Listers, I mailed a letter on March 27, 2001 to St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Wilkes Barre, asking for specific searches (i.e., not "anything on John Smith etc."), enclosed a donation and indicated that I would understand completely any delay in responding. Didn't do any good. Received a form letter reply on April 1st with my original letter and check enclosed. The form letter basically said that due to volumne of requests, they don't do genealogical searches and referred me to the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society (WHGS). As a member myself of a small, old Catholic church in Md, (I think St. Mary's would probably be considered a large, old church)I am very sympathetic of their "plight" - lots of records that lots of people want to see and no staffing to accomplish same. All the same, it is very frustrating as a genealogist. A couple of thoughts/suggestions: 1st - I will see what, in fact, the WHGS has for St. Mary's - I would be amazed if they had baptismal etc records, but I'll try to find out when I'm there this coming Saturday. 2nd - I have just become aware that the NorthEastern Pennsylvania Genealogical Society (NEPAGS) has just published a 4 volume set containing all the cemetery records for this parish (its available for sale - the entire set or by volume - they are in volumes by alphbet, not by date) - I don't know if that work has been purchased by WHGS or not. I will try to find that out, too. 3rd - Sometimes, if you can stand the wait, you wait until the paster who put the moritorium on searches, is assigned to another parish and then you make your request again - and hope the new paster can find a way to accomodate your request - sort of like a new administration. 4th - If someone who is genealogically inclined is a member of that parish and has time to donate, perhaps they could speak to their paster about offering to do look-ups for a small donation to the parish (perhaps designate a specific use for the funds, like the homeless or something similar) - a win/win for the parish which would receive charitable contributions in the bargain. And that's my two cents worth! I'll let you know what I discover when I return next week. Regards, Ruth FOLEY RILEY Mt. Andrew Furey a miner was killed by a fall of coal. Mr. Furey had just put off a blast and had returned to the breast to see what the result was, when a portion of the roof fell on him crushing the life out instantly. Andrew Furey was about forty years old and has been resident of Old Pink Ash Jeddo borough for about twenty-five years and all of that time has been a worker in the mines. He has many relatives yet living in Foster township. Daniel Furey ex Poor Director is an uncle and Miss Furey a school teacher of that township is a sister of his. Brian Mitchell has compiled three books of passenger lists, and other books about Ulster genealogy, does anybody have access to this one? * Irish Emig. Lists, 1833-1839. Thanks to all the people who tried to help me with the Hazleton map. The problem seems to stem from being on a Macintosh. Lots of people sent detailed instructions on how to manipulate the image and then stated they weren't very computer savvy. Nancy resized the image and sent it to me. That worked fine if you ever run across another Mac person with a jpeg problem. I can upsize the image by putting it into Photoshop. Thanks again. Pam
Can anyone tell me what funeral home existed in the 1902-1910 period that Irish Catholics from Taylor would probably use (other than Eagen in Minooka). It appears the funeral director's name was George Timlin. I am interested in deterring if that funeral parlor still exists today or has been taken over by someone else. Thanks Walt
Hi. Good to see your post. As you will recall, I have Kelly also, though possibly different ones. Why I right, however, is to remind all (I thought of this after seeing your post) that it is also good to post data from these forms to Post-Notes on Rootsweb. That way, someone does not have to find a homepage to obtain valuable data, or to get in contact with the one posting it. Here is the way to get there. Let's choose William H. GORDON, as you list below: Go to: http://ssdi.rootsweb.com/ Enter what data you can. SSN is the easiest for entry. Other data for a search. Okay! Up pops your William H. GORDON. See the far right column? Click on Add Post-em. Now it is true that if you are not registered (free) with Rootsweb, and thus given a username and password, which is good for all Rootsweb transactions of data, you will not be able to get in. Why if you could, and if you were malicious, you could wreck a lot of people's hard work! But if you get that user name and password, you can put in your email address, homepage address, data galore on your relative, and thus have one of the best ways of being found by others, which is half the work and more of finding ancestors. I get much, much more success by others finding me than I do by searching for them. So please do not pass up this opportunity folks! Why doesn't the historical society or some other interested group make a reprinted book available. Chester Co Historical Society has published a soft cover reprint of all the maps and make it available for a reasonable $14. I am sure that it would be a money maker for the Society. I use my Chester Co maps all the time and would really appreciate being able to buy a corresponding Luzerne Co copy. Linda Moss
