    3. HI: You say that you have tracked him back to Pa. Do you mean when he was older than three? He may have lived long enough to have a SS #.,in which case he would have provided all the information to the SS Admn. Some of the SS Numbers go back to 1941. I wonder how many George O'Connors are on the Social Security Death Index? 3. Hi all, I'm hoping that some of you with more experience might be kind enough to offer me some ideas with my dilemma. The only place in the 1880 soundex I've been able to find someone matching the relative I'm looking for is in Luzerne County ( Hazle twp, dimond). To the best of my knowledge, George O'Connor (O'Conner) birthdate is Aug. 1877 (not verified yet). I found a 3 year old George on that census. I would like to get the birth record, but according to the information I've found on getting records is that they are only avail from 1893 on. Anyone have any ideas on how I may be able to obtain birth info on this person? I've tracked him back to PA but unfortunately I don't have the parents names to match up with the census info, so my best hope is to match the birthdate info. Thanks for listening (or reading as the case may be!) and any ideas would be greatly appreciated. MaryBeth

    1. [PALUZERN] Searching the U.K. and an explanation...
    2. Folks, As you know, my father's lines are "from" Luzerne County. That is, my BURST, SOMMERS, KELLY, POTTS, LARGE, BROGAN, MILLER, CATTANEO are all at one time, usually for years, to be found in Luzerne. Now I am not sure where most of them are from, but I do know that the ones I am aware of come through Canada, and quite probably from England. The time period for most would have been the first third or so of the 19th century. POTTS appears to be the last quadrant of the 19th century. So many of us, likely, have our lines having roots in Merry Olde England. There is an 1881 online U.K. Census Service (Free!) at: http://censusuk.co.uk I have been asked about this, since my request, and since I am having trouble getting in touch somewhat due to computer troubles of a serious nature, I am taking the liberty of letting one and all on Luzerne know of this, since I am aware that it affects a number with Luzerne Roots. 1. [PALUZERN]
    2. Good Morning (for 11 more minutes!): I am in cahoots with another POTTS researcher, since it is almost certain we share the same lines. If someone onboard has access to the 1900 Soundex, would you please see if you can come up with: Charles POTTS, about 25 years old. He would have been born in England. It is possible that he could have used his mother's maiden name at some point, which was WEST, but he is more likely to have used POTTS. If, indeed, you find any POTTS or WEST of England in Luzerne (possibly in Philadelphia), I (we) would be highly interested and appreciate it! The wall seems to be going to crumble. One thing might make any search easier... Certainly none of these POTTS or WEST issue would be very old. The parents are Anna (Hannah) and Richard WEST (not the natural father). Thanks, Vince Summers

    1. Re: [PALUZERN] Obituary Lookups $$
    2. I received 4 obits from Osterhout last week for which I had the exact date of death but not exact date of obit. THe charge was $1.00/obit plus $1.00 for postage. If you don't have the exact date, perhaps someone locally will offer to look for it in the Wilkes-Barre City Directory. There are some death dates from city directories for various years on the Luzerne County web site. Perhaps you'll get lucky there. You can also try the Times Leader Newspaper Library (address below). Sometimes their librarian will look for obits when she has extra time. Val The Times Leader Newspaper Library 15 North Main St. Wikes-Barre PA 18711 phone 717-829-7220 fax 717-829-5537

    1. [PALUZERN] Re: Searching the U.K. and an explanation...
    2. I wanted to put in a recommendation for the web site Vince mentioned. The man running it is very thorough and very helpful. The only UK census that can be thoroughly searched from this web site is the 1881. This is the only census with an index. A few indices exist for previous censuses, but for limited areas. To search the 1881, it would be most helpful if you have a county (and a town), especially if yours is a very common surname. Good luck, Tracy

    1. [PALUZERN] looking for research suggestions
    2. Jamie Dougher
    3. I will be going to Ireland in the next couple weeks to do some genealogy research. I know that my ancestors came from County Mayo and arrived in Carbondale PA 6/23/1846 but I don't know where in Ireland they were from nor do I know what port they entered the States. I've already done research locally in the Scranton/ Carbondale area and I've also tried the National Archieves - both unfortunately have been of little help. I've also requested an initial record search from the North Mayo Research Center - again with little success. Does anyone have any suggestions where to start in County Mayo (what resources might be available at the North Mayo Heritage Center, strategies for locating ship records leaving Ireland, common ports of departure in 1846 for Mayo residents, common ports for entry in the USA in 1846, etc) thanks in advance Jamie Dougher Archbald, PA

