(When I converted from R3 to TMG all marriages without data were lost and I've been rebuilding them for low these 12 years.) This will be corrected on my next update. On the night of Oct 2 Orville drank more coffee than usual and lay awake for a long time. The curious performance of the glider was on his mind and a perception dawned on him. When Wilbur awoke the next morning Orville told him the solution. if they made the vertical rudder move the machine would turn under control. It seemed their two minds had become one and Wilbur immediately recognized Orville had solved the final problem. They rebuilt the vertical rudder as envisioned by Orville. It moved with the wing warping conceived by Wilbur. On October 8, Wilbur kicked off from the summit of the dune in perfect control and making a long S turn. He flew nearly 300 feet. Thus, was born the three axis controls that is used in airplanes from the Wright Flyer to the Boeing 747 to the space shuttle and every aircraft flying in the world today. Wilbur remarked that the secret of flight was control and not power. Oct 13 , 1902. Wilbur remained in the air practically stationary for 43 seconds, "about three times the best of anyone else."
