Hi Listers, I've written to St. Mary's on numerous occasions asking for information. In my last letter I actually had the exact date of the marriage and the priest who performed the ceremony. Still no answer. Has anyone else had this problem with this particular church? I was given the name of St. Joseph's RC Church as the church where my grandparents were married, and in no time I had a reply with a copy of the actual record from the church book. Dorothy, from St. Joseph's wrote a very nice note with the record of the marriage. Father Hutter from St. John's Byzantine Church has also been most helpful with my many questions, and in fact sent back a check that I enclosed with my letter. Each church has their own way of doing things, I'm sure, but it would be interesting to see what others have found to be the case with their inquiries. Thanks, Elly
Hello, Would someone happen to know the address of St. Michael's Greek Catholic Church in Freeland, Luzerne County, Pa. I am interested in writing there to see if I might be able to obtain records. Thanks, Missy Zuber Atco, NJ

Ed Langley posted another Wilkes-Barre excerpt that contained this: >From Plymouth: In consequence of the large number of empty houses in this borough, a great many of the landlords have reduced the rent 25 and 30 per cent. Those who still adhere to war prices are apt to become April Fools if they persist in maintaining rental usury. Since my family members were apparently largely in this area, I am wondering exactly what was meant. Does this refer to the Civil War, figuratively? Are prices high for rentals during a war? I would think they would be low! Less people, and all that. Is this a reflection of what we read the other day, about hard times in Plymouth? Was it not so bad in other areas of the coal-mining districts of Luzerne? Surely there is something here that is different -- and for some particular reason. Was there a particular colliery struggling here? If so, why? I hope some among us might have an answer, or at a bit of input. Thanks, Vince Summers
I have two pictures. One of Charles Albert Franke b. 1826 and one of his wife Julia Katherine Stienbuch Franke b. 01/20/1835. They are my husbands ggg grandparents. They came to America in 1855. and may have settled in Reading or Wilkes-Barre. The pictures are in frames with the name of STRUNK 730 Penn St., Reading, PA. On the back of these pictures is written; >From Grossherzog Thum S. Weiman Eise Nach Frankfort on Main. Can someone tell me what this means. Thank You Shirley
Trying to figure out why my husband's Italian great grandparents would move from Middletown, CT in 1882/1884 to Wilkes Barre. As far as we know, they had no other family in the US. Was there a large Italian community there at that time? From there they moved to Chicopee, MA. That's another question, how they ended up there. According to his daughter, he always wanted to live near "water". Is there a river that goes through Wilkes Barre? We know he was a seaman, so that would account for his love of water. Thank you, Joanne

Hello Researchers I just finished adding the 1920 Census Enumeraton Districts to the Luzerne county genweb site. To access this, visit the luzerne county genweb page, scroll down to census and you will find the link there. Hope you find it helpful in your search. Tammy
I am new to this list and wondered if there was a site for Catholic Churches in Wilkes Barre. I am interested in a church that would have been in existence in 1884. These ancestors were Italian, so I imagine if there was an Italian church, that would be my first choice. Also, from what we can determine they were in Wilkes Barre from 1884 to maybe 1899. Was there a census during that time period? I am looking for Mattia/Mathew De Melchior and his wife Teresa Pittaluga or Teresa Mason and their children. Thank you, Joanne Darcy Chicopee, MA
Hello lists~this is a duplicate message that I sent sometime during February and I never received it back in my email box, so I assume it is lost with the other February messages. Here is my question to all you experts: My gggmother (b.1838 and d. 1920)re-married after her first husband died. Her 2nd husband preceded her in death and I know she died in Factoryville. Do you think the state could find her death certificate if I do not know her 2nd husbands name but have all of her other stats? (PS The GRITMAN family line is pretty complete and it shows all of the details except for the 2nd marriage name) Thanks for any help...Curly Happy St. Patty's Day to all... _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
I hope this does not duplicate! I attempted to send an email on this subject, but fear I messed it up. Does anyone shoe the name, PERIT, as listed below? This name is becoming important to me, as it connects to my direct WEATHERLY ancestors (David Sr., was the one for whom Weatherly, PA was named. There is a neat story behind this. Hence, I created a web page for it.) Vince Summers Database: Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania Wills, 1682-1819 from Ancestry.com. I am particularly curious about these lines, if anyone can help, since I have a Ruth L. Perit marrying a Joseph Lawson Weatherly (his father was the cause of the name Weatherly, PA -- I can provide details on this if desired). Does anyone recognize the name PERIT, etc.? I am trying to locate a cemetery in Pittston, or W.Pittston that is affiliated with St Roccos Church also in Pittston. Appreciate help.
Dear List, A friend from another list just directed me to the following. Thought those of you with Irish coal miners for ancestors might be interested in looking at this. I am not endorsing this pro or con. Just wanted to pass it along for anyone interested.
