    1. [PALEBANO-L] Epitaphs
    2. Mary
    3. Thought some of you might enjoy these. There's also a mention of an epitaph from Uniontown, PA for you Fayette Listers. It reminds you of how creative people were back then when coming up with a suitable (or humorous) parting statement about the deceased.. Enjoy! ========= Actual epitaphs from gravestones ... On the grave of Ezekial Aikle in East Dalhousie Cemetery, Nova Scotia: Here lies Ezekial Aikle Age 102 The Good Die Young. In a London, England cemetery: Ann Mann Here lies Ann Mann, Who lived an old maid But died an old Mann. Dec. 8, 1767 In a Ribbesford, England, cemetery: (Note: I loved this one <grin>) Anna Wallace The children of Israel wanted bread And the Lord sent them manna, Old clerk Wallace wanted a wife, And the Devil sent him Anna. Playing with names in a Ruidoso, New Mexico, cemetery: Here lies Johnny Yeast Pardon me For not rising. Memory of an accident in a Uniontown, Pennsylvania cemetery: Here lies the body of Jonathan Blake Stepped on the gas Instead of the brake. In a Silver City, Nevada, cemetery: Here lays Butch, We planted him raw. He was quick on the trigger, But slow on the draw. A widow wrote this epitaph in a Vermont cemetery: Sacred to the memory of my husband John Barnes who died January 3, 1803 His comely young widow, aged 23, has many qualifications of a good wife, and yearns to be comforted. (ed: guess they did not have personnal ads then) A lawyer's epitaph in England: Sir John Strange Here lies an honest lawyer, And that is Strange. Someone determined to be anonymous in Stowe, Vermont: I was somebody. Who, is no business Of yours. Lester Moore was a Wells, Fargo Co. station agent for Naco, Arizona in the cowboy days of the 1880's. He's buried in the Boot Hill Cemetry in Tombtone, Arizona: Here lies Lester Moore Four slugs from a .44 No Les No More. In a Georgia cemetery: "I told you I was sick!" John Penny's epitaph in the Wimborne, England, cemetery: Reader if cash thou art In want of any Dig 4 feet deep And thou wilt find a Penny. On Margaret Daniels grave at Hollywood Cemetery Richmond, Virginia: She always said her feet were killing her but nobody believed her. In a cemetery in Hartscombe, England: On the 22nd of June - Jonathan Fiddle - Went out of tune. Anna Hopewell's grave in Enosburg Falls, Vermont has an epitaph that sounds like something from a Three Stooges movie: Here lies the body of our Anna Done to death by a banana It wasn't the fruit that laid her low But the skin of the thing that made her go. More fun with names with Owen Moore in Battersea, London, England: Gone away Owin' more Than he could pay. Someone in Winslow, Maine didn't like Mr. Wood: In Memory of Beza Wood Departed this life Nov. 2, 1837 Aged 45 yrs. Here lies one Wood Enclosed in wood One Wood Within another. The outer wood Is very good: We cannot praise The other. On a grave from the 1880's in Nantucket, Massachusetts: Under the sod and under the trees Lies the body of Jonathan Pease. He is not here, there's only the pod: Pease shelled out and went to God. The grave of Ellen Shannon in Girard, Pennsylvania is almost a consumer tip: Who was fatally burned March 21, 1870 by the explosion of a lamp filled with "R.E. Danforth's Non-Explosive Burning Fluid" Oops! Harry Edsel Smith of Albany, New York: Born 1903--Died 1942 Looked up the elevator shaft to see if the car was on the way down. It was. In a Thurmont, Maryland, cemetery: Here lies an Atheist All dressed up And no place to go. In a cemetary in England: Remember man, as you walk by, As you are now, so once was I, As I am now, so shal you be, Remember this and follow me. To which someone replied by writing on the tombstome: To follow you I'll not consent, Until I know which way you went. ===== Note: My mother selected this last one for the tombstone of my niece. She was 8 yrs. old when she died in 1976. The last line was a little different (something like "take up the cross and follow me"). She also used a familiar quote from "Crossing the Bar" for my father's stone. But then she's an old fashioned Southerner and parting words on a stone were a big thing for them. 1. [PALEBANO-L] Any info on family of Mildred Isabelle Shoop
    2. Mary
    3. We found a framed High School Diploma and I'm trying to find the family it belongs to. It is a large 12"x16" document in a frame. Information on the High School diploma: Harrisburg Public Schools William Penn High School This certifies that Mildred Isabelle Shoop having completed the ....... and so on.... graduated.. 28th day of January, 1937 I'm assuming that Shoop is her maiden name and I'm hoping that someone out there knows this family. I'd like to get this document out to them. It is in incredibly great shape and nicely framed. It was found inside a piano that was bought used ten years ago, just moved it from it's original spot in our house yesterday. How it got in there is beyond me. 3. My roommate finally decided to sell the piano that's been sitting in her dining room for the last ten years (none of us play it), and she was holding the hunk of furniture for someone who needed a parking spot for it "temporarily." This other person bought it via the Lebanon Merchandiser and it's been sitting here ever since. Anyway, when we moved it away from the wall, a framed diploma fell to the floor in the back of the piano. It is a large 12"x16" document in a frame. Information on the High School diploma: Harrisburg Public Schools William Penn High School This certifies that Mildred Isabelle Shoop having completed the ....... and so on.... 28th day of January, 1937 I'm wondering if anyone knows who this belongs to, or if there are decendants of Mildred Isabelle Shoop who would like to claim this diploma. 3. Hi Donna, Here's an interesting find. GIF images of all the Stark Co. 1850 census records. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/oh/stark/census/1850/ If you know the township, the page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohstark/census.htm lists the range of pages for each township. Also the Stark Co., OH Rootsweb page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohstark/ has lots of great information on research sources. 2. Gerhart, Paul
    3. Sherry, This is Hochdeutsch (High German), not Pennsylvania Dutch. I suppose all pastors were expected to speak that way or at least write that way. wurden or nurden or murden getraut den 20 October 1855 wurden getraut den 20 October 1855 were married the 20th of October (strange that October is in English. It is Oktober auf Deutsch) This is a form that exceeds my two years of Geman study - I think it is future perfect and literally means "will have been married". I would have said "war getraut" - but then again I am no pro at translation or proper German. You can safely say "were married". Paul Prof. Paul F. 2. Thanks to all who responded, especially Michael, this is exactly what I was looking for!!!! Sherry ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ In a message dated 5/22/99 2:41:22 PM Central Daylight Time, mbshafer@telerama.lm.com writes: << Hi Sherry, Diggin way back about 30 years to my high school German I would say it means: Frank STAHLE and Louise CHRIST were properly married October 20, 1855 by minister William A. Good in Reading, Berks Co. in Pennsylvania in North America. The German verb "trauen" means to marry and in German the "ge" prefix and "t" ending (getraut) make it past tense as in the English "married." The word you have in question is most likely wurden (umlauted u). Wurde (umauted U) literally means "dignity" thus the phrase "wurden getraut" meaning married with dignity or in English phrasing "properly married." As I mentioned its been a while but this should be at least very close to the actual meaning. Best Regards, Michael Shafer Schäffer Wood Works >>
