Family legend has it that our ancestors (Johann George GOECKLE/GOECKEL and spouse Catherine) settled for a time in the Lebanon County area, migrating to what is now Wythe County, Virginia from that area circa 1768. Thus far no one has been able to discover a maiden name for Catherine although it appears she and John George were married sometime in 1762 with their first child, Anna Catherine, making her appearance 10 Mar 1763. At least two other children were born while the family was in Pennsylvania (John Jacob 8 Oct 1764 and John George Jr. 31 Mar 1766) and possibly a fourth child (Anna Mary 7 Apr 1768) was born there as well. These first children were supposed baptized by Johann Casper Flower and the baptisms were witnessed by Johann and Mary Stroh, Jacob Bender and Catherine Weisen. Some records indicated the Rev. Stoever baptized these first children but I haven't been able to find them listed in records of baptisms he attended. Some of the other families associated with the GOECKLE/GOECKEL family who were early settlers of Wythe County were the KETTRENINGS and CREGARS (both names somehow evolved eventually into CATRON), KEESLINGS, WAMPLERS, STEFFYS, FOGLESONGS, CASSELLS, UMBERGERS, LIDIS/LEEDYS and others. At least one researcher from several years ago believed John George GOECKLE to be the son of Johann Mattheus and Anna Barbara (GAENSLER) GOECKEL from the Saxe Meiningen, Thuringia area in Germany. It has been believed for a long while that John George immigrated to this country as a young man on the Ship Peggy in 1754. Not knowing Catherine's maiden name no one has yet been able to ascertain where she was originally from but everyone is certain that she was also German. Any direction here would be greatly appreciated. Dianna in MO
