Good evening researchers I just finished adding the Enumeration Districts for the 1840-1900 Luzerne County census. I also added the 1870 census index with NARA film numbers for the Townships. I hope you all find this useful in doing your research. You can access these a few different ways. 1 is by visiting the luzerne county genweb site and scrolling down to census. There you will find links to them. or 2. If you are already on the census page you can find them under the years they are for. Good luck in your search. Tammy Lamb
After I posted my thanks for the help about the SSDI, I received a lot of mail asking what the answer to my questions was. The replies were sent directly to me, and not posted to the list. But what everyone told me was that your only on the SSDI if a claimed was filed against your number, or if someone told SS that you died. One list member sent me this web site that was helpful: http://www.lineages.com/FirstSteps/AboutSSDI.asp Thanks again, Donna

I am trying to reconcile conflicting information on Mary Susannah, wife of Peter Gregory and Isaac Benscoter. According to the Benscoter genealogy, p. 505, Isaac Benscoter married, as his first wife, "Mary Susannah Gregory, nee Gearhart, who d. in 1806;..." She is given four children by Isaac Benscoter: 1. Susannah Benscoter, b. 7 June 1799; 2. Abram Benscoter, b. 1802; d. 1822; 3. Jacob Benscoter, b. 7 July 1804; and 4. Abigail Benscoter, m. Andrew Hontz; no issue; lived in Luzerne County. The Belles book, p. 35, gives the following account: Isaac Benscoter married first, Mary Susannah Fink, d. 1806, who was married first to a Gearhart by whom she had: 1. Mary Gearhart, m. Shadrach Austin; 2. Susan Gearhart, no further record; and second to George C. Gregory and had 3. George Gregory; 4. Peter Gregory; 5. Richard Gregory. This account is erroneous in that Mary Susannah was married to Peter Gregory, not George; Mary, wife of Shadrach Austin was a Gregory; and Susan Gearhart is probably confused with Mary Susannah's daughter Susannah Benscoter. An account of Mary Susannah, which I accessed on Rootsweb.com, calls her a daughter of George Gearhart, b. 1740 in Germany, and his wife Ann Van Horn. This account gives this couple 11 children ending with Mary Susannah, b. 27 April 1762. The preceding children were born two years apart starting with a daughter Ann, born in 1742!! What a precocious father she had!! Needless to say this account is suspect. Finally, in Bradsby's History of Luzerne County, one finds on p. 657 the following: "The first settlement outside of what is now Shickshinny borough was made in the northwest of River mountain, in 1790, by Peter Gregory and George Fink. These men had married each other's sisters, and had come from the valley of the Delaware." So, who was Mary Susannah? Was she George Fink's sister or was she a Gearhart? David

I would like to order the LDS reels for the WW I draft registration cards for Scranton. But I need the registration district numbers (I have the addresses). Are these registration numbers the same as the ward numbers on the census pages? If not, would anyone know how I would find this? Sandy
Thanks for the quick reply. My Julia Bower was born circa 1842 and married in Sept 1860, died ca. 1888 to 1890. So mine would not match up with yours. Hi Anyone have a Murry Strait 1896 died 10-8-1955 wife Maude 1900-1955 Thank you Mark
Hello, I can't remember if I posted this or not - if so, here it is again. I'm looking for the family of Wingblad(e). Emil & Helen Wingblade had at least two children born in or around Newton, PA - Cecelia and Lydia around 1885 to 1895. There were two other children - Walter and Rosa - but I'm not sure where they were born. Does anyone have access to the 1880, 1890, or 1900 census for Luzerne Co.? Thank you. Priscilla
Dear Researchers For the time being I am going to allow all replies to go to the list as a test. This is on a trial period to see how it goes. I did try this one before and then people started taking advantage of it by advertising companies and others started slamming people for posting things. Anyone caught overstepping the guidelines step up on the list will be removed without warning. Any displeaser's with a post to privately mail me. please read the following guidelines so I don't have to remove anyone. IMPORTANT GUIDELINES FOR POSTING TO PA-LUZERN are as Following: 1. Purpose. The PALUZERN-L list is for discussion of the history of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, and the genealogy of Luzerne County families. Discussion of history and genealogy of the part of Luzerne County that became Bradford, Susquehanna, Lackawanna & Wyoming county is also welcome. 2. The custodian of the PALUZERN-L list is Tammy Lamb tamlamb@icontech.com. If you have problems getting unsubscribed from the list or have any other difficulties with the list, write to me (not to the list) and I'll try to resolve the problem. 3. Message format and attachments. Please submit messages only in plain text, and don't submit attachments. Many of our subscribers are using software that cannot read attachments. Please, always use a helpful subject line like "John DOE d. 1800 in Wilkes Barre Pa", rather than a generic one like "inquiry about my family line". 4.Advertising. Technically, RootsWeb has a "no commercial use" policy. Like all RootsWeb policies, though, the last thing that we want is for policy to get in the way of our doing genealogy. Therefore, the PALUZERN list will accept brief announcements of books and other resource material for sale that is specifically related to this county. Don't include prices and ordering info; just include a pointer to a URL, a commercial mailing list, or an E-mail address where the complete ordering information can be found. In case of doubt, send the message to the list custodian, tamlamb@icontech.com, and I'll review it and forward it to the list if appropriate. 5. Archives. At present, the archival copies are stored at Rootsweb.com and can be retrieved by anyone. To get a list of the messages that have been archived, send a message to PALUZERN-L-request@rootsweb.com with the subject archive SEARCH Subject: latest/* and nothing in the body of the message. You'll get back a message that looks like this: ARCHIVE search subject: latest/* BEGIN---------------cut here------------------ latest/23:10:Subject: Re: John DOE query (fwd) latest/24:12:Subject: Looking for Samuel FORWOOD latest/25:15:Subject: inquiry latest/26:15:Subject: Hitchcock Md.>Ar.>Ok.>Ar. & other western states latest/27:17:Subject: Jon Harlan END-----------------cut here------------------ If you decide you want to read the message about John Harlan, the "latest/27:" part of the line identifies the file containing the message. Send another message to PALUZERN-L-request@rootsweb.com with the subject archive SEND latest/27 and nothing in the body. You can request several messages at once, but please don't request more than ten at a time. 6. No-nos. Please do not submit virus alerts, chain letters, or other off-topic material to the list. Don't send copies of copyrighted material. Vulgarity and personal attacks on other list members are also unwelcome. Don't send messages exceeding 8 kilobytes in length. If someone else violates these rules, please do not send their message back to this list! That just magnifies the problem, and defeats our anti-spam defenses at Rootsweb. 7. Instructions on how to order a copy of the list's welcome message: (this message) Open a NEW e-mail message. Send it to: PALUZERN-L-request@rootsweb.com In the subject line type one word: archive In the body type only this text: get welcome.txt Turn OFF your signature file. Send the message. The "Railroad Info" button of the FolkFinders Web Site has recently been updated to include Railroad Fatalities, as they appeared in the Wilkes-Barre Record Almanac (covering the period 1895 through 1931). Included is the individual's name, and the date of the railroad fatality. Perhaps somewhere in the 1,417 entries you may find an ancestor.
