    3. Ken, You may have missed my first posting on the American Idol, so I'll try to send it again... In the below it should be Wood and not Woods... O.D. ====================================== Hi Gang, Thank's to Peggy for reminding the list that I am still arround. Thing's have been slow on my hill lately and I have been trying to get enough strength back to work in our yard. It now take's me longer just thinking about what I want to do than it takes to do it. But to let all of you know how small our world really is I'll tell you about where we ate out last night or I should say tonight. Francine and I met my nephew "David McElroy" and his wife and daughter at Nail's Place in Stewart. The place was packed and Peggy's brother-in-law W.W. Steen was there to join us at our table and then one of my classmates from Kilmichael came in and joined us. Well as we were eating someone stopped by and told us that the grandparent's of American Idol Kris Allen was at the table over in the corner, so I had to go and check that out. Before I got to the table I saw that another classmate of mine and a very good friend, Charles Woods, was at the table. After our initial handshake and hug's I ask him who the grandparents of Kris was and he said that Kris was his grandson. I knew that Charles had lived in Arkansas after he retired from the Air Force but didn't know that Kris was his grand son. We had a very good time as we just kept going from table to table and telling old High School stories. He even said that I hung arround Kilmichel long enough to get a very young and beautiful girl, Francine, HA!!!... One of Charle's sister's and a brother was also with him. He just said to watch the program Tuesday night and VOTE-VOTE-VOTE for Kris... 3. Don, My friend was Charles Wood, no "S" .. I think that I added the "S" when I first posted his name. Jackie always says that that family is only "one stick" and that his bunch is more than one stick so the "S" is added... HA!!! Francine was pulling for Adam Lambert just to be different from me... 3. Don't be telling me about Vaiden's courthouse!! Have you forgot they do have a new one, but I haven't been in it. Yes, I go down in the Chancery Clerks basement in Kosy. It takes me a few min. to get down there & even more to come back up. I'm really breathing hard when I get back to the main floor. I really need to do those stairs everyday, or when I do go, do the stairs about 5 times. Afraid if I didn't make it, no one would hear me or come looking for me. In some of those old storage room, they could hide someone & never find them afterward. Last year when I found in the paper about Lillian Stafford, I went in the Circuit Clerk in Winona, & was told those old files were at the library in a room down below. I sure would had to see that room. If I decide to go down into some of those rooms, I think I'm going to take some spray also. > Peggy, > > Sounds good. 1. [PTREE] Court houses
    2. Ken Jackson
    3. Jeannine, I never really put any thought into this, but now that I think about it all the old Southern courthouses I've been DO have the courtroom on the second floor. It makes sense about the hot weather open-window thing. And the "escape theory" makes sense, too. If you've ever been to an old country church back in the 50s - 60s or so you well remember they had no air-conditioning. Most didn't have electricity, either. You'd be lucky if you had a funeral home hand fan to bring to fan yourself with. The windows were all up and the entrance door was open, too. I can only imagine what it must have been like attending a Sunday service in the middle of July in Montgomery County back then. You were expected to wear your "Sunday Best". And from the looks of all the layers of clothing that the women wore, plus the corsets, bustles, etc. Don't you know they were burning up??? And the men weren't much better off with those serge suits, stiff shirts with studs and stiff shirt collars. Not to mention the union suits! I don't think I could have sat through 5 minutes of a sermon back then dressed like that. Heck it was torture sitting in the church on regular Sundays back in the 50s and 60s... Yes, air-conditioning sure has spoiled us Southerners, hasn't it?? Ken -----Original Message----- I wouldn't be surprised if the shooting didn't happen in court. I asked my husband about it and he said that the reason courtrooms are on the second floor of the courthouses is because when most of them were built the windows and doors had to be kept open in the warm months to keep things cooler. They didn't want to make it easy for the accused to flee by jumping out a window, the second floor courtoom made them think about it twice.

    3. I wonder if our Martina P. Mayfield was in attendance at this Red Hat Fling? Ken ------------------------------------------------------------------ The Star-Herald Kosciusko, MS May 20, 2009 Red hats galore: Sixth annual Red Hat Fling brings members from all over to Kosciusko By Nancy Green "Gaudy is good, tacky is better." This motto best describes the 275 women wearing purple dresses and red hats who descended on Kosciusko last Saturday for the sixth annual Red Hat Fling. Red Hat chapters from Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi registered for the day-long event held at the Oprah Winfrey Boys and Girls Club. The Kosciusko Red Hattitudes hosted the fling with Queen Mom Jewette Battles serving as emcee for the program in the gymnasium of the club. Following the noon meal, prizes were awarded to winners in the Glamma, Poster, and Centerpiece Contests. Each chapter provided a centerpiece for their table carrying out a theme. Posters depicted the various chapters. A grand prize of $300 was awarded along with a number of other prizes. Entertainment was provided by The Boomers of Southaven who dressed in the 1950s style and sang songs of the same era. Toni Borst, a resident of the Jackson area, sang a medley of songs in memory of Red Hat members who have died during the past year.