    2. Hi, I've had a hard time getting on to the site even at 1:00 am but finally did get on. I tried the "Wall of Honor" site which is supposed to have my father's name on, but it comes up empty. I paid to have that done and have received a certificate. I've tried to contact the site, but got nowhere. How do I check this out? My other question is how do I get to the immigration site. I want to find out when my grandmother came to this country. It was either 1904 or 1905 and she was traveling by herself or with other women from her village. Is there a site that indicates the ships passenger list? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Marge German Rockville, MD

    1. [PALUZERN] Found Augustus M. Jones in Morris Co. NJ
    2. B. Kelly-Bly
    3. The following biography for Augustus M. Jones also pertains to Luzerne Co. Source: History Morris County New Jersey, Volume II, Lewis Publishing Co., 1914 One of the leading and highly respected citizens of Netcong, Morris county, New Jersey, is Augustus M. JONES, whose life has been characterized by honor in business transactions, loyalty in the discharge of the responsible duties which have fallen to his lot, and cordiality and kindness in social circles. George Godfrey JONES, his father, was a resident of Philadelphia, and from there removed to Luzerne county, Pennsylvania. He was a wood turner by trade, and his son, Augustus M., carted the results of his work to Philadelphia at a time when the railroad was not running within fifty miles of that section of the state. The elder JONES died at Chatham. He married Elizabeth LAFFERTY, who died in Luzerne county, Pennsylvania. They had children: 1. Augustus M., of whom further. 2. Charles S., who was a soldier in the Union army during the Civil War, and was killed at Petersburg, Virginia. 3. Alfred, was a soldier in the regular army, serving two enlistments of five years each; he was a participant in the Indian campaigns in Washington and Oregon, and while there took up two quarter sections of land at Hood’s Canal, at the port of Puget Sound, and spent the remainder of his life there. 4. Martha, married William HAVENSTRITE; died at Moscow, Pennsylvania. 5. Mary Ann, married David McWADE, both now deceased; resided at Daleville, Pennsylvania. Augustus M. JONES was born November 25, 1836. At a very early age he became an active assistant to his father. He went to the woods, felled trees, cut logs and cross-sawed them, and prepared them for use in the cabinet making business, following these occupations until the opening of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad. He removed to Chatham, Morris county, New Jersey, in 1867, holding the position of train and engine dispatcher until the Boonton branch was completed, when he went to Port Morris, and was the first train dispatcher there. At the end of one year he was advanced to the office of yard master, and filled this position efficiently until his resignation in 1895. He had a record of thirty-five years of uninterrupted service. At one time Mr. JONES was station agent at Gouldsboro, a station built for the firm of PRATT & GOULD, of which Jay GOULD was a member, and while in charge there was frequently called upon to act upon his own judgement in matters of the utmost importance and involving huge sums of money. Before entering into his connection with the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Mr. Jones had a varied business career. He was in the livery business, and later engaged in business as a wagon and carriage builder and harness maker. His fraternal affiliations are as follows: Madison Lodge, No. 93, F. and A. M.; a charter member of the Musconetcong Lodge, No. 151. In political matters he has always been a strong Republican, casting his first vote for Abraham LINCOLN, for whom he had an intense admiration, being obliged to ride eighty-five miles to get to the polling place. Mr. JONES married, in 1863, Hannah, daughter of Josephine CASTERLINE, of Beaumont, Pennsylvania, and in the fall of 1871 they removed to Netcong, New Jersey. Children: 1. Edward, now of Budds Lake, Morris county, New Jersey; has a contract to carry the mail between Stanhope and Mount Olive, he married Edith DANGLER and has children: Edmund T., Percy R., Mildred F. 2. Jennie M., married Lever McDOUGAL, now deceased, and has three children: Ellroy, Mattie, Leslie. 3. Zada B., married William King, of Netcong, and has one son, Maximilian. 4. Mary E., married S. S. WILLS, and has one child, Marguerite. 5. Charles M., of Netcong, married Nellie, daughter of Henry ASTRICK, and has one son, Paul. 6. Joseph G., resides with his parents. 7. Francis W., married Hazel TREZISE, a daughter of Richard TREZISE, and has children: Rachel and Ruth. 8. Hazel E., married Leslie W. BROWE, of Newark, New Jersey, and has one daughter, Thelma.
