June 27, 1952 The Winona Times Winona, Ms. Recommended For Award of Medal Warrant Officer Hilliard E. Chesteen, Jr. son of Mr. & Mrs. H.E. Chesteen, Sr. of Kilmichael, has recently been recommended for the award of the Soldiers' Medal for heroism in Korea. The recommendation reads as follows: "Upon, notification that a marine enlisted man lay badly wounded in a mine field close to his position, Warrant Officer Hilliard E. Chesteen, Jr., rushed to the scene & without hesitation or thought for his own safety, walked about 35 yards into a known heavily mined field, rendered first aid to the wounded man & evacuated him from the mined field. after the wounded man was taken from the danger area, WOJG Chesteen then signaled to the pilot of a passing heliocopter, who immediately landed & evacuated the wounded man to the hospital. "Warrant Officer Chesteen's show of bravery & Coolheadedness in entering the mine field, knowing that the marine had been severely wounded by an exploding mine, established him as a hero in the minds of all personnel present & in his unit. Warrant Officer Chesteen's quick & efficient action prevented the wounded man from dying of shock or loss of blood at the scene of the accident. Other personnel present at the scene expressed fear & refused to enter the mined area to rescue the wounded man." Warrant Officer Chesteen was assigned to his unit on the 1st of January 1952 & has constantly been in action with the enemy since that time. He is presently serving somewhere in North Korea. Warrant Officer Chesteen is married to the former Miss Mary K. Tubb, daughter of the late Hon. & Mrs. Talmadge B. Chesteen, Jr., of Kilmichael was awarded the Silver Star by the battalion commander, Major Paul Kennison. Warrant Officer Chesteen had previously received the Soldiers Medal for Heroism in Korea for rescuing a wounded man from a mined field. The citation read as follows; "Again on 28 June 1952 Warrant Officer Chesteen distinguished himself by entering another mine field to evacuate the body of a soldier killed by an exploding mine. Whiled leading a patrol out searching the surrounding area for Communist observers & informers, one member of his patrol entered a heavily mined area & was killed by an exploding mine. Warrant Officer Chesteen, although unfamiliar with the pattern of the mine field, & without hesitation or regard for personal safety entered the mine field & removed the body."
