My grandfather spoke of a Peter Harris, who as a young man escaped native attacks (possibly the wyo. massacre) by hiding in a hollow log. He never said we were descended from this Peter, though I think that was his intention to impart. 1. [PALUZERN] Old St. Paul's Methodist Church, Pittston
    2. Kathleen Cooper
    3. Perusing some old correspondence, I discovered some information possibly linking my family to St. Paul's Methodist Church in Pittston. It was established in 1852 and originally known as The Wesleyan Methodist Church. In 1861, the church was located at 68 Broad Street, and in 1922 a parsonage at 148 William Street was erected. Apparently the "St. Paul's" was dropped and the church was later known simply as the Methodist Church. A search on the Web turned up a Methodist Church at 26 Broad Street -- is this the same church? Can anyone tell me if early records are available? I don't see anything on the Luzerne Co. Web site list of films. Thanks, Kathleen Cooper kathleencooper@bigfoot.com

    3. Providence, PA, was an original borough which became part of the city of Scranton. This section of town centered at Market St. and N. Main Ave. is still referred to by that name today. It is also generally referred to as North Scranton. -----Original Message----- From: Vcah@cs.com <Vcah@cs.com> To: PALUZERN-L@rootsweb.com <PALUZERN-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, April 17, 2001 8:49 PM Subject: [PALUZERN] Providence Hi List, In a 1909 obituary of a Wilkes-Barre resident two of her children were listed as living in Providence (no state given). Pam, I think you will find that in most of these cases, orphaned children were simply taken in by relatives who were willing to give them a home. It is not likely that there were legal guardianships or any monetary compensation involved. David

    1. [PALUZERN] What? STOCKHAM in Plymouth? Connected to a DAVEY...
    2. This came as a surprise to me, folks... I have been exclusively looking for my father's lines in Luzerne County, and doing a search for one of my mother's lines, I found a George STOCKHAM (not, George! I have 6 of them already!) in Luzerne on Tammy's site. The following is an excerpt of a DAVIES that shows a connection: Benjamin DAVEY, Sr., mine contractor, Wilkes-Barre, was born in Cornwall, England, November 28, 1846, a son of Benjamin and Ann (Firstbrook) Davey. He was reared and educated in his native country, where he began life in the mines at twelve years of age, and followed the different grades of mining from a beginner up, until 1866. He then came to America, locating in northern Michigan, where he was employed in the copper mines for five years. In 1871 he located in Wilkes-Barre, and since has been continuously engaged in mining, contracting, sinking shafts, etc., with the exception of one year spent in California in the gold mines. In 1887, Mr. Davey formed a partnership with John Wasley, under the firm name of Davey & Wasley. Mr. Davey has twice been married: first in 1866 to Caroline, daughter of Bartholomew and Mary (Ninners) Youren, of Cornwall, England, by whom he had three children, Benjamin Jr., Carrie and Thomas; his second wife was Anna, daughter of George Stockham of Plymouth, Pa, and by her he has two children, Hannah and George. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and of the I.O.F.; in politics, he is a Republican. Can anyone tell me of any STOCKHAM connection or data you may have? This is a most interesting line. Although I have only ever found them in PA/MD/and Camden, NJ, the Ohio group (the largest, I suspect) seems possibly to have come from an "illegitimate" offspring of an early one of these, born around the time of the war of 1812. All that I have found of my line have never spelt it STOCKUM or STOCKEM, etc., but only STOCKHAM, though rarely I have seen them referred to with these spellings. Thanks, Vince Summers

    3. I am new at this so please excuse me for posting this way. I hope my message will reach a lot of people. I am looking for ENGLEHARD/ENGLEHART ancestors and have been stuck at the >same point for quite some time now. My g-g-grandfather is John Englehart born August 30, 1827, I think Germany. I got the birth date from his head stone at the cemetery, St Matthews Church in Quakake PA. The earliest record I have of my John is the 1850 census and he is in Schuylkill Co, Tamaqua PA, a boarder in a mining field. He is married to Catherine Bloom/Blum and they have a daughter Mary born in 1847. I also find him at St John's church in Tamaqua attending the service with Eva Elizabeth Engelhardt. I later find Eva Elizabeth Engelhardt at Grace Reformed Church in Hazleton PA, see the following information. GRACE REFORMED CHURCH 169 N. 3. Am I correct in believing that Plains is in Wilkes-Barre Township? I was planning to search ancestry's 1880 census for Luzerne, but W-B Twp. isn't listed and I want to be sure... I'm researching John J. McGinnis, who supposedly lived in Plains for a short time and Julia Moran McGinnis, who had Moran, Walsh and Hines family in the W-B area. Both John and Julia worked at the Sterling Hotel prior to their marriage in Luzerne Cty. in 1882. Thanks, Terri __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
