The first of the Metzger family to settle in Dauphin county, was Jacob Metzger a native of Germany, who first resided near Middletown, in that time Lancaster County, and afterward in Londonderry township, Dauphin county. His son, Jacob Metzgar Jr, married Mary Brandt, a native of Cumberland county. They were members of the Dunkard church. They reared a large family, Children; David, Barbara, Eva, Joseph, Jacob, Martin, Elizabeth, Martin, Esther and Catharine. David Metzger, was born in 1779, member of the Dunkard Church, and he died 1832. He married Eva Rothrock, who died March 13, 1843. Children: Jacob, Christina, wife of Joseph Gingrich, Margaret, Barbara, who married John Meyers, 2nd to Frederick Beck, of Lancaster county, John, Leah, wife of John Stout of Hanover, Henry and Adam Henry Metzger, born Sept 17, 1827. Lancaster Co, married Fanny Keyler, Amanda, the wife of John Rider, Emma, the wife of Frank Hoffer, of Mt. Joy. Memhers of the Mennonite Church. Adam Metzger, of Middletown, was born Jan 9, 1830. In 1852 he married Elizabeth, d/o Matthias Brenser, of Londonderry township. She died Sept 9, 1894. Children: Millard, who married Elizabeth Meckley, d/o Jacob, of Elizabethtown, M artin, married Ruth Roth, d/o Abram, John and Solomon, who died at age 23 Metzger-Monroe County I. Christian Metzger, grandfather, was born in Bucks County, and he was one of the early settlers of Ross township, Monroe County. He married Elizabeth "Strout:. Children: Samuel, Tena, wife of John Shupp, of Chestnut Hill township, Monroe Co., Julia A., wife of William Newhart, Annie, the wife of Levi Frantz of Ross township, and Lavian, the wife of Jacob Bond of Chestnut Hill. II. Samuel Metzger, of Ross township, married Catharine Smith III Eduard Metzger, born 1844, married Emma S. Frantz, d/o Charles of Ross township. Decker-Metzger-Monroe County Daniel S. Decker. married in 1860, Margaret J. Metzger. She was born Dec 25, 1843, near E. Stroudsburg, a d/o George A. Metzger, of Middle Smithfield, was was born 1813. He died 1888 at the home of his son, W.H. Metzger,with home the father and mother resided a number of years in their old age. The were members of the M. E. Church. The mother bore the maiden of Elanor Winans, and she was born and reared in Middle Smithfield township. Margaret J. (Decker) Metzger, was the eldest child of 9 children: 1. Margaret J., 2. Jonas who died in childhood, 3. Mary, who married W. F. Nyce, 4. Hannah who married W. R. Stright of Phila., 5. Franklin who married Emlira Sebring, of Price township, 6. John J., born at Stroudsburg, he married Blanche E. Bowman, 7. Lizzie, married William H. Bugless of Pocono township, 8. William H., born March 28, 1856 at Stroudsburg, 9. George M. born March 8, 1858, lived at Wilkes Barre, married Mary E. Crandall of Bradford Co. Metzger-Lancaster Co Henry S. Metzger, undertaker of Petersburg Lancaster Co., was born in East Hempfield township, Sept 23, 1832, a son of Jacob and Mary (Smailing), both native of West Hempfield. Frederick Metzger, the grandfather, was born in Lancaster county, Sept 26, 1768 and is supposed to be the founder of the family in this country, whom traidtion says came from Germany. He married Catharine Dengart, who died Oct 8, 1870. Children: Elizabeth, married Tobias Miller, Mary, married John Stillinger, Catharine who married Peter Mumma, Susan, married Jacob Seachrist, Andrew, Jacob, David, who died Dec 2, 1891. Jacob Metzger, born Dec 23, 1798 and spent his whole life in East and West Hempfield, he died Dec 28, 1846, he married Mary Smailing was born March 3, 1801 and died March 22, 1869.
