My GGgrandfather was Levi WORLEY b. Mar 1817, d. 23 May 1902. The following quote is from Montgomery's "Historical and Biographical Annals of Berks County," 1909 - "LEVI WORLEY (deceased) for many years one of Reading's prominent business men, and a pioneer in the coal tar pavement business, was born in Saegersville, a small town near Allentown, Lehigh Co., Pa, only child of Jacob Worley, a well know farmer of Lehigh county, where he died." Anyone recognize Jacob WORLEY? Pete Ballerstedt ballers@pioneer.net
Good Afternoon, Several days before Christmas someone was kind enough to send me an address where I may be able to write for the records of Zeigel's church which was in Weissenberg Township, Northampton County PA, in the 1760's. Over the holidays, in all the confusion and company, I misplaced the address and now that I am ready to compose my letter - I do not know where to send it. If anyone knows where the records of Zeigel's church are kept, would they please re-send the address to me. Thank you for your time and patience. Janet in Baton Rouge, LA
Happy New Year! Looking for parents of Sarah REINHARD (1840-1899) of North Whitehall Twp., Lehigh Co., m. 1861 George MEALEY (1837-1895) of County Derry, Ireland. Family had MEALEY's Dance Hall on Hamilton Street (now City Hall or Lehigh Co. Hist. Soc.), Allentown, Lehigh Co., PA in the 1910s through 1940s. They had an orchestra and ballroom dancing. The MEALEYs (incl. Sarah) were associated with Grace Evangelical Congregational Church in Cetronia and are buried there. Thanks everyone, guess I'm having trouble because REINHARD is a rather common name. Sue

Another reason why all questions should be answered on the rootsweb, so all of us can enjoy the answer to the questions asked. George Van Riper
Jim Rodgers - I know just how you feel. Same thing happens to me. I didn't realize that the answers to my question was not showing on the lists - so....... here goes. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`` My questions was: > At a military funeral (also Pres.) why are the boots placed backwards in > the saddle on the horse? Following are answers I received (without the writers' names) - since I didn't ask permission. 1) Your answer may possibly be found at: http://www.arlingtoncemetery.com/fullhono.htm It talks about a major general being buried and states: In one stirrup will be a cavalry boot, turned backward - an indication the retired Army major general will never ride again. 2) In answer to your question about why the boots are placed backwards in the saddle on the horse at a military funeral. This is to signify their last ride. 3) There is a infomercial about military funerals that plays from time to time and I pay extra special attention. You might try and see if there is an Arlington Cemetery site that might explain it. I'm pretty sure it is to symbolize the Fallen Comrade. 4)It's from way back in Cavalry (horse soldiers) days - the books are 'faced' that way because the person will never again put those boots on for battle - his battle is done. When uniforms/boots were 'set up' so a cavalry soldier could 'jump into them' for battle, they faced forward since the soldier was going "forward into battle". 5) A horse lead with the boots in the stirrups backwards is the equivalent to the Air Forces missing man formation. The boots are backwards to signify the missing rider/leader. It is typically reserved for those of a high office. You might notice that it is not only used at a Presidential funeral but it is also commonly used in a Police Officers funeral when the Officer was killed in action. Thanks again to all who contributed, Arline

I find this to be a constant annoyance. Response to a general genealogical/historical question should be addressed to the list. What most of us see is the question and a thank you but never the answer to the question. Bill, I would try either the PA-Lehigh Webpages on Rootsweb (http://www.rootsweb.com/~palehigh), or the USGENWEB archives (http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ussearch.htm) I found a few Online Census Websites, you could try those as well: 1880 Census Online (1% Sample) (ftp://ftp.genealogy.org/pub/1880/) Indiana online census'page (http://www.census-online.com/links/IN_data.html) USA online census' page (http://www.census-online.com/links/index.html) Bethlehem, PA 1890 Census (http://www.enter.net/~ritar/) Census Website (http://www.genealogy.org/census/contents.shtml) If you find any others, I would like to know about them! While shopping for Christmas I noted a collection of photographs which obviously belonged as a whole. They must have been sold in an estate sale to an antique dealer. I rescued the ones which were identified with names and sometimes locations. I'd like to find the family of these people and see that they get these photos. There were more that I did not purchase and I can go back for them if I find the family of these. I hated to sink too much money on this whim. They have all been taken by photographers from Allentown, PA. and I would guess c. 1900-1915. Photos I have are: Marie Fritch of Macungie, PA Blanche R. More of Catasaugua, PA Anson Sittler Roy Stewart Harry Metzgar Herma Moyer of Macungie, PA Mabel and Maude Miller Mabel Miller Minnie Weaver of Egypt, PA Florence Barron of Coopersburg, PA Miriam Taylor of Annville, PA Margaraet Prizer of Schwankville, PA Mary Ann Reed of Lorane, PA Alfred Keefer Florence Keefer If you have a connection to any of these or know of someone who does, please contact me. http://www.webspawner.com/users/familyhistorygame/ Patsy patsy@penn.com

Hello Rooters, This is not really a genealogy question but rooters are always finding interesting tid-bits and I cannot find an answer to this: At a military funeral (also Pres.) why are the boots placed backwards in the saddle on the horse? Thanks for any info or referral where I can find it. Arline
