1. [PALEBANO] FYI: Allentown PA Obits On-Line
2. Linnea Miller
3. Thought some of you might be interested if your reserch is in this area. The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 1999 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. - -------------------------------------- - Online Obituaries From Allentown, PA Candy Jens sent an e-mail this week asking me to write about one of her favorite online sites. When I read her message, I realized that she had just described it better than I ever could. With Candy's permission, here is her e-mail: Dear Mr. Eastman: I'd like to give some favorable publicity to The Morning Call, the newspaper covering Allentown, PA and surrounding counties. Their obituaries are a genealogist's dream, and they are available on-line (mcall.com) from 1987 on. Not every obit has all the info below, but most do. They list a name, nickname, age, date of death, and place of death. The spouse(s) names are given, with the maiden name in parentheses, and if living or "late." Often the marriage date is approximated by "They were married 46 years in July," for example. Occupation(s), military record, and organization and church memberships are given. The decedent's place of birth and parents' names (with mother's maiden name) are listed. Brothers' and sons' names and locations are given; for sisters and daughters, their spouse's name is also included. Since many families emigrated en masse from small towns in Austria-Hungary and settled in the area rather than dispersing, many generations of the same family are easy to trace - with the help of the most complete obits I've seen! Candy Jens Tamaqua, PA candyj@ptdprolog.net The Morning Call is available at: http://www.mcall.com

1. [PALEBANO] FYI: Calif Land Patents On-Line
2. Linnea Miller
3. Thought some of you might be interested if your research is in this area: The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 1999 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. - California Land Patent Information Is Now Online The following is an announcement from the Bureau of Land Management: Historic California Land Patent Information has been published on the Internet by the Bureau of Land Management. This information is a valuable resource to the genealogist, historian or as a starting point for land title searches. The web site lists over 260,000 individual land patent recipients in the state of California. The data is organized geographically by county. Using Adobe's Acrobat plug-in with your browser, you can search county .pdf files to find individuals, and determine date, location, and under which law the land was obtained from the government. Also, compressed spreadsheets can be downloaded and manipulated using Microsoft Excel. The data are not "Official Government Records" but are a useful research tool. Instructions for obtaining Official Records from the Bureau of Land Management and the National Archives are provided. Besides the value to the genealogist, when combined with Master Title Plats available from BLM, information can be extracted to make maps showing periods of settlement, location of railroad grants, homesteads, mineral lands, and Mexican Land Grants, to name just a few possibilities. A page using Bakersfield, California as a case study, provides some examples of additional uses of this data. This site contains high quality primary records that are valuable to genealogists. The site includes a name index for every patentee in the State of California. Once you find the individual, you note the county where the land is located and then select the link to that county. All of the county information is in Adobe Acrobat format. This website is available at: http://www.ca.blm.gov/landpatents/

1. [PALEBANO] RE: ELLENBERGER/KELLER/GINGRICH
2. I am searching for ancestors of Lydia Ellenberger, (Aug 5, 1833-Jan 13, 1896), wife of John Jacob Keller. They lived in North Annville Township, Lebanon County, Pa., and are buried in the Hill Lutheran cemetery in North Annville Township. In the 1850 census, Lydia age 16, was living with Christian, age 49, and Catherine Gingrich, age 48, in North Annville Township. Catherine could be an older sister or an aunt. Probably, Nicholas Ellenberger, the immigrant, is her great grandfather. Nicholas, born in 1698 in the Pfalz, came to America on the ship "Robert and Alice" in 1739. He was taxed in Lebanon Twp, Lancaster County, (later becoming Lebanon Co.), in 1750 and 1756. Nicholas' children included two sons, John and Jacob, both who were taxed in Lebanon Twp., and both died in Annville. My records show that John only has daughters and no sons. Jacob is believed to have had five sons including Jacob, (1763-1830), living in Annville Twp. in 1810; Samuel, married to Christine Kline, living in Annville Twp. in 1810; Christian, living in Lebanon Twp. in 1783; John who went to Centre County; and Henry (1777-1838), married to Anna Kreider, and living in Annville Twp. in 1810. Can anyone provide any information on Lydia's parents or siblings. Thank you. William Matz Domatz Webpage

1. [PALEBANO] Alderfer and Freedeck
2. Blair
3. Has anyone run across the names FREDECK or ALDERFER in their research? The name FREDECK appeared in the Leacock/Upper Leacock area of Lancaster County in the 1850's and the ALDERFER name appeared in the 1850's in the New Holland area of Earl Township. There are Alderfers buried at St. Stephen's Cemetery in New Holland, Lancaster County. Members of these families married daughters of the Blair family I am researching. Betty

2. Gerhart, Paul
3. In response to John Light's request regarding the location of the "Groh Farm" near Halfway: I checked my copy of the 1875 Atlas of Lebanon County, page 34, Jackson Twp. and found: 1. the farm of "L. Groh" on the north side of the Prescott - Myerstown Road at the very edge of Jackson Twp near the South Lebanon Twp. Line - 1 to 2 miles east of Prescott. The road parallels (more or less) the railroad line about a quarter mile south of it. The Groh farm lies between the railroad and the road about a mile southwest of the Tulpehocken Manor. 2. There is also a house labeled "C. Groh" on the north side of the main road from Lebanon into Myerstown at the eastern edge of West Myerstown. It must be about where the present day 422 by-pass around the north side of Myerstown takes off to the left. John, If you will send me your snail mail address, and assure me you will not use it for a profit making activity, I will send you a photocopy of the vicinity. Paul Prof. Paul F. To those of you who actually lived there -- do you recall any of the farms/farm houses known as the old "Groh Farm"? I found it interesting that two of you remarked on Halfway's close (walking distance) proximity to Tulpehocken Manor/Plantation. My grandmother born there married my grandfather born at the "Groh" farm and that's the property I am seeking to identify.
