We really need it too, everything is brown.. with some trees dying.....grass is gone.... I had heard Okla. was having some fires. I know it would be bad to lose your home & everything in it. Send me some of that cool weather. We only got a few drops of rain, so far. Valerie said they were getting a lot in Southaven. Jackson got 3-5 inches. It is a little cooler but not like I like it. Hope everyone gets a little of Lee. Take care. Dave McClellan was my Great-grandfather. In 1935 a law was passed requiring all persons growing cotton to register for a 'cotton allotment'. Dave McClellan refused to register, saying the government wasn't going to tell him how much cotton he could grow each year. Since he did not have an allotment ticket he was not able to get his cotton ginned. This meant that Wilson Pullen also could not get his 'share' ginned and sold as it was all planted in McClellan's name. The argument grew between the two men resulting in the killing. This is the version of the story I grew up with and was confirmed by the court records and the appeal to the state supreme court. I have a long article from The Winona Times of the hanging and what happened that day and of his survivors but no mention of why he did it, just that Dave McClelland was Pullens landlord.
