    1. Re: [PALEBANO-L] Guardianship of Minors
    2. Janice A. Frank
    3. Linnea et al - I just recently got an example which may suggest the reasons for some other cases: 1845, Berks County. Catherine Frank petitions saying that her husband Daniel left her a widow with seven children, and would the court appoint guardians for the four who are minors under 14. Two who are minors over 14 (the oldest one I assume was no longer a minor) signed their own petitions, same date. The same man, who was not a relative as far as I know (though I have not really looked into it) was appointed guardian for all six of them. Now I know that at this point their father had been dead at least three years and maybe more. But I happen to know they had been collectively left part of a large and complicated estate in Lancaster Co, and I suspect that the reason they needed a guardian now was to look after their interests in that matter. I suspect he was a lawyer or at least someone who would know more about such matters than their mother would. It is my understanding that the mother could be guardian of minors unless/until she remarried, in which case one was appointed, but if she needed or wanted help she could ask for it. Most children did have guardians appointed when their father died, even though the mother was still living. I must ask was this just the convention of the time or was it a law? Thanks. -Linnea

    3. Thanks, Donna Thomas! Sure sounds like your Barbara DESCH is the mother of my husband's great-?-aunt Magdalena RUDY b 6 Feb 1800 who married Michael Stroh 30 Apr 1822, son of Johann Michael Stroh and Appolonia ? of Fredericksburg PA. I do have Magdalena & Michael's children, if you would like that information. Would you mind giving me the will book citation or number for Barbara's will - I'm assuming it is in Dauphin Co. Also, were these baptisms recorded in Zion Evan Luth Church in Fredericksburg? Thanks so much! -Linnea Miller At 22:21 4/27/99, Dmt1951@aol.com wrote: >Hi Helen and Donna, > >Just to throw another fly into the ointment...I have a Barbara Desch (Desh) >married to a Jacob Rudy in Fredericksburg, Lebanon Co. 2. Helen Maiman
    3. Jacob Rudy is my GGGgrandfather. He was born circa 1802. This would make this Jacob Rudy 18 at the time he was selected as gardian. Could this be? Could it be that Jacob's father was also a Jacob and an innkeeper? I do not know a great deal about him but I do know he was married to Barbara (last name unknown to me). They had 4 daughters, Amanda, Caroline, Angeline and Sarah. Caroline (Karolina) was born 2/12/1833 and baptised at Jonestown Lutheran. She married Elias Mader. The 1850 census lists Jacob's occupation as innkeeper and his age as 48. I also know that Jacob was listed in the 1870 census of Lebanon as living in a hotel and his occupation was retired innkeeper. The fact that RUDY is a fairly common name has made it difficult for me to figure out his parentage. Helen

    3. I am looking for any info on the RUPP family of Lebanon. A good majority are buried in Moonshine. This is as far back as I have. Peter RUPP 1829-1889 md. Sarah NYE 1834-1891 They had the following children Elmira, John (1865-1881) Sara jane (died 1878) Mary, William(born 1873) and Jacob( 1876-1961. I believe Peters father was a jacob RUPP 1804-1861 and Peter had a sister Susanna. Jacobs wife in 1850 was a mary-----there is a large age gap between Sussanna and Peter---in 1850 Susana was 9 and Peter 21. William married Maggie KREISER b Nov. 1874-1943 they had at least 1 daughter Stella 1896-1923 md. Charles NEIDIG son of Henry and Kate YIENGST. They also had a son Grant P. 1903-1950 md. Annie SCHELL Their son Harry married Carrie WESTHAFER daughter of John WESTHAFER and Mary Ann KREISER. I also have a Maggie Ney (Nye?) 1873-1930 married Jacob DEAVEN in 1890 son of George DEAVEN III and Susanna RUPP. Lydia KREISER married Jacob DEAVENS in 1962 he was the son of George DEAVEN Jr.and Lydia RUPP Lydia was 1836-1906. Anyway if you could shake your Lebanon family trees and see if any RUPP's fall out of it I'd appreciate it. Thanks and have a great day---------------------nancy

    3. Hi Donna! .... *Possibly* I have a very little bit on Jacob RUDY (I'm still working on compiling these records, so I'm not even sure if I have their children in my files): ---------- 1 Magdalena STROH. Born on 15 June 1792 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.(1) Magdalena died in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania on 16 February 1878; she was 85.(2) Records of her death stated that she was the mother of seven children, grandmother of 36 grandchildren and great-grandmother of 30 great-grandchildren. On 20 February 1814 when Magdalena was 21, she married Jacob RUDY, in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania.(3) 2 Johann Michael STROH. Born on 17 April 1763 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.(4) Johann Michael was baptized on 8 May 1763.(5) Johann Michael died in Stumpstown (now Fredericksburg), Lebanon County, Pennsylvania on 6 March 1821; he was 57.(6) Buried on 7 March 1821 in St. John's Churchyard, Fredericksburg, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania.(7) Johann Michael Firnssler and wife, Catharina, were named as sponsors at his baptism. He served in 3rd Company, 6th Battalion, Lancaster County Militia during the American Revolution. On 3 June 1786 when Johann Michael was 23, he married Appolonia (--?--), in Dauphin (now Lebanon) County, Pennsylvania.(7) Sources 1. Born on 7 March 1794 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Michael married Magdalena Rudy. -------------------- If memory serves me, I believe this STROH family ended up with some type of "public house" in Fredericksburg. I'll have to look through my files further. -Linnea At 20:32 4/26/99, der@redrose.net wrote: >I recently discovered that my Hermanus RISTENBATT, born 1805, was choosing >a guardian in Nov. 1820 because *his* father, also named Hermanus >RISTENBATT, had died by then.
