    1. [PALEHIGH-L] BETHLEHEM
    2. Ann Rickard
    3. According to "The Pennsylvania Line" - In 1900, Bethlehem Boro, in Bethlehem Twp., Northampton Co. had a population of 7,293 with a railroad station, a telegraph office, an express office and a post office. In 1900, West Bethlehem Boro in Hanover Twp., Lehigh Co. had a population of 3,465 with NO railroad station, no telegraph station, no express office, and no post office. It seems logical to assume that Bethlehem's facilities served both communities, and people would say they were "from Bethlehem".

My main point should have read that I think the City was in only Northampton County in pre-1900... and that the city grew into Lehigh County. For the past year I have been deleting all queries concerning Bethlehem; unless they specifically stated "LEHIGH COUNTY" and told the posted the city was in Northampton County (believing that at usually pre-1850) the statement to be correct in relation to the period of time spoken of... If this in incorrect; and a portion of Bethlehem's west end has ALWAYS been in Lehigh County; I will consider accepting posts, if a significant section of that city rests in Lehigh County.... Again, my first post was poorly worded; I concede and am fully aware that some part of the city is in Lehigh, I am only questioning how much of the city falls inside Lehigh... Jim

    3. ok, some of it may be in Lehigh County, but I believe this to be more recent than pre-1900 or so... I also question the use of LARGE portion. I have not consulted maps (yet, but intend to do so)... I would venture to say maybe 1/8 of the city is in Lehigh County... I would have thought that the State would have had more common sense than to erect a county line through a city... I'm trying not to confuse people, and believe me, I did when I started... For genealogy purposes, I've told people that the city is in Northampton County, as I believed that pre-1900; Bethlehem may have existed solely in Northampton County... If this wrong, let me know; I am aware that today there is a portion of the west end in the county of Lehigh... not sure how long its been in lehigh though... Always willing to hear the answer... 2. James M. Gilbert
    3. Jennifer, There should be lookups for Bethlehem, in Northampton. Lehigh County would not supply lookups because the City of Bethlehem is in Northampton County, not Lehigh. I have had offers, but since Bethlehem is not part of Lehigh County; I send them to the Northampton GenWeb page... Suggest you contact the Northampton Coordinator if no page exists as of yet for Bethlehem look-ups... I am only concerned about municipalties that are within the bounds of Lehigh County. At no time has Bethlehem been inside Lehigh County (to the best of my knowledge the county bounds have not changed since its erection in 1812). >From the top of my head I believe Northampton Co page is... http://www.rootsweb.com/~panortha/ Sorry, hope the Northapton County site can help... 2. <<I've been trying to find the address of this cemtery. Does it have another name as I have been unable to find it in any index. Thanks.>> I visited Hillcrest Cemetery in Allentown located on Fullerton Avenue. I think it has been referred to as Hillside Cemetery, Fullerton. I also think it may be the cemetery for St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, but I have not had confirmation of that. I wrote to the church in July, but I have not heard from them. Anyway, the Hillside Cemetery I visited was just south of Hwy 22 on the west side of the Fullerton Ave. It had a stone gate entrance. I was not able to get an address for it as there was not one listed in the phone book. I located the cemetery by calling the phone number in the Allentown phone book, that number was forwarded to the cemetery owner in Philadelphia. She gave me the directions to the cemetery. I don't have her phone number or name. I hope this helps. Sheri

    1. [PALEHIGH-L] Net Agents Trace Your Roots
    2. Shalori
    3. Net Agents Trace Your Roots Was cousin Virgil really run out of the county for stealing hogs? Or are you the descendant of a noble lord, as has been rumored in the family for years? Riding the wave of popular genealogy, Broderbund Software's Family Tree Maker now puts Internet "agents" to work for you to complete your family's history. It also allows you to publish that history on the Internet and share those ancestral high and low points with others. A Broderbund spokesman says the program's "agents" help dig up your family information, whether it is contained in an online vital records database compiled by a genealogy society, a home page focused on a specific family and its heritage or CD-ROM databases with government and historical records. The agents scour the Net for new genealogy information and sites to complement data on more than 153 million people currently available through the program's CD collection. A FamilyFinder Report included in the program automatically compares all family names, dates, geographic locations and other details and guides you to appropriate Internet sites, the spokesman says. Searchers can combine their reports, trees and stories into a spell-checked family book that can be published on your home printer or on the Internet itself. Cost information is available at the Web site.

    3. Dishing Up the Dirt on Ancestors Online Looking for a genealogy site with a difference? The International Black Sheep Society Web site may be just your cup of historical tea. http://www.thirdage.com/news/archive/ALT01980820-02.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Looking for a genealogy site with a difference? The International Black Sheep Society may be just your cup of historical tea. But there are rules: Everyone associated with the site must be descended from an infamous individual of public knowledge and ill repute. First, click off the annoying sheep baaing at the top of the page, then get to the dirt. You'll find it in member stories, neatly arranged in alphabetical order. Real names are included unless the black sheep is still living. Among the most colorful black sheep included is Carole's great uncle Charlie Jordan. He brought home opium pipes and hookahs after a stint as a mercenary for the French in World War I. That's before he headed south to ride with Pancho Villa. The "Flock Funnies" include a number of "You might have a black sheep if"" jokes. There's a page of poetry and links to standard genealogy pages.

    1. [PALEHIGH-L] 1910 Census - EDs
    2. I rented three films of the 1910 Census for Lehigh County and have been trying to find Catasauqua and Fullerton Enumeration Districts. The Lehigh Co. Films have the EDs from 131-205. There are some Catasauqua EDs (166-168, 172) but it looks like there should be more. ED 169 and 170 cover Emaus (?) Borough and ED-171 has Fountain Hill Borough. Does Fullerton have another name? I have found Copley but no mention of Fullerton. Are there EDs from 1 to 130 which are not on these films from AGLL (Heritage Quest)? I plan to check with the Soundex Index, but I don't have them at present and am trying to get all the information I can from these microfilms before returning them. If anybody can point me to a map of Lehigh which shows the boundaries of the boroughs and townships, I would be appreciative. 1. [PALEHIGH-L] Aaron Neff
    2. Hello, I need help researching Aaron Neff (2/14/1822-8/18/1902). I am trying to confirm his parents were John Neff (4/18/1800-4/5/1853) and Salome Schmidt Neff(4/20/1804-12/21/1880). My gg-grandfather Paul Neff's obituary gave his parents names as Aaron and Elizabeth(Rehrig) Neff. I found Aaron Neff's grave at Heidelberg Church Cemetery. Lehigh County Courthouse does not have a death record for Aaron Neff and I have been unable to locate an obituary for him. Please contact me if you have any information that can help my research.
