    3. But now you need to get the whole story.  Who really done the killing, why, & if he had to serve any time. ________________________________ From: Ken Jackson <[email protected]> To: Palmertree Mailing List <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, November 21, 2011 10:05 PM Subject: [PTREE] Palmeretree Mystery Solved Gang, Well, with a little more research, I have found the answer to our "mysterious" Palmertree murder article. The Batesville Blade was a weekly newspaper published at Batesville, Mississippi from 1876 - 1885 by H. W. Thatten. It ceased with the May 29, 1885 issue. Microfilm of the paper can be found from 1880 - 1885 at (1) First Regional Library, Hernando, Desoto County, MS; and (2) Mississippi Department of Archives and History, Jackson, Hinds Co., MS. The article was also published March 13 & 14, 1879 in "the Southern States News" in The Times-Picayune, New Orleans, LA and on  March 19, 1879 in The Cincinnati  Ohio Daily Gazette. I guess it was published in those papers as an article of interest with no ties to Illinois, Ohio or Louisiana. So therefore, it had to be a descendant of Wiley Palmertree, or himself, since he had relocated to Panola County, MS prior to 1880 and died before the 1880 Federal Census, or at least he wasn't enumerated in that one. I was quoting the date from memory when I first posted that article. Sorry, the murder wasn't 1885 as I claimed, but actually 1879. Well, it was worth the research to resolve this. Many clues references to  Illinois, though... Ken PS - anyone who doesn't live in Mississippi and wants to send a research request to the Mississippi Archives for anything - use someone's Mississippi address and let them forward the research to you. 1. [PTREE] FW: Old Friends - Palmertree Mystery?
    2. Ken Jackson
    3. Gang, Thought I'd go ahead and forward this from our cousin, Jerry Dean. Thanks, J.D.! Kenny From: Jerry Dyer [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, November 11, 2011 6:28 PM To: Ken; Peggy Palmertree Subject: FW: Old Friends - Palmertree Mystery? Ken, Concerning that Douglas/Palmertree mystery. I called the corner of McDonough Co.-Blandinsville, Ill --he said that some of the the corner records from 1970 had been destroyed by fire. That he had been corner of Mcdonough Co, for 20 yrs( Loudman was corner before him for a long period of time) & that he had NO Records of that shooting. I contacted the Illinois State Library- their record just go back to 1886, I contacted the Macomb Public Library( For Blandinsville, Ill) NO LUCK. Put in a request at the Western Illinois University Archives(#1-(309)-298-2717 talked to JEFF(said he would check on my request & get back to me)--no news as yet I contacted the Sheriff of McDonough County-Macomb, Ill -Rick VanBrooker was sent an arrest list of Douglass-1 Travis Douglas(Chicago, Ill,Cook Co.)-Don't remember date - charge failed to show. & Erica Douglas(Chicago, Ill, Cook Co).-Don['t remember date-charge violating bail. That arrest list for Sheriff of McDonough Co.. Ill- Rick VanBrooker doesn't come up anymore. I found a Travis Douglas in Clarksdale, Ms -about 81 yrs old- phone#(662) -624-8916. Wonder if this is the same Travis Douglas that lived in Cook Co. Says he is related to Shirley Douglas. Can't seem to find ANYTHING in the Chicago Tribune Archives!! Was told their records just go from 1855 to 1954. That thought that maybe this happened in Batesville, Ms. might be worth checking. Isn't Clarksdale in Quitman, Co./ Batesville is close in Panola Co? Somewhere I thought that I found a W.A.J. Palmertree & a William Palmertree that were born in Illinois. Those records that you & O.D. have says that these guys were born in Ms(seems to me like it was on a 1855 Illinois Census)-by this time I am a little confused - what with all this checking!! There is a Mary A. Palmertree listed in Cook Co.(Maybe Chicago) Born 1843 & Died in 1860 could this be the family of the Palmertree that shot this Douglas? I found a Douglas message board--sent work for an alert for this mystery. Hope this gets to you. I have awful time trying to get anybody but Peggy on the Palmertree roots. web. Couldn't find anything to verify a shooting in this Blandinsville, Ill that is in McDonough Do. 3. Gang, Regarding the Marriages of Montgomery County, MS - check the Palmertree List archives. Peggy, Martina and I transcribed those marriages a long time ago and posted them to the Palmertree List. I used to be the administrator of the Montgomery County Website at Rootsweb. Seems like everyone got scared when they heard that Ancestry.com was buying out Rootsweb and their archives. So, most county lists have been moved to a server not affiliated with Rootsweb/Ancestry. I hate it when someone steals your hard work in genealogy without a fare thee well. I still have the book by Crouch/ Genola, which I purchased from them some years ago. Actually went to their home near Duck Hill and bought that (erroneous) book. So I'm venting, ok??? Ok, Ken ------------------------------------------- Jeannine, the one I have looked at in the past is a continuous list  of all marriages during a period of time in Montgomery County.  Maybe it is no long available.   Thanks   Beth

