I'm not an LDS member, and I have never submitted my own information to them, but it's my recollection that when I looked into it, that they were up front about informing you what their intentions were as far as using it. The LDS has the largest amount of genealogy material of anyone in the world. They share it through their libraries free of charge to anyone. When you are researching events prior to the every person census of 1850 one has to rely very heavily upon them. Land records and legal documents and church records they have microfilmed are among the main tools that are available. It would be virtually impossible to personally visit all those places where the information resides. The IGI is just one of the things they offer and while some of the submissions to the IGI may not be correct, I have traced family back to 1618 in Europe by using it as one of the main tools. I don't believe they intentionally ever try to perpetuate false information and I really don't understand the LDS bashing that seems to have become so popular. What bother me was the rep. of the LDS of taking data and incorporated in their database without the owners permission.
