Peggy, you sure come up with some interesting information! Ken followed up with the comment that James Allen Holmes was the son of George Washington HOLMES and Amelia J. WALKER. I don't recall an Amelia J. in any of my Walker files. Have you ever come across her before?
I looked & I didn't have an Amelia. James M. was the son of Landon Columbus Walker. I only have James & 3 other sons, no daughters. I was told James had fought here in Miss. during the Civil War & thought it was a beautiful state, so when the war was over he moved his family to Miss. Peggy
I haven't looked but don't remember the name. If I should find out, I'll let you know. I really don't think she in our Walker line. I do know they were from NC. or SC. Jan, I think you need to move down & we could go looking the those old papers. I've wanted to find out about Judge Walker making "shine" & taking it too the Federal men in Kosciusko, but haven't yet. If I should, you may hear me give out a yell & the courthouse may shake. Need to go down in that hole at Kosc. Everytime I hear something I start looking around. If a rat did run over my feet, I bet those clerks wouldn't hear me. And they wouldn't come down to check on me. Janice and Peggy, If it helps, according to census information, Amelia was from Tennessee and her mother, Harriett, was from Virginia or Kentucky. Her father had died before the 1850 census so I came to a dead stop trying to find out his name. Ken -----Original Message----- Peggy, you sure come up with some interesting information! Some may think this isn't important or family history, but I enjoy finding stuff like this since there isn't any thing going on - on the line. But who knows, someone may know someone in this "history class". So when I send something like this, if you don't want to read it--DELETE it. Peggy
Peggy, Thanks for sending this news item. I did some research on the submarine and found a nice history of the USS Albacore, including a photo of it and also a description of its demise, recorded by a Japanese patrol boat, the Fukuei Maru nr.7. http://www.uboat.net/allies/warships/ship/2964.html Ken Jan. 18, 1946 The Winona Times Winona, Ms. Death Reported Gordon H. Fullilove, Jr. Mr. & Mrs. Gordon H. Fullilove, Sr. have been notified by the Navy Deptment of the death of their son Gordon H. Fullilove, Jr., S 1/c. The submarine, Albacore, of which he was a crew member, doing patrol duty some where Northeast of Honshu Island, was last in action. It left Pearl Harbor October 24, 1944, & refueled at Midway Island October 28, 1944 & no word has been recieved from it since. Mr. & Mrs. Fullilove was notified Dec. 20, 1944, that their son was missing in action. He enlisted in the Navy July 3rd, 1943. He is survived by his parents, 3 sisters, Mrs. Edmon Chesteen, Miss Irene Fullilove, Mrs. LaNelle Page; 1 brother, Billy. Also his grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Ira Flippen of McCarley, Miss.
Cuz, Thanks for sending this obituary. I have been having fun trying to find out who he was, since I have never heard of him, and wanted to know if or how he was related to the HOLMES we know. He was the son of George Washington HOLMES and Amelia J. WALKER. James was married to Anna E. FAIR (daughter of Richard FAIR and Delina BOYD), who died in 1938 and is buried at French Camp Cemetery. Their children were Estelle, Mary Bell ( who married S. J. Curtis), Samuel E., Hugh Fair Holmes, John James, Robert Love Holmes, Lester Thomas, Oliver Wendell (who married Susan Leola Biggers), and Eva M. Thanks for the interesting obituary. I come to work at 7:30 but I am early this morning cause we are leaving to go to Salesville AR fishing for the weekend. Probably me and Kelly and both the parents if it is dry enough for Sidney to motor in his powerchair. Jason will probably have to work. I hope that everyone will feel well enough to come for most of the day Saturday.
