    1. [PTREE] VARNER HOME AGAIN VISITED BY OFFICERS
    2. Ken Jackson
    3. Courtesy of Peggy: Feb. 26, 1932 The Winona Times Winona, MS VARNER HOME AGAIN VISITED BY OFFICERS Sheriff R.M. Smith, accompanied by Deputy Tom Thompson and Marshall Joe Glenn, paid another unexpected visit to the Varner home, south of Winona, Sunday night. The officers entered the home and upon making a search found sufficient intoxicating beverage to make an arrest. It will be remembered that Mrs. (Ma) Varner was arrested by the same officers some 2 weeks ago and upon standing trial was fined $100.00 and costs and given 60 days in jail. The jail sentence was suspended, however, pending her good behavior. It was understood that she would have to serve the sentence automatically without further trial if caught in disobedience of the law again. Possibly this fact was uppermost in her mind when the officers surprised her Sunday night. The officers report that everyone in the home was as docile lambs upon discovering that the law had again invaded the erstwhile, placid waters of good-fellowship. Probably this atmosphere would have prevailed had not Ma Varner developed an acute desire to quench her rapidly developed thirst. So great was the thirst that she requested that Sheriff Smith allow her to go to the back porch and secure water. Being the gentleman that he is, the sheriff could not refuse to grant so simple a request. He assigned Marshall Glenn to accompany the lady to that place where liquid refreshments could be had in the milder form. Upon arriving on the back porch and satisfying her craving for refreshments by drinking deeply and fully of the Nectar of the Gods, Ma made an additional request upon the officer who chaperoned her. Being the gentleman he is, he acquiesced. Upon being satisfied that his prisoner was, at least temporarily, beyond the point of attempting an escape and being the gentleman that he is, he turned his attention to searching for more of the intoxicating beverage that has been responsible for the major part of the trouble at the homestead. Only momentarily was his prisoner out of his vision, but the time was sufficient, the occasion propitious and the inclination urgent. Yes, the prisoner, propelled by the strongest sense of self-preservation and the very slightest desire to spend any time as the guest of the county, departed to parts unknown. She was enveloped by the shades of night before the officers was hardly aware of the fact that the spot she had occupied had become vacant. Aided by a dense wooded section adjacent to the homestead, she made her escape good. Diligent search by the officers failed to reveal her whereabouts. She has not been located yet and it is safe to assume that she has departed from the county for a protracted visit.

    3. I suppose I included those newspaper articles from 1932 that Peggy had found about her and the law. If not, let me know and I'll post them. I guess it wasn't unusual back in the day for grandmothers to supplement their income by making 'shine. I think grandfathers just made it to drink - ha. 3. Thanks Peggy, Yes Tiger and all his people will be there, he will be expected to win now that he is healthy again... I would be out there I will be watching it on TV like you.... I have a business man here in the little town where I live who buys my badges for a good price so I just stay home where its nice and comfortable and watch on TV...and spend his money..... I like Freddie Couples, he almost won last year, he is older golfer in his middle 40's and has only won once, Tiger has won 4 times so I will not be rooting for him..... ----- Original Message ----- From: "peggy palmertree" <psmpalmertree@bellsouth.net> To: <PALMERTREE@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 02, 2009 10:59 AM Subject: [PTREE] rain > > > So far this morn, it isn't raining, but we are to get some bad severe > weather starting around 12 more or less, until maybe 7 pm. for the state. > So you know it's coming that way. 3. Peggy, when it rains and there is any lightning they stop play and get everyone off the course, too bad if you spent a couple thousand to get a ticket for the event,, that for the safety of the players and fans... usually only happens once in a while,, they play if its just raining a little but not if the lightning starts striking.... We got woke up early this morning with thunder and lightning and lots of rain, you can always tell when you will get lots of rain, because the weather guy said last night we would be lucky to see a light shower during the night, all the heavy stuff would be well to our south, ha ha sure, I guess I was dreaming at 4 am when the thunder and lightning and storms hit......been raining all morning and this afternoon is suppose to be real bad thunderstorms, guess the sun will be shinning by then.... hope all is well in your neck of the woods,, anyone open a fish house in PC??? 3. I think I remeber her living in a small house on the road that went by the Braswell's house. It was on the right side on the side of a small hill, on the way to Pine Bluff church. Maybe it was some one else. Then I remember someone living past my grandparents house , Lige and Josie Tompkins, but that has been a long time ago. That would have been in the Poplar Springs Community. Don't hear it called that anymore. 3. I believe I heard we were to have some bad weather tomorrow & then it would be moving east, & then a little rain Sun or Mon. So you may be getting some. Maybe not too bad. Don't wish to hard for it may cut off for sure & be dry for several months. Maybe that is what happen last year. Let it rain at night instead of in the day light. Let those golfer learn to roll those balls on top of the water, or split water so the ball can roll on dry ground. I'm being bad, AIN'T I. Sure tell I don't like golf.
