    1. [PALUZERN] Hazleton Plain Speaker Address?
    2. Hi Group, Is there a way to get a copy obituary from back up issues of the Hazleton Plain Speaker? I'm interested in getting a copy of an obituary from 1949. If someone could give me an email address or a postal address of the newspaper or perhaps a historical society or library that is willing to do lookups I would be grateful. Thanks in advance. 1. [PALUZERN] Delayed birth certificates
    2. Hello: Don't forget to explore the "Family History Library Catalog at the following (lengthy) URL to see what information is available for Luzerne County: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.a sp?display=localitydetails&subject=187908&subject_disp=Pennsylvania,_L uzerne&columns=*,180,0 Included on this Luzerne County list under "Vital Records" is the "Delayed register of births, filed 1941-1973". What is a delayed birth certificate? Many times a birth certificate wasn't issued for a person born around the turn of the century. In order to obtain a "delayed" birth certificate (issued years following the birth), they had to submit proof. This proof might include letters from physicians, relatives, life insurance policies, etc. My mother-in-law had to do obtain a delayed birth certificate when she retired and went to apply for social security benefits. At age 60 years plus, many of the "witnesses" were gone and it was a frustrating task for her to accomplish. These delayed birth records, however, contain some good information. Don't forget to consider them. Ruth Ann

    1. [PALUZERN] JUDGE families in Cty. Mayo
    2. Dear Friends, I recently sent to No. Cty. Mayo Heritage Centre for info on my Patrick and Mary JUDGE and they sent some info to me that I think might help some of you. Here's what they sent: Pat John JUDGE married Mary CUSACK, Hill Street, Ballina, on the 11th of November, 1826. The witnesses to the marriage were John CUSACK and Cat CLARKE. No issue was registered to this couple. Bridget JUDGE, Glandagh in Kilfian, daughter of Pat JUDGE and Margaret COLLINS was baptised on the 2nd of February, 1827. Her sponsors were Philip BARRETT and Bridget COLLINS. Bridget had the following siblings; Sara, Eliza and Martin. Ann JUDGE, Knocknagun, daughter of Michael JUDGE and Mary LAVELLE, was baptised on the 2nd of July, 1832. Her sponsors were Anthony and Mary LAVELLE. Ann JUDGE had the following siblings: Anthony, Cate and Michael. Anne JUDGE, daughter of Thomas JUDGE and Anne WILLIS, was baptised on the 19th of June 1836. Anne JUDGE had the following siblings: Patrick and Michael. Pat JUDGE and Mary O'HORA, Knocknagun, had twins Nelly and Mary in 1838. The info they sent might not help me, the dates and names don't jibe at this time, but I will continue research. I hope this helps some of you. Mary L. Casey in Michigan

    1. Re: [PALUZERN] Looking for Probate or Estate Records - Robert Seeley Kingston...
    2. To tell you the truth, I haven't worked much on this line. My g-g-g-grandmother was Jerusa Miller, wife of Andrew Miller. They appear in Schuylkill Co. PA by 1860, and their daughter Mesilla Alice Miller was my g-g-grandmother, she married Josiah Rumbel son of Joshua & Louisa "Lucy" Singley Rumbel. I know Jerusa died in March 1900, and have a photograph someone took of her gravestone, but could never find anything more on her. At the time of the 1870 census, she & husband are still in Schuylkill Co., but next to HER name it states she owns real estate - not next to his name, next to hers. That made me think that perhaps she inherited some property, but could never link her to any parents. After a 2-yr search, a very studious clerk at the Pottsville courthouse finally located a death certificate for her - it was under Mrs. Andrew Miller - and gave her maiden name as Seeley born in Luzerne Co. The only Seeley's that appear in Luzerne Co. for the time-frame of her birth is Robert & I think John - in Kingston Twp. A quick look at the 1850 census for Robert & Mary Seeley in Kingston Twp. Luzerne Co. - what a surprise, no Jerusa but there is a Masilla. And my Jerusa named a daughter Masilla. I think I am looking at the same family - I think because of the similarities in the names of "Masilla" Seeley and "Mesilla" Alice Miller, I am looking at mother & daughter. And am hoping the probate, estate, will or obit for Robert Seeley will help me determine if this is so. Thanks for your info ~ I'll give the courthouse a try and see if anything turns up. ~gina~ Visit my homepage at http://hometown.aol.com/ginaburningsky/myhomepage/business.html <A HREF="http://burningskyenterprises.com/">Burningskyenterprises.com</A>