    3. Peggy, Thank you for these new obits. I have to get hopping and try to restore my genealogy database from 2005. I can't believe I didn't make a recent backup, at least before I was disabled last year. Please, let me remind those of you who do have a genealogy data file - BACK IT UP, BACK IT UP, BACK IT UP. Make sure you don't goof up like I did - if you do, it will depress you so much you will almost totally give up on researching your family roots. I am thank full I had enough sense to make that backup. It has all my basic family info, but I doubt if I'll ever be able to reconstruct the last 5 or 6 years of info. But, I'm baaaack.... Ken

    1. [PTREE] My brain is working again!
    2. Ken Jackson
    3. Gang, I recently received a note from Jerry Dean Palmertree Dyer regarding our Illinois mystery Palmertree. She has diligently tried to track down a source for this interesting article about the murder of a Mr. Douglas by a Mr. Palmertree, supposing to have taken place in Illinois in the late 1800s. She reminded me that on one census (will have to research this if Peggy doesn't remember off hand) that whoever gave the information for that census stated that the HOH Palmertree was born in Illinois. Well, that kicked a memory in my head of something my mother once told me. She said that my grandmother (Lou Annie Parkerson Palmertree) had told her that her father, Jonathan D. Parkerson, had come to Mississippi from Cairo, Illinois, working his way there as a cook on a paddle wheeler. Ok, so maybe it was a Palmertree story and not exactly a Parkerson story. I googled a map of the location of Cairo, Illinois. It is exactly at the southern tip of Illinois, where it borders Kentucky. It is in the Cape Girardeau, Missouri area. I remember searching and finding one James Palmertree in the mid-1800s in the Garrard Co. KY census. From the Palmertree Mailing list archives of 2003 (long note): ------------------------------------------------------------------- "From: Ken Jackson <[email protected]> Subject: [PTREE] New Palmertree Research Date: Wed, 08 Oct 2003 09:27:38 -0500 Gang, I've been working on this for a week or so now and wanted to post it even though I'm not quite done with it. As those of you who are interested in Palmertree family research know, I have been intrigued with my own theory that the James Palmertree who appears on the 1800 Garrard Co., KY Tax List is possibly a brother of our Jason, who is our earliest known ancestor. There is no doubt, however, that James and Jason are closely related. But at this point I have no definite proof yet. It's too bad both of them died before the 1850 census that showed place of birth. Here's what I've researched so far on our Missouri Palmertree line: Ken ---------- Descendants of James Palmertree First Generation 1. James Palmertree ,(1) son of <Unknown> Palmertree and <Unknown>, was born about 1770, died on 21 Apr 1828 in Howard County, Missouri, about age General Notes: Migration and family connection hypothesis: it is possible this James (1770 - 1828) is a brother of Jason Palmertree (1767 - 1840), ancestor of the Mississippi clan of Palmertrees. This James was listed on the Tax Rolls for Garrard County, Kentucky in 1800. My theory is that James and Jason came South together from one of the New England states in the early 1790s, splitting up - possibly in South Carolina - with Jason going on into Georgia to settle, later removing to Mississippi and James going on to Kentucky, removing to Bonne Femme township, Missouri prior to 1825. Historical Notes: "A Short History of Howard and Chariton Counties, Missouri" The first five counties of Missouri were St. Charles, St. Louis, St. Genevieve, Cape Girardeau, and New Madrid. By March 6, 1820, Missouri contained fifteen organized counties. Howard County was organized by an act of the General Assembly, January 13, 1816, and in force from March 1, 1816. It originally comprised all northwest Missouri and portions of southern Iowa. It presented an area of nearly 22,000 