LDS film numbers for Luzerne County Hi All, This is message is for any new people on the list or for anyone who hasn't surfed through the Luzerne County GenWeb site. Don't miss an opportunity to learn about genealogy and the internet. Jim from Folkfinders is going to speak at the genealogy society meeting at the VA Hosp. on Feb. 27th at 7:00 pm. I can't wait to meet him and thank him for the services he provides. I understand it's open to the public and you don't have to be a member to attend. This is the first I've heard of this genealogy society. Has anyone on the list been to their meeting? The resources for Luzerne Co. just keep growing and growing. Hello: To learn what LDS films and/or fische are available (for ALL locations), go to the LDS webpage at www.familysearch.org and search the "Family History Library Catalog". The URL is as follows: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp You can search the Family History Library catalog for a place, surname, author, call number or film/fische. According to a January 2001 press release, "the Family History Catalog is continually upgraded with more than 5,000 rolls of microfilm added each month from archives worldwide". That means you should check back occasionally to see what sources have been added to the Family History Catalog regarding your surnames and/or research areas. Also, don't forget to check out the (newer) "Pedigree Resource File" to see if distant cousins have submitted their research: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=prf/s earch_PRF.asp Good luck in your searches. I want to thank you all for the tons of responses I got about Shomaker St. !~!~! My first thought was it's one of those streets that no longer exist or was renamed.. I learn now there is a Shomaker St. and a Shomaker Ave. and both are still around. I had W. Wyoming but that didn't seem right to me....But there IS a W. There is a Shoemaker St, for sure, but it's exact location escapes me. It is either in W. Wyoming, Swoyersville or Kingston, at least in that general area, maybe possibly Forty Fort.
