    3. Oliver Funeral Home Online Obituaries Winona, MS June 3, 2009 Latha Bacon Austin (February 26, 1919 - June 3, 2009) Latha Bacon Austin of Greenwood departed this life on June 3, 2009, at Graceland Assisted Living Home in Grenada, where she had resided since July of last year. Born February 26, 1919, in Carroll County, Latha was the daughter of Walter F. and Johnnie O'Neal Bacon. After graduating from J. Z. George High School in Carrollton, she was married to Manuel (Slick) Austin, who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death are siblings, James Barney (Buddy) Bacon of Winona, Allyne Holmes of Winona and Dorrence Chambley of McCarley. As a young wife, Latha moved to Greenwood where she worked for the Singer Sewing Center until retirement. An accomplished seamstress, Latha made clothing for the store manikins, for her nieces, and for numerous clients. A Latha Austin made garment was a work of art. While she never had children of her own, her nieces felt they had the benefit of a second mother in Latha because she was always on hand to make a garment or help in any way that she could or just be fun to spend time with. When there was sickness or anything that called for an extra hand, this modest lady was the first to come and often the last to leave, yet she would insist that she had done little. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greenwood where she was active in the Sis Taylor Sunday School Class. For many years, Latha and a group of friends gathered weekly for cards and conversation. Noted for her quick wit, Latha brought life and laughter to any group. Her memory will be treasured by her one surviving sister, Bertha Jacks of Grenada, her nieces Shirley Curtis of Greenwood, Mary Elizabeth Corley of McCarley, Betty Lynn Hudson of Dallas, and Georgia Ross of Wynne, Arkansas, and by a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will be from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM on Friday, June 5th, at Oliver Funeral Home in Winona. Services will immediately follow in the Oliver Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 PM led by the Reverend Glen Seefeld . Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Winona. Pallbearers are Bill Curtis, Wayne Howard, Jimmy Austin, David O'Bryan, Andy O'Bryan and Brad O'Bryan. Honorary Pallbearers are the staff and friends from Graceland Assisted Living Home. Memorials should be sent to First United Methodist Church, PO Box 1870, Greenwood, MS 38935 or Sta-Home Hospice of Grenada.
