Before users really panic about this "thing" .. I think you should know that it only selects people using both MS Word 97 and 2000 and Outlook 97/98 .. NOT Outlook Express. For some reason it doesn't like the Express version (which I thankfully use). I almost NEVER open attachments unless someone emails me earlier telling me they have a gedcom to share .. those I open up in my genealogy program anyway.. I also delete any email that starts off with lines and lines of email addresses/html/and other junk preceding the actual message. I think it's only polite to clean up something before forwarding it.. I for one don't need to see the names of the hundred people who received it before me. Mary ~~~~~~~~~~~ genmail@micronet.net
Linnea, I get some of that X-rated and other junk too. They aren't addressed to my Prodigy address, but to something like internetuser@........... Yesterday I got a junk message addressed to (none) with the subject: Your requested info. It's beyond me to understand how anyone can reach me at an address different from the one I have with Prodigy or--worse yet--no address. Donna (That starts with a D:-), Don't Know about the "V" word. You will have to ask Rootsweb about that. Posts to other mailing lists did get through with it spelled out. The Melissa 'thing' is a macro 'thing' that works in conjunction with MS Word and MS Outlook. There are plenty of articles that explain how it works, so I won't. The main problem is that Melissa sends out lots of email from an infected computer, overloading mail servers. No other damage to infected computers is know at this time. A few months back Happy99.exe hit the net. It does the same thing as Melissa, but works with the Winsock.dll file. That means it only caused problems with people who have dialup (modem) connections. Melissa can also send email from computers connected to LANs. That is what makes her so bad. Since Melissa is a MS Word macro 'thing', the way you get it is to open MS Word documents that are infected. One fix is to get the MS fix which allows you to disable macros imbedded in the Word documents. All of the anti'thing' programs have an update to protect you. As for the junk mail, there isn't too much you can do. Outlook has some controls that allow you to screen junk mail and never see it. Some mail services sell their user lists and the email addresses of all who respond to email from users of the free services. Gotya there. There are easy ways to query domains for valid user addresses. Some ISPs don't allow this. My ISP doesn't, and I don't get all the junk mail at this address. AOL does allow a search of their valid users, mainly from the user profiles. On AOL I get all types of unwanted spam. The same info that I put on AOL to allow others with the same interests to contact me, also allows the spammers to get my address. None of the Lebanon County Courthouse records are online. Berks County is the first one I have seen to do that. There is a searchable index for marriages. I forget what other things might be included in the index. One huge room has the land records. All bound records with no automation. Bring someone strong, because some of the volumes are heavy. That is all I can remember right now. Thanks for the responses everybody. The Historical society seems to be very highly thought of by all, so I'll definitely be planning a trip there in the near future. Bob - those automated databases at the court house - do you know what records they cover? Also are they available from the web (Berks county courthouse has a great web site where you can search the indices for all their records). Are their Will & Estate records available and indexed? That would probably pinpoint a death date for me if he left a will. Todd
You may have already heard about this, but the e-mail wording of this particular computer "bug" sounds like it could be especially annoying to genealogists who may too easily trust documents sent along to them from distant cousins. It's called "Melissa." I cannot use the "V"-word or this message will not go through to you. Rootsweb does not allow attachments on any lists, in part as protection for subscribers from catching a computer "V". It also has filters so that hoax warnings won't bother list members. One of the reasons I love Rootsweb! Most warnings are hoaxes, so please do not share any with the list without letting me know what you want to send first. I can check them out to verify whether or not they are true and will share it if it is significant to researchers. This one is true, and, as I said, I think it's worth sharing. You can read about it at: http://www.zdnet.com/pcweek/stories/news/0,4153,2233030,00.html or http://www.cert.org/advisories/CA-99-04-Melissa-Macro-Virus.html For more information in case you receive, and unknowingly open, the file, you can go to: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/mailissa.html The most important message, of course, is to be careful about opening attachments even when you know the person who sent them. -Linnea Miller Listowner
Todd, After rereading you letter, I thought of some other things you might do. The census is out for 1910 and 1920. Have you tried these yet? The social security death indexes are also good for find a date of death. Some of these people might be remembered by some of your living relatives. That is the best place to start looking. There is a file cabinet at the Historical Society with names that others have researched. I am sure they will have you look there first. The Court House has some automated databases that can be searched. Not sure what the dates are for the material that they have. Todd, The people at the Historical Society are very good at helping locate what records would help you get the information you are looking for. There are business directories, but I don't know for what years. If you have an idea what church they might have attended, they will get those books for you. The more info you have when you go there, the more you will get. Don't forget the marriage and death dates. The birth and obit notices in the newspapers can be helpful. Greetings! I just found out that some of my ancestors located to Lebanon county around 1890-1900 or so. I was hoping someone might be able to give me pointers on strategies for searching Lebanon county records in order to find the date of death for my ancestor, so I can hopefully obtain an obituary & other such information. I'm from neighboring Berks county and I know that the Historical Society here has a large searchable database for cemetery and church records (funerals, baptisms etc.) which sometimes make it easy to find to find this kind of information. I was hoping someone savvy in the ways of Lebanon County might have some tips for me. The family I am interested in is this family (most particularly the father) as recorded in the 1900 census: ed 137, sheet 16, L94, Lebanon County, North Lebanon Township John H Moyer. b. oct 1854, age 45, married 22 years, laborer (brewery)- Owned Home Agnes J. b. Sept 1859, age 40, married 22 years, mother of 4, 4 surviving Thomas, b oct 1882, age 17, Heater (occ) Jennie N. b. aug 1884 Does anybody have any idea what brewery John might have worked at? I know these folks started out in Berks county as Thomas Calvin, Jennie, and another daughter, Mary were all baptized here. If anyone has any tie-ins to this family or can help me find more information, I would certainly appreciate it. Thank you. Todd Moyer

I have been following the comments on the Lebanon Twp. Tax Lists with great interest. I have a rather simple question, but as I don't have a map of this area at the time, it is an important one. Do the Lebanon Township Tax Lists covering 1785-1812 cover all of what is today Lebanon County or just a part of Lebanon County? I would like to research the area around Colebrook and need to know if these lists would cover that area. Thanks, Rich
