    3. The Commercial Appeal Memphis, TN July 22, 2011 Alma Doris Palmertree Baker Sledge, MS - Alma Doris Baker, age 93, widow of W.O. Baker, died July 20, 2011 at her sister's home in Batesville, MS. Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 23 at Wells Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Clay Baker officiating. Visitation will begin at 3:30 p.m. Mrs. Baker will be buried at Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Baker was born in Panola County, MS on August 28, 1917 to Jesse Alma Buchanan and Jeff Berlin Palmertree. After working as a telephone operator during World War II, Mrs. Baker married and moved from the Mt. Olivet community in Batesville, MS to Sledge, MS, where she became a member of the Sledge Methodist Church. She dedicated her life to the church and in 1963 was awarded special membership in the Woman's Society of Christian Service by the Board of Missions of the Methodist Church. For her work with the USO, Mrs. Baker was invited to the Capitol, Washington, D.C., by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, to attend the reception honoring the Ambassadors of the USOs Abroad on the USO's 30th Anniversary. After a photo of her won a Mid-South Photography competition, the picture was selected by one of the judges to be used as a teaching aid on his nationwide teaching tours as a photo having all the elements of the "Perfect Picture". Mrs. Baker also worked as a substitute teacher. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ellen Baker of Sledge, MS; son, H.E. Baker of Fulton, MS; 2 sisters, Donna Traywick of Batesville, MS and Ruby Williams of Sledge, MS. Wells Funeral Home

    3. Thanks Ken for posting this info. I tried to get a hold of Donna Traywick last year about this time and wasn't able to reach her. At least now I know that she was still with us in July.
