BIOGRAPHICAL ANNALS OF LEBANON COUNTY Page 331 and 332 (1904) HENRY H. KREIDER, one of the leading citizens of Annville, vice-president of the Annville National Bank, and head of the firm of Kreider & Company, dealers in lumber, coal and grain, was born September 30, 1835, in the old Kreider homestead in South Annville township, Lebanon county, a son of David and Sarah (Henry) Kreider. Henry H. Kreider was educated in the public schools of Annville later attending school at Mechanicsburg, and still later the Annville Academy. From 1855 to 1860 he engaged in teaching school, and from 1860 to 1866 he was in the mercantile business as a member of the firm of Kimports & Kreider, disengaging himself in order to embark in a milling business which he carried on for some four years. Later he added coal, in 1872 becoming interested in coal and grain, and adding lumber in 1891. Mr. Kreider has been a very successful business man, and is well and widely known because of his large interests in Annville and vicinity. For many years he has been one of the most progressive and public spirited of the town's citizens, his interest in the growth and development of her resources being shown in the organizations of the Lebanon Valley College, in 1867, of which he as been a trustee ever since, and was also treasurer until 1899. To Mr. Kreider more than to any other man, on account of his efforts during his long incumbency of the office of treasurer of the college, is due its development to its present stage. Mr. Kreider was also one of the organizers of the Annville National Bank, of which he has been a director since its foundation, and since 1893 has been its very efficient vice-president. Another large and important business enterprise which owes much to the energy of Mr. Kreider is the Annville Water Company, of which he is also president, and he was one of the original directors of the electric railroad from Lebanon to Annville, which was subsequently sold to another company, which extended the road to Palmyra. In 1876 he was elected to the office of prothonotary of Lebanon county for a term of three years, and previous to that he was county auditor for a term of three years. Mr. Kreider was originally a Whig, and later a strong Republican in politics, in which he was taken an active part. His first vote was cast for John C. Fremont. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention from his native State in 1884, when James G. Blaine was nominated for president. On September 6, 1859, Mr. Kreider was married to Mary Hoverter, daughter of Christian Hoverter, of Annville, and the following named children have been born to this union: Morris David, who is a carpenter by trade; William Henry, who graduated from the Lebanon Valley College in 1894, and from the Law Department of Yale University in 1896, subsequently took a special course in law in 1897, the same year was admitted to practice in all the courts of Connecticut, and in 1898 was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar, and is now in successful law practice in Philadelphia, being a partner of Senator John C. Grady, the leader of the Republican party in the Pennsylvania Legislature; and Mary E., still at home, who took a classical course in Lebanon Valley College, graduating in 1899, graduated after a course in instrumental music in 1896, and in vocal music in 1898, and took a musical course in the London Conservatory of Music in 1898. ```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` ``` HENRY H. KREIDER. Henry H. Kreider, son of David Kreider and Sarah Henry, was born Sept. 30, 1835, at the old homestead in South Annville township, Lebanon Co., Pa. (See Kreider record.) His early advantages of education were such as the public schools afforded, supplemented by a full course at the Annville Academy. Five years were subsequently spent in teaching. He then embarked in mercantile pursuits, which he continued for a period of six years, when he commenced operating extensively in grain and coal, and also became interested in milling enterprises. He was one of the incorporators of the United Brethren Mutual Aid Society, and of which he is now treasurer. Since the organization of the Lebanon Valley College, at Annville, he has been one of its trustees and its treasurer. He has served as county auditor, and in 1876 was elected prothonotary of Lebanon County. Mr. Kreider married, in 1859, Mary Hoverter, daughter of Christian Hoverter, of Annville, and their children surviving are Morris D., William H., and Mary E. