Donald E Hoedown '09 - Hayden's Place - June 20 & 21 Hey Everybody. I hope you all have had a wonderful year. Hoedown time is getting close now. I hope everybody has their calendars marked and are getting in a party mood. June 20 and 21 will be here before you know it. All the musicians from last year plan to be there again this time. I'm not sure how many, if any of Toad's group will make it. Sure hope they come. I have around 70 so far saying they will attend and still haven't heard from lots of folks. You know who you are, so let me hear from you. It really helps to have some sort of ball park figure to go on when buying the fish. Help me here! This year it will be fish only, no ribs provided unless there's a volunteer to do the cooking. I'll reimburse the cost. Thanks again to everybody who helped make the past Hoedowns such a success. More of that good down home potluck will be appreciated. MMM-MMM Good! Please remember to bring chairs, paper plates, cutlery or just anything you want to. Ice is always good too. I heard today that O.D. McElroy is back in the hospital with pneumonia. Sure hope he's up and about and able to join us again. Hayden & Nancy are flying to Calif. on June 13 and driving out with me in my motor home, leaving here the 14th. I'll have help driving this time! Nancy has never seen all the country between here and there. Don't forget your camera Nancy! Let us know if you have any announcements to make, birthdays, new births, anniversaries or community events. Any questions or if you need directions, please e-mail, write or call. Here's hoping for good weather and a good turn out and a good time for all. See you soon..... When I lived in Drew back in the 50s, I used to date boys from Ruleville. We had a bit of excitement back then -- there was a gas pipeline being laid and it ran through Drew and Ruleville .... all down the state I think. One night about 3 a.m., I woke up smelling gas. It was summertime and the windows were open. I got up and went outside and looked around and all my neighbors were out looking, too. It was a bit overpowering. Later, one of the boys I knew told me that he and some other boys had been driving around near the construction site where the pipeline people kept their equipment and they just happened to see a stray container of the stuff that is added to gas to make it smell like gas. (I worked for Mobil Gas LP division later in life and learned the name of this stuff is "stinkum"....and it only takes a tiny bit added to lots of gallons of gas to give it an odor - which gas doesn't have on its own). Anyway, they put the container on the back of the truck and rode around African American town letting it pour out on the street and when they finished there, they went somewhere else. "Saw lawyer Everett out in his night shirt looking for a gas leak" ... they thought it was funny. Scared the xxxx out of everybody else. Life did get interesting in Drew and Ruleville, even then. The boy who told me about it (it was his truck) called me a few years later when he passed through Memphis. He was in the Navy and was in the Shore Patrol. ----- Original Message ----- From: "peggy palmertree" <psmpalmertree@bellsouth.net> To: <palmertree@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 26, 2009 9:10 AM Subject: Re: [PTREE] Ruleville,MS?? > > Lois & Elbo hasn't said anything about it, but that don't mean something > didn't happen. I know where it is..... it is 6 miles south of Drew, where I grew up. Ruleville is on Highway 49 but there is another highway (running east and west) and you turn there to go to Cleveland which was a much larger town back in the day. Cleveland was west....Minter City was east. I used to live next door to a girl whose older sister was a preacher at a Holiness Church in Boogher Den, near Minter City. The last time I was down that way was 1962 when my uncle (who lived in Ruleville) died. We had just moved to GA and took every legitimate opportunity to take off from work and go back to Memphis -- which is where we stayed when we went to the funeral. ----- Original Message ----- From: "peggy palmertree" <psmpalmertree@bellsouth.net> To: <palmertree@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 26, 2009 9:16 AM Subject: Re: [PTREE] Ruleville,MS?? > > Oh, I re-read you email. Hi Nova, If I am not mistaken Ruleville is down in the Delta not far from Greenwood...Its on Hwy 8 that runs from Cleveland to Grenada.. It was probably just some of those Ms. Boys and Girls down on the farm blowing off a little steam..... Lois & Elbo hasn't said anything about it, but that don't mean something didn't happen. In those small Delta towns, any thing could happen at any time. Gang, This might be of interest to you North Carolina researchers, so I thought I'd pass it on to you. Ken URL: http://statelibrary.ncdcr.gov/dimp/digital/ncfamilyrecords/ The State Library of North Carolina and the North Carolina State Archives are proud to present their newest digital collection, North Carolina Family Records Online. The joint digital collection currently contains nearly 220 family Bible records (lists of birth, marriage, and death information typically written inside of North Carolina family Bibles) from the State Archives, and the six-volume Marriage and Death Notices from Raleigh Register and North Carolina State Gazette: 1799-1893, an 1,100-page compendium of marriage announcements and obituaries compiled by then State Librarian Carrie L. Braughton. This exciting online collection was unveiled at the National Genealogical Society Conference, held at the Raleigh Convention Center from May 13-16. North Carolina Family Records Online has a narrow scope at present, containing only a tenth of the over 2,000 Bible records owned by the North Carolina State Archives, but it is hoped that the online collection will continue to grow. All of the Bible records selected for digitization contain family history information dating from the 1700s or earlier and span over 150 years, with the majority of the materials dating to between roughly 1750 and 1900. Each record has been scanned, transcribed by Archives and Library staff, and is available for free on the web. And, because the mostly handwritten materials have been transcribed, the entire collection is full-text searchable, enabling users to search by name, location, or other subject words and phrases. Due to the content and period of time covered in the North Carolina Family Records Online collection, it reflects only a small segment of North Carolina?s diverse population ? namely literate, Protestant Caucasians of the 18th and 19th Centuries. However, 25 Bible records contain documentation about the birth of slaves, and many other records contain information about governors, legislators, and other political and military leaders who helped shape this country. The State Archives continues to collect Family Bible Records that begin before 1913 from all of North Carolina?s citizens, with the hopes providing a broader understanding of North Carolina?s past. Some of the Applewhites moved to Arkansas and then on to Oregon after the war. I am in touch with one descendant and he has said that the illegal activities in the woods in that area have made it very dangerous to hike or enjoy the scenery because of the pitbulls or other vicious breeds that are being used to guard the labs.

