I bet that will get Peggy's attention! Peggy called me late today. She still can not send or receive emails although she has read our msg the last couple of days by going into the P'tree Msg Archives. She said someone may be coming this weekend that can help with her computer. I hope so. I really miss all her interesting news items from the newspapers. She said she and Basil were both fine. I know how frustrating having computer problems can be. She said tell everyone hello and said if anyone is not busy, come on over and help her shell purple hull peas or do I have that backwards? for all I know, it could be hull purple shell peas? It was really good to talk to her. Again about Memphis Beat with Jason Lee, Ed, I noticed a blurb about it on my AOL news and followed up on it and people were complaining about 2-3 things about it. They were saying Jason is way too skinny this time, plus some change up in partners? and like Dorothy wondered why it was being filmed in New Orleans instead of Memphis. That last one about where it is filmed probably has to do with money. I liked the little guy who played his partner, oh yes, D.J. Qualls as Davey Sutton. he has a nose like they used to talk about Bob Hope, a ski run or something like that. He is a funny guy. Alfre Woodard as his boss Lt. Tanya Rice a little more straight laced that Jason Lee as Detective Dwight Hendricks. She is good. I love the actress playing Jason Lee's mother. it listed her as Celia Weston didn't list the character's name. and I had completely forgotten that George Clooney was one of the six executive producers. Anyway others are Sam Hennings as Charlie "Whitehead" White and a couple of other regulars. Hope they haven't changed it up to much this year, people sure have been discussing the changes and not liking them saying when you have a good show like it was last season, don't mess with it. Because I have always loved to sew and make clothes at least until I gained weight, I always try to catch some of Project Runway. Some of those girls and guys are really creative and can whip a beautiful dress or suit or pants suit in no time and it really looks nice and I can't believe how others can whip up such nonsense or tacky things. That is how my Mom cut and sewed lots of things over the years, she would cut her own pattern and make really pretty clothes for all of us. It was a real shame when she lost her sight where she could not do that, she spent a lot of happy hours sewing all kinds of stuff, even dressing dolls for the Norman Christmas Store. Joe and I have a beautiful new little great granddaughter. Little Miss Collins Sophia Hornback. The only thing wrong with her is, she lives with her parents in San Diego. But they are great about sending photos out often. But that's not like hugging and kissing her in person. I have been wondering about something. Have all the older Palmertree photos been shared? If anyone has any that haven been put in the Archives photo file, I would certainly appreciate you sharing them with us. Later Nova In a message dated 6/23/2011 2:07:20 P.M. I is showering around here right now and that is really a welcome sight..... Hope everyone finds some way to beat the heat, I played golf for the first time in a month its just been so hot, I did not want to get outside unless it was necessary..... I missed the hoedown too, and did not get to my high school reunion this year... hopefully next time... Is that what you call it in MS or something else, when I looked up the recipe? online there were several names. Anyone else have a great recipe you could let us know about? My next trip is to a nephew's wedding in Bend, Oregon. That should be fun. Peggy, are you back online? I thought we would have heard from you, you should have several news bits for us by now. Just talked to Donnie G. this morning. He still doesn't have his computer online yet. They are still working on his house. He and his brother both had dr. appts today. Well, Joe and I have had none of the damage you might have heard on the news about OK wind or tornadoes. Weather comes through here in strips, but all from the SW. The day, I think it was the 14th there was so much damage and they show some of it on Utube etc, I went into the storm shelter and Joe sat outside of it and watched things but we didn't even have leaves blown off trees. So Thankful. I have chicken cooking to make chic and dumplings. I make the easy delicious Bisquick ones. None of that long rolling and cutting thin strips of dough for the dumplings Mom made, they were delicious but if we like the easy bisquick kind, that's what I am going to make. A cousin sent me Paula Deen's recipe for Lemon Blossom mini cupcakes. it makes 5 doz. I had bought pans and never used them so this was a great first use. I took a basket to the research library to share with the other volunteers. I don't like paper on cupcakes so will not make more than two pans which is still 48 mini muffins and made Joe a few reg. size ones. With out the papers I would have had to wash those mini pans between each use and can't see that happening!! They have a lemon glaze over them and are delicious. Well, not knowing if anyone is getting this, I will close and see if I hear from anyone. They repeated last week's show first then had the new one on after last weeks. I like that show as well. I didn't know it was filmed in New Orleans. I am a huge "The Closer" fan and that is the way TNT has always shown them. Dorothy, I sometimes forget and call it Memphis Blues, glad you know what I am talking about. As I said I missed the first two episodes this time around but looked them up and will get to see them at diff times. The first time I came to Miss. my sister Beverly and I stayed all night in Memphis on the way back and had ribs in one of the blues clubs there, I think close to the river. I think it was owned by a blonde headed woman that played the horn. By the time we finished our meal, it was getting a little dark in several ways, and the guitar was playing his guitar at Beverly, who didn't realize why he was pointing his guitar at her and