Chester Co Hartman, George, founder of the Hartman family in Chester Co, was John Hartman, a native of Schwerin, Hesse-Cassel. In 1753 he with his wife, whose names was Moses, emigrated to America with a family of 5 sons, John, George, Joseph, Peter and Christoper and several daughters, and landed in Phila. Of these Christoper was born May 6 1750, married Aug 1776 to Mary Hutchinson, of Mercer Co., NJ. In 1795 they moved to Lexington, KY and in 1801 to Clermot, Ohio, where he died March 16, 1833. One of the daughters maried a Rice and officer in the Rev.. John the emigrant, was twice married, and Abigail, a daughter by the 2nd wife, married Zachariah Rice, and was the mother of 22 children, 17 of whom walked in procession to their mother's grave. Zachariah Rice did much wor for the government during the Rev. On of Mr. Rice's daughters married Daniel Kable of Morganstown. She was the grandmother of Mrs. Dr. Hartman of West Chester Peter Hartman, s/o John was placed in Phila, with a wealthy German acquaintane of his father. Member of the Cont. Army, he married a widow named Stein, by whom he had one son, George. Mrs. Stein had been previously twice married to a Mr. Orner, by whom she had one son, Valentine, and afterwards she maried to Mr. Stein, by whom she had 5 children. Her maiden name was Smith, she had emigrated from Germany when young. George Hartman, s/o Peter, when 16, at the instance of his father, taught to beat the drum, and in a short time his proficiency was such that he received the appointment of drum-major, and was taken by his father through his military campaigns. George Hartman married Mary Elizabeth Hench, d/o Christian Hench. George Hartman was at one time sheriff of Chester Co. Of the 3 children born to him, the 3rd and only surviving one was Gen. George Hartman, who was born May 5, 1793. His children were Dr. William D., Granville, S.Mary T., wf of Isaac Sloanaker, Joshus W., G. Washington, Elisabeth Rabey and Albert S. and two died young. Montgomery Co Hartman, George Fetters (MD) of Norristown. He was the great-grandson of Major Peter Hartman, who srv in the Rev. as a capt and major; grandson of Peter Hartman (War of 1812) and son of David Hartman of Charlestown, Chester Co. and David Hartman married Fannie Sheldrake and they were the parint of Dr. George F. Hartman of Norristown George Fetters Hartman, born in Chester Co.. Aug 18, 1863 married in Phila. Oct 27, 1887, to Ella Stine, of Phila., and a d/o Peter K. Stine.
