    1. [PALEBANO-L] Amos Lear
    2. I am looking for suggestions for further research on my "brick wall," Amos Lear. He was born in Dauphin County, 1872, Sep 11. (Stated place of birth on his marriage certificate) He married Clara Berry, from Annville on Mar 26, 1892. Their marriage certificate states he was a coachmaker, listed mother as: Sarah Lear, father dead, Guardian listed as John Fisher. Clara Berry is from the Berry family of Annville which is well-documented and easy to trace. They were married by Jonathan E Herester, Minister of Reformed Church, Palmyra. They lived in Lebanon for quite a while, finally moving to Annville. Late in life Amos joined the church of Clara's family, Christ Church in Annville, and they are both buried in Hill Cemetery, Annville. There is no obituary info in the Lebanon newspaper. Is there any type of Annville publication (newspaper) from this time-frame? Where did Amos come from? I have searched 1880 census, and all church records in Lebanon/Berks that I can obtain. I have posted to Dauphin County listing with no response. (Amos date of death - 1953, mar 26) It strikes me that the name "Amos" is not the typical German name of this time-frame, which makes me think that he could be Mennonite/Brethern. I have 2 days to go to courthouses, etc. for my search. I will start at Lebanon Courthouse, and move on from there. Looking for suggestions from those of you more experienced. Thanks!

    1. [PALEBANO-L] RE: Bill Cribb's Obit website & other stuff
    2. Mary (GLOD) Hervey
    3. While I was browsing his site I noticed there were no entries for Lebanon County in the PA section. I have been working on a website for my webspace on Rootsweb for "Lebanon Obituaries" and told him that it is a work in progress. As soon as I get a fairly sizeable database I will upload it to Rootsweb and link to his site. My plan is to gather and enter all the obits I find in local papers for this year and then start working backwards from newpaper archives at the Daily Local News or Library. The idea came to me when I was searching for my father's relatives and found an obit on a Connecticut site that listed obits. The year was 1990 when she died. Some of us aren't just looking for ancient relatives but for kin that our immediate family has lost touch with over the years. In this case, my father hadn't talked to his sisters or brother since 1936 and I'd never met them. They were always a mystery to me. Through the work of someone else on the web, I was able to locate and find information on one of his siblings. (My father died in 1979). I'm also waiting for the weather to break so that I can put Lebanon on the map with the Genweb Cemetery Project. I don't have any ancestors in this county, but I live here and it's my way of paying back all the kind folks who have done their leg work in the areas that my ancestors called home. Anyone interested in joining in on this project would be welcome. Mary Mary ~~~~~~~~~~~ mhervey@micronet.net Visit Mary's BorderWorld: http://members.xoom.com/mhervey

    1. Re: [PALEBANO-L] State Archives
    2. Linnea Miller
    3. State Archives in Harrisburg will hold *ALL* county deeds, wills and some other things until about 1850. After that year you must go to the individual counties to get information. Lebanon Co was established in 1813, so their deeds etc will only begin at about that year. I've found the Archives to be best for older research since everything is in one place. Also, around the time of the change, sometimes the deed etc could be found in either county. In Lebanon Co you will find deeds, etc at the County Courthouse as Shirley mentioned. Parking is generally good in Lebanon (free.) Parking in Harrisburg is "interesting". <G> I've found the parking garages easiest, since they are long-term. The State Library is also in the vicinity, and the Dauphin Co Courthouse is within about a 10-15 minute walk. -Linnea At 20:25 3/21/99, Shirley M.
