    1. Re: [PALEBANO-L] 1909/typhoid
    2. By an interesting coincidence, today there was this story in a chat column of our local community newspaper (Siesta Key Florida PELICAN). Headline: Taking a swing at Typhoid "In the early 1900s typhoid epidemics were rampant and a Kansas doctor was convinced that flies were the source. It was while he was at a baseball game that he fielded the idea for an advertising campaign to publicize his attempts to combat flies. Fans began shouting 'Sacrifice fly, sacrifice fly'. Followed by "Swat that fly". There was his campaign slogan: 'Swat that fly'. It caught on and a Boy Scout leader followed up with a civic campaign for his troop,. They used screening and some yardsticks to create 'fly bats'. When brought to the attention of the good doctor he declared an even better name would be the 'fly swatter'". And this funny from the same column (Pardon the violation of the no humor rules ... The device which copies text from the paper didn't know where to stop. "Middle age is when you've met so many people that every new person you meet reminds you of someone else." Ogden Nash Dick Creps

    2. I had half a dozen deaths from typhoid in one Dauphin County family in 1905 and 1907. Perhaps the epidemic was still recycling. Anne

    3. I would love to make contact with anyone working on this line of Klines. I am a descendant of Peter Kline. Connie cstyree@juno.com BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA DAUPHIN COUNTY pg 582 KLINE, DANIEL, senior member of the firm of Kline & Himes was born in Berks county, Pa., June 21, 1839; son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Keen) Kline. The parents were both natives of Berks county, where they resided until about 1852, when they removed to Lebanon county and there spent the remainder of their lives. The father was a farmer and later in life kept a hotel. Their living children are: Catherine, Reuben, Joseph, Edward, Elizabeth, widow of William Martz of Steelton, John and David. Their deceased children are: Rebecca, Peter and Mary O., all lived to maturity. Daniel, when quite young removed to Lebanon county and located near Jonestown where he received his education in the public schools, his school days being terminated when he was fourteen years of age by the death of his parents, which made it necessary for him to start out in life for himself. He began an apprenticeship at the tinsmith trade in Uniontown, Dauphin county, which was completed in Northumberland county, his employer having removed his business to that county and where he continued to work at his trade as a journeyman until 1861. He then removed to Harrisburg where he followed his occupation as a journeyman tinsmith for twenty years. In 1881 he formed partnership with William G. Zollinger under the firm name of Zollinger & Kline and engaged in business. Subsequently the firm was succeeded by a joint stock company called the Harrisburg Stove and Steam Heating Company of which Mr. Zollinger was the treasurer and Mr. Kline was the general manager and which continued the business for five years. At the end of this time Mr. Kline and Mr. Himes formed a partnership and purchased the business or J. D. Rowe and since 1892 have successfully conducted the enterprise. In his political views Mr. Kline is a staunch Republican. He attends the Methodist Episcopal church.

    3. Hi. To all you people talking about KOHR - since there seem to be several of you I am sending this to the list, and I wouldn't do this if he weren't already a public figure of sorts anyway: One of the news anchors of WTVD, the ABC TV station in Durham NC, is Kohr Harlan. He's probably in his 30s. I've always thought this is an unusual given name and it may indicate that is his mother was a KOHR and he is a cousin of some of yours. That is absolutely all I know, I have no connection myself. Jan