square miles, and was one-third as large as the present state of Missouri, and much larger than several of the New England states. By an act of legislature on February 16, 1825, Howard County was reduced to it's present limits. Howard County now embraces 463 square miles, instead of 22,000 as laid out in 1816. It is rather irregular in shape, about half of it lying in a great bend of the Missouri River, Glasgow being at the northwest and Rocheport the southeast corners, with Fayette at the center. The white man, in his migration westward, halted here and formed the earliest extensive settlements in central Missouri. It was known far and wide as the "Booneslick Country", a name originating in the fact that two of the sons of Daniel Boone, Nathan and Daniel, Jr., in 1807 evaporated "lick" water, and thus manufactured salt for domestic purposes. The circuit court, sitting as a county court, divided Howard County in 1816 into four townships, to wit: Moniteau, Bonne Femme, Chariton, and La Mine, naming them after certain streams of water. But when the first county court was organized five years later and held it's first session at Old Franklin on February 26, 1821, the county was divided into seven townships which were named Boonslick, Franklin, Richmond, Chariton, Prairie Moniteau, and Bonne Femme. Burton Township was organized in 1880 from territory taken out of Bonne Femme, Prarie, and Richmond Townships. In 1817 Franklin became the county seat of Howard County, being chosen by Benjamin Estill, David Jones, David Kincaid, William Head, and Stephen Cole, commissioners appointed for that purpose by the General Assembly of Missouri. The town of Fayette was laid out in 1823 and named for the illustrious French compatriot, Lafayette, who made his first visit to America in 1824. The county seat was at this time changed from Franklin to Fayette. The first courthouse in Fayette was built in 1824. North and South Moniteau Townships -- the townships of Howard County -- began as early as 1812. About this period Price Arnold located on section 23, township 49, range 15, having come from Mercer, Kentucky. The next year he took up another claim and was joined by William Head of Washington County, Virginia. When the War of 1812 ws declared and the western Indians became hostile, these two settlers erected a stronghold for the defense of themselves and their neighbors and called it Fort Head. A few of those who were with them were James Pipes, William Pipes, Joseph Austin, Perrin Cooley, Peter Creson, and Harry Lemons. During the years from 1817 to 1823, there came from Kentucky and Virginia and settled around Fort Head George Pipes, John Gray, Ephraim Thompson, James Hollum, Pleasant Pipes, Soloman and Zacchaus Barnett, Gerard Robinson, Waddy Curran, Thomas Tipton, and Federal Walker. Daniel Boone visited the Boone's Lick country about 1795. Among the famous men who lived in Howard County was Kit Carson. He was born in Madison County, Kentucky in 1809 and was brought by his father, Lindsey Carson, to the Boone's Lick country in * He appeared on the Tax List Replacement census in 1800 in Garrard * He appeared on the U. Just something interesting that Jerry Dean spurred in my memory. Would like to forward her note to me to this list, if she approves. I want you to see what kind of a genealogy researcher she has turned out to be in only about one year. Started out with finding the truth about a story she remembers being told about having a step-sister named Violet. Tracked it down and solved it - looks like she's on the way to solving this mystery, too!! Oh, so good to be back in research instead of rehab - ha ha ha. Ken

What I remember with my sawdust, was after the Civil War, William P'tree & his wife had gone to Illinois & their oldest son William (Bill) was born there.   ________________________________ From: Ken Jackson <[email protected]> To: Palmertree Mailing List <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, November 21, 2011 7:04 PM Subject: [PTREE] My brain is working again! 3. Just hope I can get all my research restore this weekend.   If not you maybe writing me at Parchment Pen.  For I may just come short of Killing Val.   Then Ken will finish her off, by pushing her down one of those Tenn. cullies.   I'm sending this email to her also so she will be expecting something bad if she leaves it in Southaven.  If she leaves the research she better leave the dogs!!!!   Peggy ________________________________ From: Ken Jackson <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, November 21, 2011 7:10 PM Subject: [PTREE] Obits Peggy, Thank you for these new obits.
