Ernest LaVerne "Shorty" Armstrong (September 24, 1930 - December 30, 2008) Funeral services for Ernest LaVerne "Shorty" Armstrong of Winona will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 1, at Oliver Chapel, with burial following in Michie Cemetery near Vaiden. Rev. J. C. Hubbard will officiate the services. Visitation will be Thursday, December 31, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m., at Oliver Funeral Home. Mr. Armstrong died of heart failure at his residence on Tuesday, December 30, 2008. He was 78 years old. Mr. Armstrong was the son of the late Samuel Ezelle Armstrong and the late Cola Morehead Armstrong. He was a retired truck driver and a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his wife, Annie R. Armstrong of Winona; two daughters, Janie Ansley and Brenda Ladner, both of Winona; four sons, Dennis Armstrong, Marty Armstrong, Mike Armstrong, and Jeff Armstrong, all of Winona; sister, Donnie Blaylock of Winona; brother, Billy Armstrong of Jackson; ten grandchildren; and twenty-one great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be John Ansley, Tim Ansley, Trent Armstrong, Mikey Vaughn, Zane Ware, and Danny Varnes, Jr. Honorary pallbearers are Chris Weaver and Charles Allen.