thought he was just being funny!! We left and was walking to our car, when I saw a police car cruising and I waved him down and asked the two policemen "If your mother was in Memphis and didn't want to go back to her hotel this early, where would you send her?" They laughed and told us how to get to the Beale Street area, this was in 1976 or 77 I think. They were still advertising the new street lights as making that section look like daylight. And we found the spot the policemen told us about. A fifties rock and roll place. The waiters would hop up and dance sometimes and it was a fun place to end our evening. We had gone to MS for a reunion.I don't remember any names from that day, but suppose it was some of Travis' dad's folks? My older sister Mary's husband was stationed at Fort Sill, she was working in a snack bar and met Travis P'tree He came over to visit Mom and Dad a few times and I guess he is still in the area over there, it is about an hour and a half from here. He had told my sister that there was a P'tree reunion soon and so we called his dad and got the directions etc and we came to that reunion. I didn't learn much about family history that day but it was certainly fun to meet so many P'trees. After the reunion Travis' dad took us by Basil and Peggy's house. They took us for a ride around and we were amazed at all the P'trees who lived in the area and by several cemeteries with more and more P'trees I still have photos we took that day. The night before Travis' dad and mom Christine,( Beverly and I just loved her). led us down to his brother's house and we met them. Everyone was so nice to these strange P'trees from OK. I always wanted to bring my dad Paul down there, but just didn't get around to it soon enough. We need to all keep that in mind, make sure we do those things like that NOW, we may not have tomorrow. Anyway, that was my first trip to MS. but not my last. Later Nova In a message dated 6/23/2011 7:26:41 A.M. Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: I like watching Memphis Beat, too. Joe, our daughter Lisa and I made a fast trip to KY and back this weekend for a 50 anni. party, it started raining on us before we got there and rained off and on the whole weekend. KY already looked green everywhere. They must have had lots of rain already. Was Ken at the last Hoedown? I haven't heard much about it. Donnie G said he wasn't able to help with it much and since they were just about to leave for dr's appt we didn't talk long. Later, Nova In a message dated 6/22/2011 4:54:00 P.M. Jeannine, I think that saying about be sure to wear clean underwear was said to Joe and his siblings also. I remember him talking about that once. He is already in bed or I would ask him. Probably so it wouldn't embarrass his mom. ha I remember my Mom telling a story about how she told me she didn't want to hear that the teacher told me to not talk too much in class when I was about in 1st grade and I told the teacher the next day that my Mom didn't want to hear that she said that to me again. The teacher told Mom she knew exactly how that Mom had meant it and had secretly laughed all day about it. I still can hear my mother in law Geraldine saying to her kids "The road to He** is paved with good intentions." I had never heard that until I heard her saying it. I think I will say that to Joe the next time he forgets something, like something he forgot today. He'll say "Well, I sure meant to get it, but just forgot." Does anyone else like Memphis Blues the TV show on TNT? Jason Lee, I love to hear him sing those Elvis songs. and his mother's southern accent, she loves Elvis & rock & roll too. I missed the first couple of episodes this summer I think, but will catch it in reruns, TNT does do lots of reruns. Guess I need to call Peggy tomorrow to see what is up or down with her. Take care. Glad to see some activity. I can relate to the "no rain" since January. I have seen it rain a few times since the first of the year but nothing now since April -- it rains in other areas but not here where I am. Have wondered when Peggy was going to have her computer fixed and if Ken was still doing o.k. Good to hear from you. Again, sorry about Rick last year, all we can do is remember the happy memories. I love that song, "I Hear Voices" I still hear the things my mom, dad, grandparents, nephew said. Dad always wanted places we visited and picniced at, cleaned up better than when we got there. So I hear his voice every time I'm at a park etc even if it is a roadside stop on a trip. I love that, I suppose I am way to sentimental but have been like that way to long to change. My Mom had a saying she always said to her four girls as we left the house, "Now act pretty." She meant behave and be polite etc but we would laugh about that. But it fits so well, I sure wouldn't want to act ugly like I see so many people doing these days. So all you guys and girls "Act Pretty" and have a good rest of the day. Donna Kay, Good to hear from you. Ken are you reading these? Let's hear from you!! Are there any birdwatchers out there? Joe and I love sitting on our front porch early morning and late evenings and watch all the birds. A couple of nesting Mockingbirds about ran all the other birds away for good. It went on for about two weeks and I was so mad at them for attacking all the other birds including the crows. I just wanted one of those crows to turn and fight them but Joe said the crows could not maneuver in the air like the Mockingbirds. We've had several American Painted Buntings young to old plus just one day at dusk, we were so excited when one of the adult painted buntings flew in to feed, there was an Indigo Bunting with him but that is the only time we have seen that beautiful deep solid blue bird. Indigo is the perfect description of the color. There is a big ol' scruffy looking male painted bunting that comes and sits on the side of the feeder to eat. I know if I could see his face he would look grumpy. We don't have the kind of camera we need to take closeup pics of them. Talk later, Nova In a message dated 6/22/2011 11:56:07 A.M.
