So new researchers do not get confused, keep this in mind. Maria is a Saint name and all the females in such a family had the name Maria, then her Christian name; in the case of this person was Eva. When researching keeps this in mind, cause an ancestor may be in church records as both and sometimes in court records. Usually legal documents had only the Christian name but not always. In the case of Eva she dropped her Saint name of Maria by the 1850 census. Most of the males in old German families used the Saint name John, Joh, Johan but some did use the Saint name George. When Johannes was used usually it was a stand alone name, meaning there was no Saint name. Gordon A. One of my problems is, I cannot find anything on relatives; ie parents, brothers, sisters. Notes for PETER SCHLOSSER: >From the Book "The Bruner Brothers and Related Families" by Marilyn Miller THE SCHLOSSER'S FROM PLEITZENHAUSEN The family of Maria Eva Schlosser begins with her grandfather, Hans Valentin Schlosser. Hans was born in December of 1664 in Pleitzenhausen in the Rhineland, soon after the end of the 30 Years War. Since most records in Germany had been destroyed during this war, it was not possible to research the earlier members of the family. This was another very difficult family to put together since several Peter Schlossers lived in the same area of Pennsylvania during the same time period. Peter and Leonard Schlosser, who arrived in 1732 do not appear to be from our Schlosser family. There were two Peter Schlossers who arrived on the ship Edinburg on Sept. 16, 1751. They were possibly father and son. In Roberts History of Lehigh County(101) I found that Peter Schlosser applied for a patent in 1755 for 46 acres in Lower Milford Township. This land was patented in 1875 by Thomas Schearer. However, a Peter Schlosser is on the 1781 Tax List for Lower Milford Township, and I believe that he is Peter Schlosser,Jr. Peter Schlosser Sr.(II) died in 1752 and the administrlation papers for his estate were filed in Northampton County(102) on November 21, 1752. Peter was a cooper and his wife, Elizabeth gave up her right as administrator of his estate to her son, Peter Jr. Based on the evidence, I concluded that Peter Jr.'s wife was named Catharine Elizabeth since Peter and Catharine Elizabeth were sponsors at the baptism of Jacob and Maria Eva Gangwehr's son Peter. At this point we find a great deal of confusion with the women's names. Maria Eva's mother was Anna Elizabeth, and her son Peter married a woman named Catharine Elizabeth. This information is based on the above church book entry. However, there is another Peter Schlosser in Whitehall Twp. (probably a son of Leonhard), who was married to an Elizabeth Catharine. Still another Peter Schlosser is married to a Maria Elizabeth. The result was that I gave up trying to sort the families out and remained satisfied that in Mary Eve's family we have the correct names. There is a long, detailed genealogy of the Schlosser Family at the Lehigh County Historical Society, typed by Myron P. Wehr of Allentown, PA, March 1, 1983, but it relates to the families of the earlier Leonhardt and Peter. He does note that "Because of the confusion with first names and the lack of records, it is difficult to confirm the early men and the dates. We will therefore, list the information we have discovered, with comments as to their alignment." Only the marriage of Maria Eva Schlosser and Jacob Gangwehr, which appeared with this material, seems to apply to our Schlossers. In Annette Burgert's "Northern Kraichau" she notes that Peter Schlosser of Lower Milford Twp. was naturalized in 1765. This would have been the Peter Jr. in our Schlosser family. The first two generations of the Schlosser family were researched from the Pleitzenhausen church records in Germany.(103) The birth date of Maria Eva Schlosser was located among these records. From this information our German researcher(104) was able to put together her family and that of her grandparents. All existing church records for the period after the Schlossers arrived in Milford Township were searched, but little information was found. These included the Upper Milford Reformed Church in Zionsville, Lehigh County and the Chestnut Hill church in Milford Township. The records available in the Evangelical and Reformed Historical Society library in Lancaster, Pennsylvania(105) were also searched. Most information on this family concerned descendants of Leonard and Peter. I was also unable to find the date that Maria Eva Schlosser Gangwehr Morry died. None of the church records from the church she attended contained information about her death. The information concerning what we know of Maria Eva Schlosser's life has been included in the Addendum relating to the Gangwehr family. MARY EVE GANGWEHR MARRIES JACOB MORY Mary Eve Gangwehr married Jacob Mory (Morry, Mori, Morey) about 1785. Jacob was born in 1727 and died in 1793 at age 66 years, 4 months and ~ days. His death is recorded in the Great Swamp Church records . Jacob was the son of William Morey who warranted land on Saucon Creek about 1735. He died about 1764. His son, Jacob was a Justice of the Peace under the King in 1774 and again under the new government. William Mory provided land for the first German Lutheran and Reformed Church in the area. It is probably significant to note that Jacob Mory's will was probated just one month before the agreement with Mary Eve and her children. Jacob Mory made his will on July 5, 1775, before his marriage to Mary Eve. On July 22, 1785 he added a codicil, so we have concluded that their marriage occurred in 1785. His will gave four tracts of land (222 acres) in Upper Saucon to his son William, and two tracts with 237 acres to his son Peter, and ordered them to pay the following amounts of cash to his other children: Susannah Catharine, wife of John Wind, ú 270 Sabela Christina, wife of John Lerch, ú 270 Rosina, wife of Jacob Jacoby, ú 