I looked at this website, then I looked at Dunbar Rowland's "Military History in Mississippi" and indeed I believe his death can be traced to a specific event. The reference to Baldwin in his military record did it. Baldwin MS is located between Corinth and Tupelo and that pretty much agrees with Dunbar Rowland's account of what happened to this regiment in May and June 1862. I couldn't have figured this out without your help.