    3. Wilkes-Barre Evening Leader, Thu, Mar 6, 1890 MARRIAGES: The marriage of Miss AGNES DAVIS and DAVID RICHARDS took place last evening at the bride’s residence, 10 Airy Street, by Rev Hughes of Ashley. The bridesmaid was Miss REBECCA RICHARDS, sister of the groom, groomsman HENRY BEERS. In Wilkes-Barre Mar 4, by Rev A Griffin, W C NAGLE, and Miss EMMA MITCHELL, all of this city MARRIAGE LICENSE GRANTED: JOHN F DAVIS, Audenreid RUTH DAVIS, Jeansville DEATHS: At Cranberry mar 5, the infant son of Mr and Mrs JOHN KOCH At Pittston, EVA IRENE, daughter of WILLIAM and the late CATHERINE THRASH, aged 10 months and 20 days In this city Mar 3, CHARLES B ROTH, of consumption, aged 36 years In Parsons Mar 6, JAMES STAPLE, aged 16 months FUNERAL: The funeral of CHARLES ROTH took place took place from the residence of the deceased’s brother ERNEST ROTH, at 2 o’clock this afternoon. Rev H L Jones and Rev H E Hayden officiated and a choir from St Stephen’s church sung. Interment was made in Hollenback cemetery. MINE ACCIDENT: RICHARD PARRY was injured seriously by a fall of rock in the Hillman Vein colliery yesterday. It was his first day’s work in the mines. PLYMOUTH MINE ACCIDENT: Mine disasters seem to be contagious. The accident, which occurred in No. 12 Plymouth Coal Co.’s colliery, and which was reported in the Leader, hurt two men so badly that they are not likely to recover. One of them, JAMES LEONARD, aged 28 years, married, with a wife and one child, had his right arm fractured, one eye blown out, and his left leg broken in three or four places. THOMAS OWENS, aged 32 years, married with a wife and several children, had both legs broken. They were tamping a rock hole when the blast exploded. SOUTH WILKES-BARRE MINE DISASTER: The condition of things at the South Wilkes-Barre colliery remains about the same as yesterday, with the exception that efforts to flood No. 3 shaft are progressing and meeting with success. An accurate sounding was made at 11 o ’clock this morning and 57 ½ feet of water was found. It will be necessary to add 369 feet to this before the level is reached of the working in which the blazing tunnel is located. This will take several days. MINER’S PLIGHT IN PLYMOUTH: There is no use in longer disguising the fact that many families in this locality are hard up. Even when the collieries made three-quarter time they had as much as they could do to keep body and soul together. Now, however, when the collieries are working only a few days in every month, with no prospect of doing better, people are becoming discouraged as hunger and want stare them in the face. Indeed, many who are supposed to be in easy circumstances, are in actual need. BRIEFS: >From Plymouth, MICHAEL O’DONNELL and family moved yesterday from Mount Pleasant, near Hazleton, to Welsh Hill. Ed, Phoenix

    1. Re: [PALUZERN] Wilkes-Barre Evening Leader, Thu, Mar 6, 1890
    2. A few comments! Ed: We all deeply, very deeply, appreciate these posts, and hope you will have the energy, etc., to keep them coming. This growing "database" covers even the year of the tragedy-bound 1890 census, and is all the better for that. But you know these things, and why I feel impelled to write is this: It looks like a lot of my family, in the last decade of the 19th century, came to Camden, NJ. This particular issue of the Wilkes-Barre Evening Leader not only mirrors what many of us have suspected, but puts it into the print of the times, thus assuring us that it was archived that conditions had really reached that point where many would have to turn to other sources for income and food. This is a beacon issue, I think. I intend to copy and paste this into my notes, as a major part of the motivational drive to come to Camden. Thanks, Ed! 2. Pamela Wagoner
    3. Ed McClelland posted the link to the 1873 maps of Luzerne county and townships therein. Thank you, thank you. Is this a crack in my brick wall???? I noticed that a Mrs. Boyle is listed in 1873 as owning the property on Wyoming Street directly across the street from the R.C. Church (which I assume is St. Gabriel's). In the 1886-1888 Boyd's city directories my William J. Boyle is listed as living at 125 S. Wyoming and in the 1900 census he's listed at 127 S Wyoming. I've always thought both addresses were across the street from St. Gabriels. Could this Mrs. Boyle in 1873 be my William's mother?? Other than writing St. Gabriels and asking for any Mrs. Boyle's who died between 1873-1886, does anyone have any ideas about how to pursue this? With records that still exist, of course. 1 William J. The flooding process continues today, but there must be long and tedious delay before the fire will be subdued by these means. ANOTHER FATAL MINE ACCIDENT: JAMES LENNARD and THOMAS OWEN were badly hurt at the Plymouth Coal Co. shaft in Plymouth this morning. They had entered the mine accompanied by six rock miners. They prepared a blast but put an iron cap on instead of a wooden one. The iron cap exploded fatally injuring LENNARD, and injuring OWEN so that he will probably be crippled for life.
