May 7, 1981 The Winona Times Winona, Ms. Laney death sentence only second in County history The death penalty imposed upon Wadell Laney by the jury last Thursday, is the second such penalty in the History of Montgomery County. Laney was convicted in the shooting death of Deputy Sheriff Charles Busby Smith, Jan. 12 & was sentenced to death. Records in the courthouse & the memories of those who have been around for a long time, indicate the only preions death penalty ever imposesd was on Wilson Pullen. Pullen was convicted of the murder of Dave McClelland on Oct. 17, 1935. He was condemned to death on the gallows & the sentence was carried out in the jail yard in Winona in the early morning hours of June 19, 1936.
Both Pullen & McClelland are buried at Hebron. I wonder why Pullen murdered him. I have a long article from The Winona Times of the hanging and what happened that day and of his survivors but no mention of why he did it, just that Dave McClelland was Pullens landlord. Dave McClellan was my Great-grandfather. In 1935 a law was passed requiring all persons growing cotton to register for a 'cotton allotment'. Dave McClellan refused to register, saying the government wasn't going to tell him how much cotton he could grow each year. Since he did not have an allotment ticket he was not able to get his cotton ginned. This meant that Wilson Pullen also could not get his 'share' ginned and sold as it was all planted in McClellan's name. The argument grew between the two men resulting in the killing. This is the version of the story I grew up with and was confirmed by the court records and the appeal to the state supreme court.
