    1. [PALEBANO-L] Status of Lebanon Obituary Website
    2. Mary (GLOD) Hervey
    3. Just thought I'd let you all know the status of the Lebanon Obit project. I am now in the process of scanning in the 1998 listings and am up to the letter "F" .. we can all thank Shirley Brown (and the enlisted help of her mother) for being so thorough in her collection of this information. Almost all of the names have not only the regular obituary listing, but also the funeral notices as well. Where there are pictures, I've included those in the list of files to be included. I was also amazed and delighted to see that most names also have date of birth, parent names, and spouse maiden names. The parent names would give researchers a link into the 1800's for many of these listings since a lot of the deaths occurred for people in their 80's and 90's. I had a false start in the beginning when I tried scanning and using OCR. Despite the resolution, my program decided where and if I would insert a symbol, tilde, or just ignore the text all together and print plain gibberish. It would have taken twice as long to clean up and correct the work done after OCR so I just converted all the scanned "image" files to gif files for the web. I will create a surname search page for each alpha letter (which will include all surnames -- the deceased, their spouse, parents, and if time allows, survivors). By clicking on the surname, it will take you to the condensed version that name (Last, first, maiden). Clicking on an individual name will take you to the actual obit (gif file) that includes all the other names that were on the scanned page (easily readable) and any funeral info for that person as well as survivor, sibling, parents, groups belonged to, church affiliations, etc. The site itself will be on the Rootsweb server with a link to the Lebanon County Genweb Site. Thank you to all of the persons who volunteered to help. At this point, I'm trying to figure out how I can recruit your assistance. If you're using Excel for 95 or the Office 97 version, you may be able to take the names off of the gif files I have and insert them in a file for me. I have it set up for the second phase right now (Last name, First & Middle, Maiden, Date of Death). The first phase will be the easiest .. just sorting the Last name column and posting to the website for the search. If any of you are interested, I can email the gif files for a specific letter (the c's, d's, e's, etc.) ..it's usually about 10 files at 230k each (for those less familiar with file sizes.. you can fit 5 or 6 of these files on each 3 1/2" floppy disk... they are not very large files. Shirley has also graciously given me the 1995 obits and when the 1998 ones are finished, I'll tackle those next. I'm hoping to keep going to earlier and earlier years through the newspaper archives after these are finished. On a related note. As an English major, I've always been a reader and many of the "stories" behind these obits are fascinating and touching. I've read of husband's following their wives to the eternal beyond just month's after their spouse died.. in one case it was only 3 months... Other's have had such full lives and been active in their community .. touched SO MANY lives, experienced so much.. I have to wonder if they departed out of sheer exhaustion... In all, I think I've tried in most cases to learn about the people behind the names as I typed them. It's my sincere hope that someone out there finds the persons they seek and gets a chance to learn something about who they were. 3. Jeff Staines and Leroy Miller-------I asked showed the question about the strange enlistment period of the 11th Reg. P.V. to my husband. (He teached college courses in Civil war history ) and this is what he suggested. "Thanks to Dyer, <can get the full citation if you want.> I have an easy answer. This is the 11th Regiment Militia Infantry "Called September 4, 1862, to repel Lee's invasion of maryland. Disbanded September 24, 1862. In other words - this is not the 11th Penn Vol which was a 3 year unit, but just a state militia temporarily called into service. Hope this helps. Cathy Weigley caw756@nwu.edu * * * * * -- Also, on p. 647: "In the 11th Regt., P.V., organized Sep. 12, 1862, discharged Sep. 24, 1862, were: Co. A — Sam'l B. Light (likely Dr. Sam'l Bahl Light), Ezekial Light, Israel H. Light, Joseph Light, & in Co. B. was Peter H. Light." Twelve days seems like a rather short period of service, so perhaps there is an error in one of the dates.

    1. [PALEBANO-L] Lang/Fischer/Walmer
    2. Recently I have come across information on a Philip Fischer that married a Willimina Lang and had a son Jacob. I think at various times I have seen Lang information "traded" on the list. Do any of the persons having the Lang (does this become Long?) name in their line also have Fischer information? Jacob Fischer (5 Nov. 1766/7 April 1850) married to Sabina last name unknown (1April 1778/6 Sept. 1851), was the son of Philip and Willimina Lang. This Jacob Fischer, I believe, had children that married into the Walmer line three times or more. Other names included with this Lang information were Urban Lang, Christian Lang, Catharina Blum and Ludwig Blum. This was in a family file folder at the Lebanon Historical Society. Thanks. Beverly Walmer Wyld

Don't expect to catch any lunkers, though. :-) There is a Swatara township in the northern part of Lebanon County. The Swatara creek runs along the western border of Swatara Township and then runs along the northern border of North Annville Township. There are on-line maps that will show the exact location of both the township and the creek, which eventually flows into Dauphin County and into the Susquehanna river. I do not know the exact length of the Swatara creek, but it enters Lebanon County from Schuylkill County and flows across the northern part of Lebanon County. Did you know that there is a small church called Brightbill's Meeting House(formerly U.C.C.) along Rt. 322 near Campbelltown in Lebanon Co.? Going west from Rt. 72 toward Hershey, it is on the right side of the road, immediately before Horning's Furniture store. The cemetery is small, surrounded by a gray stone wall, and easy to miss. I had driven past it, and nothing but a gut instinct told me to go back and look. I found three Fasnacht tombstones, which I have not yet placed within my Lebanon County Fasnachts. I had no expectations or prior knowledge to look there. Isn't that eerie? I'm teling you this because I think I have seen the names Brechbill and Brightbill linked in several places. Maybe you can find some of your family there, since the name was obviously linked to the church. Good luck! Bruce Fosnocht

    1. [PALEBANO-L] First name Dorst?? and Swatara??
    2. I found the given name DORST listed in the baptismal records of Rev. John Caspar Stoever. And after the name was the word Swatara in parentheses. Ex: BRECKBIEL, DORST (Swatara) Breckbiel, Johannes, b 09 21 1741; bap 01 01 1742, Spon. Frederick Kuehner & his wife Can anyone tell me if Dorst is a common nickname or given name? If is is a nickname then for what given name is it used? And what is (Swatara) referring to? A location? Thanks for your help! Leigh Ann