340 after age 19 Jacob Morry (under 20), ú 540 at age 20 The codicil gave Mary Eve livestock, household utensils, a stove and the privilege of staying in the house for 1 near after his death. Son Peter Mory was to cut and haul firewood and take care of the livestock for her. The will was probated on March 5, 1793. In view of the conditions in Jacob Mory's will, and the agreement with Henry Gangwehr, it appears that Mary Eve probably went to live with her youngest son, Jacob at the end of the year that she was permitted to live in the Mory home. I was delighted when I located a will for Mary Eve Mory in the Lehigh County Administration Records, File #185. It was "Exhibited" April 5, 1817 but "Not Acted Upon". Jacob Gangwehr was the administrator and the will is written in German. The reproduction was so poor that the lettering runs together and it was impossible to read it word for word. However, I managed to decipher the pertinent parts as follows: There was an Inventory of Goods and Chattels of Mary Eve Morry, widow late of Lower Saucon Township, Lehigh County. It was filed on June 18, 1818. The will was dated August 1795, and Jacob Gangwehr was the administrator. The estate totaled 151.90 pounds. Her children were listed as Peter Gangwehr, Johan Jacob Gangwehr, Christina and Andrew Bruiser, and Catharine and Abraham Bruiser. It is possible that Henry was also included, but I could not read his name. In the accounting there was recorded the following amounts due to her estate: Andrew Bruner, bond 15-8-0 Jacob Gangwehr, bond 16-7-11 Abraham Bruner, bond 45-4-0 Henry Gangwehr, 25-0-0 (These would be monetary amounts in pounds, shillings and pence.) It was not possible to form an opinion as to how these sums were determined. The amount owed by Abraham seems to indicate that he borrowed this sum from his mother-in-law to purchase his land in Lycoming County. His wife's share of the sale of Gangwehr land in 1793 provided additional funds. It was of interest to myself and the descendants of Abraham and Catharina Gangwehr Bruner that apparently Mary Eve died the same year as her daughter Catharine and approximately at the same time. Notes for JACOB Gangwehr: The Blue Church Records lists a marriage date of 28 March 1758 for Gangewehr, Jacob son of Jacob Gangewehr the elder, from Upper Saucon and Maria Eva Schlosser. The intestate will of Jacob is in the Registar of Wills, Northampton Co. NO.531. Maria signed off her right to administrator of the will. John Apple and Phillip Baal were appointed on July 27, 1771. They placed the land in trust for 22 years. April 2, 1793 Maria and her four younger children agreed to sell the land to the eldest son Henry. 96. Northampton County Deed Book A-2, pg 318 A will for Maria Eva Mory is in the Lehigh Co. Administration Records File # 185. It was listed April 5, 1817. The estate total 151.9 pounds sterling According the Marilyn Miller Jacob Jr. died intestate in 1771, leaving a wife, four children and one unborn child: Henry, Peter, Christina, Catharina and Johann Jacob. Jacob died without a will. Maria Eva gave up her right as an administrator of the estate, soon after his death. John Apple and Philip Baal were then appointed administraators. The placed the land in trust and managed the estate for 22 years. In the meantime Maria Eva married Jacob Mory. The decision to not sell the land , saved Jacob's wife and children from the circumstances that caused Heinrich Bruner's heirs to lose much of their inheritance. Heinrrich's land was sold and the money invested, but the Revolutionary war resulted in a change in the monetary system, and the loss of money as a result. In the Northampton Co. Courthouse there is an agreement dated April 2, 1793 between Mary Eva and her four younger children to sell all of Jacob's property to the eldest son Henry Gangwehr. Apparently, Johannes, the first born son, whose birth is recorded in the Freidensville Reformed Church records, Upper Saucon, died before 1793, since he is not mentioned in this document. According to Marilyn Miller, Mary Eva's second husband was a justice of the peace under the King in 1774 and again under the new government. William Mory provided land for the first German Lutheran and Reformed Church in the area. A will for Mary Eve Mory is in the Lehigh Co. Administration Records, file # 185. It was "exhibited" April 5, 1817 but "not acted upon". The estate totaled 151.9 pounds sterling. Apparently Mary Eva and her daughter Catherine died the same year and approximately at the same time as each other. 95. Northampton County Administrative Bond dated July 27, 1771, File #531. Notes for HENRY Gangwehr: Henry, in all probability a son of Jacob Gangwehr b.1732/33, was born June 7, 1765, and died Nov. 2, 1849, and was buried in the burial ground adjoining the Friedensville church in Upper Saucon. He was a farmer on the old Gangwehr homestead, which was divided during his lifetime, two of his sons, Solomon and John, each receiving a portion on which they built homes. Upon the part retained by Henry Gangwehr and that of Solomon, iron ore beds were discovered, which were worked for many years by the Thomas Iron Company and the Bethlehem Iron Company. For the last ten years the Bingen Brick Company has been engaged in manufacturing brick from the dirt that had been washed from the ore. Additional information was found at the Pennsylvania Historical Society Library in Philadelphia, and was part of the "Wittman Family and Allied Lines of PA" by Helen Wittman Kohl, a descendant of Christiana (I.4). The proper name Tilghman was popular in the 1800's into the early 1900's in Bucks, Lehigh and Northampton Counties of PA. I have 14 relatives in my data base between 1830 and 1914 using this proper name. Does anyone know the history behind this proper name being used in eastern Pennsylvania? There is a Tilghman street in Allentown, PA. Was this a surname first and then a proper name? Any help appreciated, thank you.
