    3. Guess shooting isn't just in the present. But fast trials isn't as fast now as back then. Nov. 28, 1933 The Winona Times Winona, Ms. Slayer Given Life Six Days After Murder VAIDEN, Miss., Nov. 19--Six days after he had shot & killed Louie Gailey, 35, circuit court "rider"J.L. Duren 19, farmer, today was convicted of first degree murder. His sentence was fixed at life imprisonment & tonight he was on route to the state prison at Parchman. The jury given the case last night, returned its verdict early this morning. The state was unable to establish a definite motive for the killing although Duren claimed that when Gailey, a minor-court official, made a move to his hip pocket, he fired in self defense. Duren told the court that he asked Gailey about some "lies" he had told on a relative, but the state brought out that Gailey did not know this person. The shooting occurred last Thursday. Duren was arrested a few minutes later by Sheriff Sam Wright on the street in Vaiden, indicted Monday & his trial started Tuesday. Testimony brought out the fact that Duren had been drinking a little the day of the killing. C.E. Rhodes, who first said he saw Duren fire the last of 3 bullets into Gailey's body, during the trial denied any knowledge of the affair. He was convicted of carrying a pistol, fined $100 & given 90 days in jail.

    3. Peggy, This is a strange article. It doesn't say where the shooting occurred - surely not in court?? I think it's interesting because my father's niece (Margaret McDaniel) married into the GALEY family from Carroll County, MS. She married Harold Donald Galey. It's even more interesting because Harold Galey's mother was Anna Ruby Muirhead. "Louie" is a common name in that family, and I believe this Louie Gailey is part of this family. I have a Louis Hugh Galey, son of James M. and Fannie Shute Gailey, born May 1895 in Carroll Co., MS. The age is about right for the below victim, but I don't have a death date for him to verify this. Thanks for the new research topic!
