The Greenwood Commonwealth Greenwood, MS October 30, 2002 Ollie Mae Philley Herring Services for Ollie Mae Philley Herring, 76, of Schlater, who died of cancer Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at Greenwood Leflore Hospital, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home. Born in Alva, Mrs. Herring had been a resident of Schlater for 68 years. She retired after 38 years of distinguished service with the U.S. Postal Service, working in the Schlater and Minter City areas. She was a member of the Schlater United Methodist Church, where she served very actively to promote the life of Christ. She was a servant of the Lord and always taught her children the purpose of devoted faith and a spirit of unbelievable strength. Her family and friends were all touched by her will to fight during the two years of her illness for the love of her husband, children and grandchildren, and all who knew her saw that. She and her husband, Benny Herring, were married for 56 years, and everyone that saw Ollie Mae saw Benny too. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Walter Philley. She is survived by her husband, Benny Herring of Schlater; two sons, Benny Edward Herring of Greenwood and James Troy Herring of Tupelo; two daughters, Sherry Herring Varon of Rochester Hills, Mich., and Betty Herring Markham of Brandon; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The Rev. F. Wilson Ray will officiate at the services. Burial will be in McNutt Cemetery in Schlater. Pallbearers will be Benjamin Herring, Bobby Rumfelt Jr., Duncan Frasier Jr. and Andy Hunt. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 this evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Schlater United Methodist Church.
