Dave, Who was your ancestor? I have a Blauch ancestor who m a ships carpenter on the canal also. This man, Jacob Renkenberger, was b in Columbiana Co., OH. I remember reading in some of my OH research of a call for workers there for the canal. Jacob married Sarah Blauch d/o Samuel who lived in Waterworks, Leb Co, also connected with the Canal (for you non-natives). I believe you are correct re: the name of Union Deposit relating to the Union Canal. The Union Canal House, a present-day tavern is located in Union Deposit - the actual town. Egle, in his Hist of Dau & Leb Co. says " Union Deposit was laid out by Philip Wolfersberger 7/30/1845, and called Unionville. . . The place, however, always went by the name of Union Deposit, from the fact of its being a deposit of all the grain produce, etc., of this region, preparatory to its shipment on the canal by Mr. Wolfersberger, who owned sevral boats."
