I would also be interested in the canal information. Quite a few of my ancestors were canalmen. At 10:51 PM 09/15/1999 -0400, you wrote: > > > > Thanks very much for the info, Shari. Hi: Union Deposit is in Dauphin Co., Hanover Twp. Check on net for a Dauphin Co Genealogy Society or directly to the Dauphin Co. county seat - better yet check your nearest LDS Family history center (library) - unbelievable depository of info usually for any state. Good Luck. Info came from book entitled "PA Line". Shows all counties, towns with populations, rivers, townships, etc. Wonderful book for resources. Sunny Seidel (originally from PA) Sonora, CA

Augnst about the canals of Lebanon Co. In Vol XIV No 1 of 1966 (copyright 1968), "The Two Canals of Lebanon County" he lists the following "new" sources: documents of the Union Canal in the possession of the Historical Society of Berks County, the LEHMAN diaries in the possession of our own Society (Lebanon Co Hist Soc), and two books on canal surveys in the possession of Mr. Arthur Feeman a member of our Society." The older sources include "Reverand J.G. Francis' paper on the Union Canal and Judge George B. Haas' 'History of Pine Grove'". Mr. Aungst's other publication, "The Union Canal and the Lehmans, 1828-1885" is Vol XVI No 4, copyright 1985, and mentions sources as the William Lehman diaries, the Benjamin Bringhurst Lehman diaries, history notes and sketches from the official annual reports of the Union Canal Company of Pennsylvania. Some of this information was found at the Lebanon County Historical Society as well as the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (the Lehman diaries and unpublished history notes and sketches of the George M. Lehman Collection and annual reports of the Canal Company.) -Linnea

The family lore is that Samuel Blauch was a carpenter on the Union Canal, but I have not been able to document that fact. I am familiar with the name Jacob Renkenberger, but I was not aware he was from Ohio. Did Jacob moved to Pennsylvania for the purpose of working on the canal? If so, that is very interesting. Unfortunately, I have relatively little information regarding Samuel or his life. He did own property in Waterworks adjoining the raceway for the dam. Dave David N. Dave, Jacob's birthplace and occupation are from his Civil War records. I also have a photo of him in his uniform. I think that he did, indeed come to this area to work on the canal because of the circumstantial info I have related. Jacob also applied for a CW pension, which coroborates much of what I had before that. He ended up dying in the Soldier's & Sailors Home in Erie. Judy
Dave, Who was your ancestor? I have a Blauch ancestor who m a ships carpenter on the canal also. This man, Jacob Renkenberger, was b in Columbiana Co., OH. I remember reading in some of my OH research of a call for workers there for the canal. Jacob married Sarah Blauch d/o Samuel who lived in Waterworks, Leb Co, also connected with the Canal (for you non-natives). I believe you are correct re: the name of Union Deposit relating to the Union Canal. The Union Canal House, a present-day tavern is located in Union Deposit - the actual town. Egle, in his Hist of Dau & Leb Co. says " Union Deposit was laid out by Philip Wolfersberger 7/30/1845, and called Unionville. . . The place, however, always went by the name of Union Deposit, from the fact of its being a deposit of all the grain produce, etc., of this region, preparatory to its shipment on the canal by Mr. Wolfersberger, who owned sevral boats." Mark, Union Deposit is in Dauphin county,Pa. It is just off Route 39 just outside Hershey, Pa. Hope this helps. Joyce

I have been reading the messages about this town with some interest, because we used to pass through it frequently for a couple of years while I was a boy. I also am sure that I read somewhere that it acquired this name because it was a storage place, or deposit, for arms for the Union Army during the Civil War. Leroy Miller

I wonder if the name of the town derives from its connection with the canal. If someone on the list has more information on this, I would be interested in learning more about the town. (I had some ancestors who owned land in the area.) On the subject of the Union Canal, is there a good source of information about the operation of the canal, the employees, employment records, etc.? I have a different ancestor who supposedly worked as a carpenter for the Union Canal. (Perhaps he built locks?) Are there records that I might examine? If so, where? Dave David N. Shari et al - I think Union Deposit may have been a bit more of a place in the 19th century - it was enough of a place to have two doctors. I know because they were relatives of mine, David C. KELLER 1814-1891 and Henry D. KELLER 1825-1887. They were brothers and they are buried there, in the Union Deposit cemetery, along with some of my other KELLERs. Does anyone know why Union Deposit was called that? Jan ShariL100@aol.com wrote: > > There seems to be a little confusion about Union Depost, PA. "History of Dauphin and Lebanon Couties" - William Egle, 1883 (reprint) page 428 "Union Deposit was laid out by Philip Wolfersberger, July 30, 1845, and called Unionville. Many stones broken and overturned. Beverly Walmer Wyld
much welcome:):)
Thanks very much for the info, Shari. Seems like a strange name for a town! Kirk There seems to be a little confusion about Union Depost, PA. There is a very small town near Hummelstown and Hershey, called Union Deposit. It does not have a post office of its own, but instead uses the Hershey post office. This is most likely the Union Deposit, PA you are looking for. It is in Dauphin County, but not too far from the Lebanon County line. The Union Deposit area just outside of Harrisburg, PA is the area which surrounds The Point Mall (previously known as The Union Deposit Mall). The Point Mall sits on Union Deposit Rd., which stretches from Union Deposit to Harrisburg. This is also where you will find the Union Deposit exit of Interstate 83. The mall and the exit were named for the road. They are miles from the town. Not including the residents, very few people have any idea there is a town named Union Deposit. If you ask for directions to Union Deposit, you will most certainly end up near the mall.
Thanks, Cricket Kirk