Peggy, There is a story about Joe's Dad Hornback and brother during the depression in the knob hills around New Haven, Ky. The revenuers showed up, they both took off running as fast as they could, Joe's feisty little dad got away by jumping into the river and got away that way. His brother ran into a tree, knocking himself out cold and they got him. I think he was "away" a short time. Now people say it is dangerous even to go hunting or fishing where you are not sure about, because of the pot fields hidden. They guard them and it is dangerous. There was even a rumor of my Granny Mary Ann making shine after my Grandfather Tom P'tree got really sick before he died. She had a full household to support, when a cousin whispered this to me just a few years ago, I said "Good for her, she got busy doing what she had to do, to support her children and other family children that were orphans from the typhoid epidemic. This cousin was one of the orphans and she was old enough at the time to remember a lot of things. Good family source for me. I remember one story where they said Granny kept a bottle on the mantel for Grandpa's congested heart disease, Brother Neal the preacher & his wife were coming over and someone suggested moving the bottle and Granny Mary Ann supposdedly said "Just leave it right where it is, if he wants a drink he can have one, if not, then he can leave it alone." When I get time, I want to research Brother Brannum (sp?) Neal. They were all such close friends, I've wondered if they came up from NE Texas with the family, so many came up about that time. Or if the friendship was from him helping them get through those seven typhoid deaths right after moving to Garvin CT. Having lots of doctor visits for Mom with the Wound Care Center. She has a spot on her ankle that won't heal, but I'll be ready to be her roommate out there when this is all over, wearing me out. Just bring me my food (pretty good food too) and books and a radio and I'll be fine at least for a couple of weeks until I get rested up. Joe threatens to put me out there, he doesn't know that right now, it sounds like a promise instead of a threat. Ha Must go, service is going up and down. I live out here in no man's land where signals are weak. It's really good talking to you today. Cooking for a family dinner with the two kids and families who live here, later today, may get in a game of stadium toss, bean bag toss or you know what I call it. (KY Version) ha Later Nova . **************An Excellent Credit Score is 750. See Yours in Just 2 Easy Steps! They were not still there, but the cans, propane tank, hoses, etc were littered all over the ground. I decided that I had 'seen' enough for one day and lit a blue streak out of the woods! I was talking about it to one of my friends at the University and he said that they now teach in Forestry School what to do if you come up on one...and how to be non-threatening and back away if there are people there. It's scary! Loved your story about the preacher...that's what puts the flesh on the bones of our research. Jeannine > > > > > . > **************An Excellent Credit Score is 750. Thanks Ken. I have not installed my program and files on this computer. I just have them on the one at the office. I believe that our line came here after the war from SC.
I don't have to move to get in on a road trip, do I? LOL It seems that there has been mention of Judge's antics, but wouldn't it have been in Leflore Co. (isn't that where he lived?) rather than Montgomery Co.? > I haven't looked but don't remember the name. If I should find out, I'll > let you know. I really don't think she in our Walker line. That would have been an interesting photo, those old barrels with axe marks and bullet holes etc. Do you think all that stuff is still there? Nova I do enjoy the old news you find, and then 'listening' to others join in the discussion. . **************An Excellent Credit Score is 750. See Yours in Just 2 Easy Steps! Nova, Mine & Basil's walk was about 40 year ago, but who knows how long those barrels had been there. The still was up & running in the horse & wagon days. Maybe in the late 40 or early 50. I don't think the Federal courts were held around here. Either in Oxford or Meridian. There goes my nosing around looking for the files in Winona. Wish some of the older cases was put on comp.
I don't believe it would be, since our walk, it's been about 40 years ago & back last summer the guy who own the place had all the timber cut. I would almost be scared to walk back in those woods now. Bet those snakes are about the size of my legs. And they are big. That was the only time I've seen a still or at least what one may look like. There was several barrels laying away. This happen around 1932-33. He stay on the run for a few years. He lived between our house & Duck's, & the still is a little back in the woods. I want to think the still is on the Walker place. Back in the early 70's Basil & I was walking around looking for a Christmas tree & we were just walking & came up on the old barrels & you could see where the axes had been used, and bullet holes.Of course they were beginning to rust. I don't know when Judge moved to Leflore County . But they were living there when we married, right in the middle of Bugger Den. Peggy > I don't have to move to get in on a road trip, do I?
