How can a non-LDS member access their information? Is it necessary to travel to the ends of the earth (Utah)? --- NEILEL@aol.com wrote: > > I'm not an LDS member, and I have never submitted my > own information to > them, but it's my recollection that when I looked > into it, that they were up > front about informing you what their intentions were > as far as using it. LDS has research libraries all over the place and they will order films for you to view on site. I think there is a small fee. If your order public records that are not available through your local public library, it may be worth the time and trouble. No, you don't have to travel to Utah. You can access their library catalog online at their website: www.familysearch.org You can search for information on books containing surnames you are researching or the localities where your ancestors lived. You can search for church records at the same site. Just jot down the call numbers that are listed, and then locate a Family History Center in your area. A list of centers can also be found on the LDS site. The Family History Centers will order the microfilms for you, and you can research them at their facility. There is a minor charge for the film rental. They do not charge an exhorbitant fee. Much of the information found in the IGI files on the LDS website has been taken directly from church and local town records. Not all of it is submitted by other researchers. It is listed on each page, if the information was submitted or came from official documents and records. If it was from an official document, it will give a Batch # and page number. You can click on the Batch # and it will bring up a page where all you have to do is add the page number or "00" if there was no number, and it will bring you up an index of all the records found in that document. If you determine you would like more information on an individual, you can get the "call numbers" for that document and have a Family History Center order it for you. I have yet to be treated rudely by any of their staff workers, and no, I am not a member of the LDS church. Hope this answers your question.
