By an interesting coincidence, today there was this story in a chat column of our local community newspaper (Siesta Key Florida PELICAN). Headline: Taking a swing at Typhoid "In the early 1900s typhoid epidemics were rampant and a Kansas doctor was convinced that flies were the source. It was while he was at a baseball game that he fielded the idea for an advertising campaign to publicize his attempts to combat flies. Fans began shouting 'Sacrifice fly, sacrifice fly'. Followed by "Swat that fly". There was his campaign slogan: 'Swat that fly'. It caught on and a Boy Scout leader followed up with a civic campaign for his troop,. They used screening and some yardsticks to create 'fly bats'. When brought to the attention of the good doctor he declared an even better name would be the 'fly swatter'". And this funny from the same column (Pardon the violation of the no humor rules ... The device which copies text from the paper didn't know where to stop.