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill Wilcox" <wilcoxphoto@dmci.net> To: <PALEBANO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 26, 2006 12:34 PM Subject: [PALEBANO] Mary Howerter Kreider wife of Henry H. Hello Sharon, Sorry I can't be of any help with photos of your Howerter line, but maybe you can be of help to me. I am looking for the parents and siblings for a Susanna Howerter who married Peter Mentzer on 24 July 1804. Just wondered if you have ever come across them in your search. Richard, I am so glad I could help you. I looked up Henry for you and at first couldn't find anything except a Frederick and Peter Zeller at the age you mentioned. Then I put his name in again at a different location and found a Johan Heinrich Zeller b. Aug. 9, 1780 and d. Nov. 3, 1837 in Lebanon, PA, he married a Susanna Dewees. Does this sound right. I also found a John Zeller in the 1830 Census that lived in PA, Berks Co., Amity Twp. who was in the age group of 40-50. Let me know if any of this sounds close and I will investigate further. I also looked up Lovina and Absolam in other census and found that Absolam lived in California in 1880. They listed him as married but she was not living with him. She was living in Millcreek, Lebanon Co., PA in 1880 with her daughter Susan and Susan's children. If this sounds right I will give you all the info I can find. I do belong to Ancestry.com and have found the census information to be very helpful. I joined once before at a yearly rate and dropped it because of the cost. I now belong at a monthly rate of $23.00 and have found a lot more info than before. You can also look up info for free at the Mormon site, but you have to watch what you trust on all sites. I will wait to hear from you and I am very glad to help you out. I only hope that I will be able to do what your doing when I'm 90. Talk soon, Jill Baer p.s. No, the campground to which I referred is actually a camground; trailers and motorhomes, most of them paying an annual fee. I am talking about the Cocalico Creek Campground situated just off PA Rte 897 between Kleinfeltersville and Blainsport. Mt. Gretna is another matter, entirely. They are indeed summer houses; some of them are quite substantial. There is a nice restaurant, the Hideaway, and an ice cream place called the Jigger shop. The PA National Guard used to hold a summer encampment there for two weeks, I believe, every summer. Their drills used to attract quite a few spectators, as I remember. That was a long time ago. I grew up in Newmanstown; but I have lived in Florida for the past 33 years. I spent my summers in Pennsylvania to visit my relatives and to do genealogy in the various facilities in the area. Now I am on the verge of becoming a nonagenarian and find it necessary to curtail my activities. So I hope you will indulge me if and when I ask you, from time to time, to be my eyes and legs. My father was in the National Guard. He was a general's aide. I vaguely remember going to Mr. Gretna as a child. One visit I remember was a Governor's Revue. Part of the ceremony was held at night. Two things that I remember vividly were the big cannons being shot off. The noise was deafening, or so I thought. The other were the Caissons being pulled by horses around the field. I must have been 4 or 5 at that time. Anna in Az
This campground could be Mt. Gretna. I don't know if it still exists but I went the as a child. It was church related but I think there was a "camp meeting" area and a public area. I will e-mail you either way, and thank you for trying to find where it belongs. Ely who died 15 April 1875 in Lebanon Boro, leaving a wife, Elizabeth, and 5 adult daughters? Also, if anyone has Lebanon Masonic connections, would you please look for anything pertaining to A.S.Ely in Lebanon Masonic records? Thank you.
I've "rescued" an old photograph of Lizzie M. BOMBERGER which was taken at the Elite Studio in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1870's or 1880's with Lizzie appearing to be about 1 year old at the time it was taken. Based on limited research I believe this may be a photograph of Lizzie M. BOMBERGER b. 4 Jun 1870 in Schaefferstown, PA to parents Jacob BOMBERGER and Caroline BECKLEY. I was able to trace the family through census records from 1900 to 1920 with records providing the following information: 1900 census - Lebanon, PA: Jacob H. BOMBERGER, age 62, born Sept 1837, married 36 years, born PA, parents born PA, a Retired Farmer Caroline BOMBERGER, wife, age 55, born Mar 1845, married 36 years, 4 children/4 living, born PA, parents born PA William A. BOMBERGER, son, age 33, born Oct 1866, born PA, a Farmer Lizzie M. BOMBERGER, dau, age 29, born Jun 1870, born PA Sallie A. BOMBERGER, dau, age 27, born Mar 1873, born PA Living next door to the family is the family of John & Relthea BOMBERGER who are in their 60's suggesting that John and Jacob may be siblings. 1910 census - South Lebanon, PA: Jacob H. BOMBERGER, age 72, married 46 years, born PA, parents born PA Caroline BOMBERGER, wife, age 65, married 46 years, 4 children/4 living, born PA, parents born PA William BOMBERGER, son, age 42, born PA Elizabeth BOMBERGER, dau, age 39, born PA 1920 - Lebanon, PA: William A. BOMBERGER, age 53, born PA Elysbeth M. BOMBERGER, sister, age 49, born PA I'm hoping to locate someone from Lizzie's family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to its rightful place with family. If you are a member of her family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
