    3. Francine, Here are some links that are good reading on Hessian Soldiers of the Revolutionary War. http://web.cgocable.net/~hessian/index.html http://members.tripod.com/~Silvie/Hessian.html http://www.netaxs.com/~gothic/Hessian.html http://pages.prodigy.net/halschwalm/jshahome.html As you have already found out, to find out who our ancestors were we must also know about the history of their times. There is no single reference to find the names of the Hessian Soldiers. The HETRINA (Hessian Troups in North America) is a good place to start. Check with your local Historical Societies to find if they have a copy. There are also the muster rolls. Again, check with your local Historical Societies for these. They are not available on the internet. Hope this helps. Bob Bensing > Bob, is there a list of Hessian Soldiers? How would you know that > someone was > one? Were the soldiers pay pensions? 3. Rich, The Hessian Soldiers of the Revolutionary War are a forgotten lot. There were about 30,000 of these mercenaries who were paid to fight for the English king. About 6,000 stayed in North America after the war. There was a group who stayed in Canada. For the ones who stayed in the United States, the majority stayed in Fredrick, MD and in Lancaster and Reading PA. Another mailing list, AMREV-HESSIANS, is devoted entirely to the Hessian Soldiers. The Lancaster County Historical Society has quite a few references, one being the HETRINA (Hessian Troups in North America). The six volumnes of the HETRINA were put together by a project in Marburg, Germany. There are also muster rolls showing location and dates of the Hessians during the war. I have an ancestor born in 1794. There were no clues to who his father was. Through the help of all the references listed above, my brickwall turned out to be a Hessian Soldier who stayed in Berks County. Good luck. 3. For a number of years my "brick wall" has been an ancestor named Heinrich NOHREHOLD (Nornhold). A family story passed down in another branch of the family came to my attention this week and I hope someone can help. According to the story passed down in that branch, the original NOHRENHOLD was a Hessian soldier who lived in Cornwall. Is there any type of list that might have Hessian soldiers who settled in Lebanon County? Has the historical society ever written any articles on this topic? Also what is the story of Cornwall? Can anyone tell me why a former soldier might have lived there? I know I am asking a lot of questions, but other than a marriage record at Tabor Church in 1806 the man has no earlier record that I have been able to locate. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks for any help you could provide. Rich

    1. [PALEBANO-L] Census look-up
    2. John Light
    3. Nancy - I am sorry, but I won't be able to help you with the census look-up offer. I do not have indices for the census. Census research has essentially two steps. You must first find an index for the census year and state you are researching at a genealogy library, online or CD and look up the names you are interested in or you believe might be the head of a household. If you have a Family History Library near you, this is a good place to start and a volunteer can show you how to do an index look-up; this is how I learned. Some public libraries will have their own state index. With the head of household name you will find the resident county and township (keep in mind I only have Lebanon Co. years 1850-80) AND the page number in that census record that contains the family group. With the information from the index you can then find the household on the original census page which will provide the names of family members and others living in household, their ages, state of birth and other information collected in that particular census year. If you are near a National Archives you will usually find both the index you need (if it exists) and the film of the census. Family Tree Maker Online has several articles on census research. Go To: http://www.familytreemaker.com/backissu.html Hope this gets you started. If you return to Monterey, we have excellent Family History Library branches and Sutro Genealogy Library and National Archives in San Francisco area. John Light

    3. My records are more complete on Stanton Edwin Shay's ancestors and desendants. I only have Luba Calice Shuey's parents, and her brothers and sisters. Parents as John Henry Shuey (born May 1837 in Lebanon County and died May 25, 1915) and no dates or parents for his wife Susan Daub - nothing further back on Shuey's. John Henry Shuey apparently had a sister Elizabeth, born September 26, 1835 - she married Henry G. Miller, who died November 5, 1896. They had three children Edwin M., Emma, and Lucinda. Edwin married a Katie B, Smith and they had three children - Warren S., R. Ray, and Paul E. Somewhere back in my memory I believe the Millers had a grocery store on North 9th Street, Lebanon - as I recall it was at the alley between Cumberland and Willow Streets. I think my father, Herbert, worked as a meat cutter there. My records of Stanton and Luba are quite complete through their son Herbert Wilbert Shay, who married Elsie Mabel Folmer - and their 6 children etc. (Including me). My records show that Luba had 10 brothers and sisters: a child which died in infancy, Stanley Garfield, Damon Herbel, Suvius Callista, Ada Lizzie, John Sumler, David Bradley, Clayton Holmes, Mary Montes and Bessie N. I have birthdates for all except the infant, death dates and who most of them married with some of the spouses birth and death dates and children. Many of these I remember visiting with my parents as I was growing up. Can send those for comparisons or to fill in what you may want and do not have. Would appreciate further info on William Fel(l)enbaum, glad for the info on his brothers and sisters. Filled in my files - could approximate their birthdates from the census dates. Thanks Hope this is of some help in your searches. So guess we're related --- distantly Earl -----Original Message----- From: Joan Wyatt [SMTP:mewyatt@uakron.edu] Sent: Monday, February 08, 1999 4:43 PM To: PALEBANO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [PALEBANO-L] LAH surname Thank you for the info on Rebecca Fellenbaum. 3. My great grandfather married (I have no date of the marriage) a Rebecca A. Fellenbaum. However all I know of her is her birthdate (May 22, 1840) and her death date (April 25, 1931) I used to visit her at 120 South Sixth Street, in Lebanon. She and her busband (James K. Shay - Born in Bismark, Lebanon County on August 4, 1835) - Died on March 21, 1913) had 10 Children about whom I have extensive information, including one son - Stanton Edwin Shay - my grandfather and his descendents, etc if any of that is of interest. He married Luba Calice Shuey. Is any of this of interest. I have absolutely no other information about Rebecca - no parents that know of, but, of course, she had some! And I have no other connections to her - would like some if you know of her. -----Original Message----- From: Joan Wyatt [SMTP:mewyatt@uakron.edu] Sent: Monday, February 08, 1999 3:10 AM To: PALEBANO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [PALEBANO-L] LAH surname Lisa, Do you have anything on a Mary Schaeffer that married Henry Fellenbaum?
